  2. I eyeballed his game logs to see what the hiccup was. He had about 15 less Ks then his five-year average, and 15 more home runs than his five-year average.
  3. Gives up an ungodly number of home runs, but other than that, is remarkably consistent. Between 199-220 innings the last five years with 120ish Ks, doesn't walk guys, ERA in the high 3s (3.84, 3.88, 5.07, 3.74, 3.79). I'd absolutely sign him.
  4. Whoops. Fixed. Apparently my gut didn't think he was all that impressive.

I don't believe he is ready to retire. I think this time next year we are in the same situation we had three years ago when his last contract expired. And they will overpay him again. It's great. Yup. Although how funny would it be to see him do reasonably well, but have the team tank, so there's a "trade him?" air hanging around all summer?
  6. Came through my email this morning shortened to "Mets and Cle" as the subject line. Was sure it was a trade announcement with the Indians.
  7. Gah. This team sucked. My "gut" list: Harvey Wright Murphy Byrd Lagares Niese Gee Buck Duda Young Wheeler Satin Parnell Hawkins Quintanilla Rice Hefner Davis Tejada Brown Turner Recker Baxter Torres Aardsma Matsuzaka Valdespin Atchison Mejia Flores
  8. There are too many demands on everyone's time to sit down and invest 3-4 hours in a game, six or seven nights in a row (more or less) when you don't particularly care about either of the teams. The Super Bowl is AN EVENT, so everyone watches it. You can't do that with baseball. I do understand the youth thing to a certain extent, though. They were particular about that in the Little League managers' meeting this spring. They said they were losing kids to lacrosse, which has more constant action, so they really wanted us to make sure that everyone involved was having a good time.

Love the music notes at the base of the tree too -- the first notes of "Take Me Out." Yep, missed that too. Very kool. Whats Alex Trebek doing in between Roberto Clemente and Hank Aaron? That's definitely Marvin Miller. And the "here" flag comes from one of the ballparks, but I don't know which. The only thing I can think of is the Cubs "W" flag, but that's obviously a "W" flag and not a "HERE" flag.

  12. They're a second fiddle in a major market that isn't content to just play second fiddle? I wish, man.
  13. metsguyinmichigan wrote: It seems like every year there are some free agents who the scribes feel the Mets should fixate on, and then pummel them when they go elsewhere. Note that Wilpon is put in a defensive mode here about not signing an unproven Cuban defector for a position at which they are well-stocked and have much more pressing needs. But the Mets don't sign them, the team is derided as failures and you get those "Player X rejected the Mets because they are a crappy organization." What you don't get are the stories later, when it becomes clear that the team made the right move. Remember the frenzy last year over Michael Bourn? Who was the pitcher who we were allegedly chasing hard who ended up signing with Angels had a shitty season? We don't see those "Mets made right call" stories. Not for nothing, but this is half of the reason why I don't know why anyone DOES sign in New York. It's a no-win situation. (The other half is the douchebaggery element of our fan base that still hates Carlos Beltran.)
  14. This guy slays me. "Are you a slave? How do you know they want to be free?"

  16. I love baseball books. I'm excited about the Mookie and Expos ones, and the '76 one will be interesting. What's Bill Denehy's deal?
  17. This one is fun, if imperfect: I enjoyed that one enough to actually purchase it. It's sitting in a box somewhere. Should pull it out and reread it.
  18. Actually, that "Facing" book would be hilarious if it was all soft rain on the outside like that, but inside was only interviews from guys like Matt Franco and Luis Gonzalez.
  19. That was just as awesome as it ever is. I could watch that over and over. So many neat little details that you pick up with repeated viewings. The guy in the Death mask down on field level, for example. And Vin Scully, just letting the celebration happen without speaking a word. Beautiful.
  20. Inspired by this, which is old and I'd seen it before, but it came across my feed this morning: [youtube:2qvq5svb]a-GgbP9C9Zk[/youtube:2qvq5svb] I'm rewatching the eighth inning on, since everyone else went to bed. John McNamara currently going BANANAS over the missed force play in the bottom of the ninth.
  21. It's not like @MLB doesn't know that, too. Very odd. * Shin-Soo Choo discovers what most of us already knew its not wise to run on Juan Lagares: (September 24, 2013) * Behold Juan Lagares right arm: (August 21, 2013) * Juan Lagares plays a tremendous center field. 23. Tweet earlier said he's a partial owner of the D-Backs; he'd have to relinquish that first.
