  1. I really just did a check to see where the number stood. It is a great reference site, as is yours. Seeing how you are a numbers guy, I will break down a couple things for you. Deceased Met players: 1-Gil Hodges 10-Cal Koonce 20-John Milner 25-Dick Selma 30-Tug McGraw 40-Bill Graham 50-Tom Sturdivant 60-Gary Carter And heres one more. At the time of the September 11th attacks, the Met count was at 666. Ironically it was C.J. Nitkowski, a deeply religious man. How's that for a bad omen? I'm sure you guys on this site already knew this.

  3. For the record, Carter is the 60th Met player to die. That number has doubled in the 8 years since Tug became number 30.

"I had a lot of clutch hits in my career. And I had a chance to do what he did, and I feel that I failed. But Gary got it done. He was the right guy for that situation. He was stronger than I was. I wasn't afraid of those situations. But he welcomed them. It wasn't just about ability. It was about his approach, his makeup. He wanted to be the hero. And you've got to have a player like that. wow, is that a recent take or historical? Recent. Got it off Mets.com. It may be as recent as yesterday.

  6. I haven't felt this hurt since Tug. Gary was the missing piece. Someone that never gave up. This is a huge loss and may be the biggest loss of all in our 50 years.

Would a Richie Hebner or a Vince Coleman show up? And based on your experience, would they be well-received? One more question: Is there going to be a gap at future Met-intensive shows given that so many Met stars from the past ten or so years have or presumably will have retired to Latin America? (Followup: Is language a barrier in situations like those?) A Met pariah event would be something. Not sure fans would come out to greet Bobby Bo or Mel Rojas. Interestingly, I once asked Richie Hebner why he despised being a Met so much. He said, in his best salty New England accent, "What was I supposed to do, be happy?, we f*ckin sucked." There are some great obscure latino Mets, that I would love to meet. Sergio Ferrer, Luis Rosado, the other Pedro Martinez. That should make it interesting for the future. Not sure you'll see too many of them around town. I attended the BAT event Tuesday night and was able to see Willie Montanez. I asked Benny Ayala, like I do most years to bring in a Mario Ramirez or Ricky Otero. That would be cool.
  8. I think after Choo Choo there really arent that many well known out of the spotlight Mets. The true recluses are guys like Brock Pemberton or Bob Rauch. But like the guy in Shawshank sort of said "I don't think they'll put up much of fuss for an old Met like that." When I checked Clarence in on Friday night, I had to literally show him how to use a key card in his hotel room door. Saw him last night and he told me he's doing pretty good with the key. (They've had him at three different hotels). He's got a perpetual smile. Last night was cool too. He came down to the hotel lobby and sat around shooting the shit with Ralph Kiner, Orlando Cepeda, Bernard Gilkey and Randy Myers. Quite a sight.
  9. In the flesh. Happy to serve the Met community whether they just root or root and collect.
  10. I hear what you're saying. Through the years my wife has occasionally given me a hard time, but I always keep it in check. That being said, bringing Clarence back to New York. Seeing the smiles on everyones faces, from young and old fans, to Met personnel and former players and HOFers. Giving him a sense of respect he hasnt realized in decades has made it all worth it for me. He appreciated the scratch too.

  13. The hypocrisy of the whole process is the bar being raised for some and not others. There are loads of undeserving HOFers going back as far as WWII. Tinkers, Evers and Chance were elected because of a poem. Rick Ferrell, a catcher with less career home runs than his brother Wes, a pitcher. Was he someone's drinking buddy? Rizzuto, Mazeroski, Maranville, Reese. Gil wasn't as good as Reese? The list goes on and on. Red Schoendienst had an average career and went in as a player. Don't tell me the overall package of winning as a player, manager, and longtime coach, didn't get Red elected. Fred Lindstrom, a guy that never received as much as 5% of the vote by writers. But Gil, a great power hitter in his day, when power hitting actualy required power, falls short? It's all a crock of shit. The Hall of Opinions.
  14. Two other exMet transactions. Both scouting related. The Orioles named Gary Rajsich their Director of Amateur Scouting. The Mets named Kevin Roberson their scout in the Arizona-New Mexico-Colorado-Nevada region.

  16. Do you wonder if Napoli was thinking, here comes my ring and MVP award as Feliz's pitch to Freese was on its way to Mike's glove?
  17. You know, I'm going to retract most of what I said in my post. I think my disappointment in seeing Albert and Yady jumping up and down is clouding my judgement. Endy has to be a bum at this point and Nelson Cruz is one of the better young players in the game. So it is what it is. And Washington appeared to have made the right move with Holland. Derek was sitting there in the dugout waiting for the Rangers closer to finish it off and give him win number two. Again, it is what it is. That being said good luck tonight Texas and Nolan and fuck you St Louis.
  18. The knock on Cruz is that he's not going to run into a wall for you. Of course McCarver would downplay it, he's a former player. Not gonna knock a stud player just cause he looks like Muffy on the most important putout of his career. It wasn't as obvious as Buckners, but it was just as damaging. The comparison to Johnny Mac was geared more toward not having the best available defensive options out there to put it away. If Endy isn't a viable option, then why the hell carry him on your roster? For his power? He may have bad wheels, but one thing we've learned from Endy is he plays the outfield with a sense of urgency when the situation calls for it. If I'm a Ranger fan, I'm throwing my beer at the tv after that play. Cruz should have had it. Or at the very least look better missing it. Maybe I don't know the ins and outs of the Rangers outfield. I don't follow them. Just get ticked off as a fan, when a guy looks like Manny on a catchable ball. Back In Curt Flood's day, he broke the wrong way for a second and was remembered forever for that miscue. Guys today get a pass, cause most people watching don't know what they're seeing. Washington made some key mistakes with the pitchers late in that game. Bringing in Holland was a desperate move usually done by the team facing elimination. I didn't see LaRussa hit the panic button and go with Carpenter.

Then it dawned on me that maybe Ron Washington had the good sense to put him in for defense for the ninth. When I saw Nelson Cruz and his pathetic attempt to field Freese's line drive, I realized that Washington was more McNamara than McGraw. Just think how sweet it would have been having Endy wrap it up by robbing another St Louis third baseman. I would have cheered. Oliver in the tenth? Geez, the only thing missing would have been a shot of Beltran in the stands. Tonight's prediction-blowout St Louis ala 85 Royals. supposedly Castillo was in teh stands. yeah, if Endy was in for Cruz it's the offseason. After watching the replay, I think if _I_ was in for Cruz it's the offseason. Dewey Evans makes that catch.

  21. How's that for continuing careers of exMets in the WS? Game 5 Darren Oliver WP Octavio Dotel LP Congrats DO.
  22. Green shoulder isn't Keith. Hernandez is standing just to our right of Ray Knight.
  23. The guy next to Hojo is Terry Leach, next to Davey is Mel. Mr. IHOMJICSLDYHTC looks like Danny Heep. Next to Elster is Lyons and Sisk. Guy behind Straw looks like Berenyi. Behind Knight is Aggie. Cyclops is Buckner. Guy behind Buddy may be Mags. Two guys at far right are John Mitchell and John Gibbons. Guy left of Mitchell may be Rick Anderson.
  24. Isn't Hurst the pitching coach for the Kingsport Mets? This is a Met Hunter style topic. Wes Gardner.
  25. OK, with four teams left in the playoffs, lets see who will join the list of continuing careers of players that played in and won a World Series AFTER leaving the Mets. Some of these names were painful to type. 1964 Roger Craig 1965 Bob L. Miller 1967 Ed Bressoud, Jack Lamabe 1971 Bob Johnson, Bob L. Miller 1979 Tim Foli, John Milner 1980 Tug McGraw, Del Unser 1983 Benny Ayala, Jim Dwyer, Joe Nolan, Ken Singleton 1987 Juan Berenguer, Jeff Reardon 1988 Danny Heep, Tim Leary 1990 Randy Myers, Herm Winningham 1991 Rick Aguilera, Terry Leach, Junior Ortiz, Kevin Tapani, David West 1992 David Cone, Pat Tabler 1993 Tony Fernandez 1995 Charlie O'Brien, Alejandro Pena 1996 David Cone, Darryl Strawberry 1997 Bobby Bonilla, John Cangelosi 1998 David Cone 1999 David Cone, Darryl Strawberry 2000 David Cone, Jose Vizcaino 2002 Kevin Appier, Alex Ochoa 2005 Carl Everett, Timo Perez 2006 Braden Looper, Preston Wilson 2010 Guillermo Mota I only counted those that played. The 90s featured an exMet in every World Series that decade. The 1997 Marlins had 9 players that had a continuing career of not playing in and winning a World Series by becoming Mets.
