  1. True, the role lefty specialists has been diminished by the 3 batter rule, but there is certainly a place for a quality lefty (or two) in the pen. It's still quite helpful to have a reliable lefty to face a Harper, Soto, Olson, Freeman, Bellinger, Alvarez, Ohtani, etc. in a big spot with the game on the line. It's not like teams are going to pinch hit for these sluggers.
  2. =Gwreck post_id=97983 time=1656732699 user_id=56] Two things can be true. (The genius was his agent)
  3. Generally, the bullpen is a time for angst. Diaz has been solid and Drew Smith has had a few rough outings, but has been pretty good the majority of the time. Lugo and Ottavino need to get some consistency, they seem to be hit or miss. The lack of a reliable lefty out of the bullpen has been a problem all seaon and seems more evident with each time we call on one of our "lefty specialists". I have virtually no faith in Shreve or Rodriguez.
  4. It's not that Bonilla was such a genius, it's that the mets brass were such inept idiots.
  5. The starting rotation continues to fall apart due to injury and illness. Going into the July 4th weekend, the rotation is essentially, Walker, Peterson, Scherzer, a struggling Carrasco, and Trevor Williams until Bassitt returns from the COVID IL. The bullpen beyond Diaz (possibly D. Smith) "...is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." The bullpen is devoid of a reliable lefty. I am growing increasingly concerned. The Mets are treading water right now. They were barely above .500 for the month of June. The Mets need DeGrom to join Scherzer at the top of the rotation. I have no doubt that DeGrom will eventually pitch and I expect him to do so at an elite level. I just don't have faith that he will do so for an extended period. The Mets need a left handed reliever that can be counted on to shut done the opposition most of the time.
  6. The stole the White Sox uniforms of the early 1980's. All they changed was the "S" for an "R". Of all the uniform designs to steal, they had the choose that one? http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2008/0627/pg2_g_koosman_600.jpg>
  7. Great swing and pretty decent second baseman, but well past his prime when the Mets traded for him. Diaz at least has been pretty solid the past 2 years.
  8. Marte strike out on a hanging high slider just begging to be hit hard.

  10. Drew Smith makes short work of the Phillies 2-3-4 hitters.
  11. J.D. hit it well, but Quinn was shading him toward right and easily made the catch.
  12. Phillies D is the gift that just keeps giving. Hoskins boots an easy grounder to allow the leadoff Met (Lindor) to reach.
  13. Girardi decides not to pinch hit for the youngster Stott with chance to close the gap and Shreve carves him up to end the inning.
  14. Bassitt sharp again. He doesn't have overpowering stuff, but he is tenacious and just knows how to pitch. Reminds me a little of Hershiser in that respect.

  17. When it's cold outside I've got the month of May It's awesome baby The Mets came to play
  18. I here what you are saying, roger-that, but I have enjoyed their comebacks (5 runs in St. Louis and 7 runs in Philly). It is a sign of a team that doesn't quit or give up. As Ronnie said, they play hard for 27 outs. There is a lot to like in that. The infield hits and hustle in those comebacks (and during most of the young season) are a testament of a team that is playing hard and refuses to give in to the opposition. I'll take a team that never quits and fights through the tough times. As long as the starting pitching remains solid, the Mets should continue to be a tough team to beat. I worry about there not being enough quality depth in the bullpen.
  19. I was out with the family this evening. When I came home, I rushed to my computer to stream the game. Already down 5-0 to the Phillies in the 3rd innning. Meanwhile, the Crane Pool IGT was busy arguing over the Aerosmith's place in the pantheon of classic rock bands. Sometime in the 4th or 5th inning with the Phillies up 7-0 I decided it was a good night to have a beer and catch up on some reading. Came in a short while ago preparing to go to bed early. Decided to check the score before calling it a night and couldn't believe my eyes. Now I'm too stoked to go to sleep. Inspiring win for the Mets and a soul crushing defeat for the Phillies. I feel so unworthy, as a result of my lack of faith.

  21. Reading this thread has been far m0re enjoyable than watching the beat down the Phillies are putting on the Mets tonight.
  22. Second doubleheader sweep of the young season.
  23. I really liked Drew Smith last year. This year I absolutely love him.
  24. Well, this definitely shows how much things have changed with the current Cohen ownership era vs. the Wilpon era Mets. No way in hell, the Wilpons would have ate that salary. They almost assuredly would have optioned Guillorme or Davis, or possibly released Jankowski outright. It's great to have an ownership that makes decisions based on actual baseball considerations rather than financial ones.
