  4. hey Edgy... i didn't know you were from Spain!
  5. ="Edgy DC"] But the highest leverage inning is not the first inning. i know, but still. can't the team at least acknowledge that its a better strategy to put heilman in the rotation and either (1) either find an adequate middle inning guy, or (2) spread the extra innings out of the rest of the pen, than it is to keep turning games pitched by Lima/etc, over to the bullpen (including heilman) in the 4th or 5th inning, by which time we're already down by 5. we can keep aaron in the pen for those "high leverage" innings in the 6th and 7th, but 2 games out of 5 we don't have any high leverage innings for him to pitch.

  7. His girlish giggle, and jock-ish bluster, and irritating voice, and self-centered approach to broadcasting (and the universe in general) make me very uninterested in his appearance, but thanks for the heads up. Now i can avoid the FAN even more than i usually do. Yes, he knows a great deal about pitching, and once in a while deems it acceptable to communicate some of it... and yes, he's the all-time greatest Met, yada yada yada blah blah blah. But i just can't stand him. i know its heresy. Bret can throw a blanket for me on his couch, i'm sure, if my ostracism is necessary for espousing such a view. but there it is. i said it. I think of him in terms of high school... he always struck me as that bullying jock who pushed nerds into their lockers; the kind of clean-cut, nice bright lad who bought his term papers; like the class president who secretly date-raped the prom queen and she was too ashamed to report it .... well, you get the picture. I'm sure Mr. Seaver is a perfectly nice guy (actually i'm not sure of that at all), but I've hated him my entire life, and it irritates me that he's still the only real "HOF Met", with his number on the wall. This is why i root so hard for David Wright. If everything breaks right, he could one day supplant Tom Terrific as the face of the franchise, making my fandom a little easier.
  8. WP makes sense. and don't talk to me about Heilman's "high leverage" innings. The highest "leverage" inning is the FIRST inning... i'm pretty sure that teams that take an early lead win a preponderance of those games. Letting Lima/Gonzalez/Lohse/Mays/etc consistenly put us in a 5-run hole by the 3rd inning really makes Heilman's "high leverage" 7th innings alot less meaningful. and its not like we aren't going to have to use those crapsters in the 5TH SLOT in the rotation anyway, joining Maine, Bannister, Oliver and whoever in that mix. But turning over both the 4th and 5th SPer slots, behind a mediocrity like Trax in the 3rd slot, is a recipe for disaster and it MUST STOP RIGHT FUCKING NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
  9. this is just so so stupid. Zambrano is out for the season. We're not looking for a short-term fix... we need to replace a #4 starter, who'll get 180-200 IP over the course of a season. And we'd rather keep Heilman to 60 IP for the year, while giving the additional 120 IP to Lima? or Lohse? or Gonzalez? or retread x,y, or z? or AA guys? i feel like i'm in the Twilight Zone... everybody is speaking in tongues. PUT HEILMAN IN THE FUCKING ROTATION GODDAMN IT! you can replace his 7th inning role more readily than finding a solid SPer. Julio has pitched better, and Heath Bell still has potential, and there are other candidates to whom you can give the ocasional 6th and 7th innings. But if we can't get into the 6th inning with a lead, isn't a great middle-inning/setup guy of less value? Its a luxury the Mets don't have right now. I was never a big Heilman fan, but its not like he wasn't a dominant SPer in college, and a good one in the minors, and while he bombed early in that role on the Mets, he's shown alot the last 2 seasons. this is even worse than batting Wright 6th-7th last season, reducing his ABs, or 5th (rather than 2nd or 3rd) this season. this is giving around 120 IP to guys like Lima, Gonzalez, etal, instead of Heilman, because your so concerned about giving Heilman's next 40 IP to Julio or Bell. STOP THE MADNESS!!!
  10. there not so much "seminal" as "semenal"... i've seen DT and its pretty stupid and boring. I'd wager they're all pretty stupid and boring, but i've heard "green door" with ivory soap girl Marilyn Chambers is the most intense. as far as "classic porn" goes, i prefer DEVIL IN MISS JONES. and there is a Sci Fi / Porn / cult film called CAFE FLESH which is kind of interesting. the filmmakers intended to make a low-budget SF film, but when they got mob guys to "co-produce" it, they had to rewrite it as a porn film. But there are still some more interesting ideas in it than your standard porno.
  11. hey Chuck, at one point, we had a lengthy discussion about graphic novels. if that thread can be found, you might find it interesting.

  14. soupy thinks he's so smart... an actor from the 70s who only did 5 films, but all were at least nominated for awards? well, that means he was probably a good actor who died young or suddenly quit acting. but its probably not a star, like James Dean in the 50s, because i would easily recall a star that died young (or old, like Richard Farnsworth, with a short career). so its probably a character actor who died young or quit. When thinking about Oscar-winning films of the 70s, the first movies that jump to mind are movies with Pacino, Hoffman, DeNiro, Nicholson. .. so I think about there movies and the GODFATHER movies come to mind first... and low and behold, therein lives brother Fredo, played by the dead character actor John Cazale. I checked on IMDB and see that Cazale is, indeed, the correct answer. DING DING DING! we have a winna!

  17. i found it really compelling. It reminded me of Eastwood's UNFORGIVEN. I like stories that underscore no only our inherent ferocity as a species, but our potential for redemption. Cronenberg is one of my faves, and i think this is one of his more interesting films.
  18. i've got "good movie" lists all over this forum, ya yutz!by genre, by director, by star... i've even got a top 100 somewhere!don't go relying on strangers... it makes me feel betrayed, somehow.

  20. On first blush, i'd take Philly. After thinking about it, i'd break it down this way: C Leiberthal for McCann - McCann (AT) 1B Howard for LaRoche - Howard (PH) 2B Utley for Giles - Utley (PH) SS Rollins for Renteria - even 3B Bell for Chipper - Chipper (AT) LF Burrell for Langerhans - Burrell (PH) CF Rowland for A. Jones - Jones (AT) RF Abreu for Francoeur - Abreu (PH) A slight edge to Philly, 4-3-1 If I weight the selections: C Leiberthal for McCann - McCann 10 / Leiberthal 8 1B Howard for LaRoche - Howard 10 / LaRoche 7 2B Utley for Giles - Utley 10 / Giles 8 SS Rollins for Renteria - Rollins 10 / Renteria 10 3B Bell for Chipper - Chipper 10 / Bell 6 LF Burrell for Langerhans - Burrell 10 / Langerhans 7 CF Rowland for A. Jones - Jones 10 / Rowand 8 RF Abreu for Francoeur - Abreu 10 / Francouer 7 Then, its Phi = 72, Atl = 67 Still pretty close, but i still take Philly. Of all the players on either side, Utley and Howard have the most potential upside going forward, and Rollins, Burrell and Abreu are all still in their prime. The only player i'd take from Atlanta is A. Jones, and i think McCann will be a solid offensive catcher. Chipper and Giles are oft-injured and in decline.

  22. i root for the laundry. clemens, bonds, whoever... come on down. Its not like we're talking about building him a memorial, or that he'll then go into the HOF with the Mets insignia on his hat. IMO, we are exactly 1 clemens-type pitcher away from going to a WS (which is also true of a number of other teams, some of whom we'll have to face in the playoffs).
  23. if anybody can win the TC, it would be Alberto.

    Clutch?

I'm not saying "clutch" does NOT exist. I'm just skeptical of that label, in most cases, as being a designation foisted on a hitter by fans, the media and other players, based on anecdotal data and limited sample size. If Perez consistently hit well, and better than he normally did, in those various "clutch" situations, and he continued to do so over a sustained period of years, one would have to discount luck and acknowledge that he was a player who excelled in pressure situations. Even Bill James has sort of come around on this topic. But i still think its an overused tag, and is often used to justify otherwise mediocre players, or to villify terrific players, based on little more than a media or fan perception not otherwise supportable by existing data.
