1. Aha!Thanks for the help. I kinda wish I'd met Willie Stargell.
2. I always liked the old-style square caps:They used to put little gold stars in the hats, as I remember from cards around 1980, but I can't find any good photos of it quickly. I don't know why they did it, but I remember seeing it.
3. Nice job cooby! (Even cited your source at the end, which makes all of us librarians and/or scholars proud.)This is a series that the Mets really should win, and will likely need to do so in order to keep pace. The Marlins are playing the Cubs, who have lost eight straight, the Braves play Milwaukee, who are due to start their midsummer swoon any day now, and the Phils play the Nationals, who are still in first place, although showing signs of cracking. A sweep is nice, at least 2 out of 3 is necessary.
4. "Giambino"... Sterling, STFU.
5. It's also interesting that there's nobody really that similar to Foster; 921 is a relatively average similarity score. He was a thumping outfielder; you'd think they're a dime a dozen in baseball history, but I guess not.
6. I can't believe I actually gave Piazza a PotG vote. I'm losing it.Yancy, do you need someone to start Schaefer polls for these games?
7. 20 runs without the benefit of a home run. I guess drawing fourteen walks will do that.
8. Ditto smg and Yancy.I wasn't a Mets fan yet in '82... was Foster hated at the time? I would have assumed that would have been an exciting trade when it went down.
9. Wow... metscollector.com is really impressive, especially to a baseball card junkie like me.
10. And the Metsies are back out of the cellar.
11. Sportsline showed me this:Piazza hit into double play, Beltran scored, Floyd out at home, Piazza out at second. All I saw was the first part... so I came back over here to bitch... and I saw everyone else's reactions. Only then did I go back and read the whole thing. Weird. I almost typed "I smell double play", but changed it at the last second. That would have been freaky.
12. Here comes Piazza. I smell groundout...

14. Hey, any time you can catch a break, you take it. Let's! Go! Mets! Let's! Go! Mets!
15. Come on, Heath... drill him. (Or at least buzz one under his nose.)
16. And the leadoff man is on with a hit. COME ON, Heath.
17. And we go to the ninth. Boy, this is nerve-racking for a "meaningless July game."
18. When the skies are brighter canary yellowI forget ev'ry cloud I've ever seen,So they called me a cockeyed optimistImmature and incurably green.I have heard people rant and rave and bellowThat we're done and we might as well be dead,But I'm only a cockeyed optimistAnd I can't get it into my head.I hear the human raceIs fallin' on its faceAnd hasn't very far to go,But ev'ry whippoorwillIs sellin' me a bill,And tellin' me it just ain't so.I could say life is just a bowl of JelloAnd appear more intelligent and smart,But I'm stuck like a dopeWith a thing called hope,And I can't get it out of my heart!

DC Days

Can't you at least try to find a men's room somewhere other than right next to the grill?
20. I'll be in Norwich, CT on Saturday to catch the B-Mets and the Navigators. Full report when I return.
21. Heilman definitely earned himself a Schaefer point or two right there.
22. Ah, old what's-his-name, who immediately started ripping the clubhouse as soon as he left. Too bad your career is virtually over, pal.
