  1. In all fairness to Mr. Baggarly... Mike Soroka WAS really, rilly, rully good. And you could argue-- https://theathletic.com/1367983/2019/11/11/hi-mets-fans-please-dont-hate-me-for-voting-mike-soroka-over-pete-alonso-for-nl-rookie-of-the-year/as Baggarly does, sorta-- that Soroka's primary skill (suppressing HRs) is a rarer thing in this league/environment.
  2. That is some fine sussin'. "AT LEAST two uniformed Astros." Who's to say that Beltran and McCann-- redolent of two years of MFY stink together in 2015-16-- weren't both in on it?
  3. Stylewise, wasn't Fredi, like, all kinds of red-assy? Like, Cuban Earl Weaver/Guillen-type, ejections galore? If so, might be an interesting pairing, given that El Es Aqui is generally Senor Sangfroid (to his PR detriment among a certain play-the-game-the-right-way contingent)... but it ain't my favorite disposition in a dugout, and I can't imagine it wouldn't grate on most of last year's returnees.
  4. 2-time MVP Murphy had a higher peak, and "2-time-MVP" sounds great in a credential-philippic, but-- blame physical decline, blame Chick-Fil-A-- Dewey Evans was a better player for longer. Also, history likes his defensive gifts a LOT more in retrospect (and people liked them plenty at the time), and he was starter-on-a-good-team good right up until age 37 or 38. Gimme Evans/Keith/Whitaker, with Simmons JUST missing.
  5. You know who your closer is? It's the guy who's available and best suited to close that day.
  6. Ideologically, probs more with us than agin' us. Practically, he'd show. At least if this were to happen in the next 1-2 years.
  7. Any ballot including Garvey over Keith is a spray-tanned joke.
  8. =Fman99 post_id=25989 time=1572920586 user_id=86] Not a single Met got even an honorable mention among the Gold Glove announced winners, that I noticed.
  9. No WH trip any time soon: Stroman Nido (PR) Diaz (ditto) Smith Better-than-average likelihood of "no:" Thor Conforto Lowrie Gsellman Better-than-average chance of showing: Nimmo Cano Ramos (just guessing, owing to personal experiences, that he's a big law-and-order, rules-are-rules guy) Rosario Familia Matz (charity work in Honduras... but married to Christian rocker, big on bible study, and seems unlikely to turn down a Presidential invite from anyone) Davis Oswalt deGrom (sadly) Wilson (Orange County bro, straight through college) There with MAGA hat on: Lugo Wheeler
  10. Edgy MD wrote: Oddly enough, Beltran himself got to go out on top as a player, retiring after winning a championship with the 2017 Astros. But yeah, managers are, by and large, hired to be fired, so "It won't end well" is an easy enough prediction. How about "It will end with disgraceful tabloid headlines, secret leaks, and "player sources"... and all after a nominally-successful season?" Is that specific enough? I was being a bit coy. I meant that the Wilpons' heavy hand will contribute to an outcome that doesn't meet expectations, and Beltran will be the scapegoat. Because it's NEVER the fault of the guys who sign the paychecks. I don't pray, but if I did, I'd pray for impotent Wilpons. Because as long as there are children, Lord...
  11. The Collins suggestion came from Beltran, as per Tracky. This TOTALLY won't end well, almost certainly almost entirely because it's Wilpon-suffused. But today, I'm toasting. The guy wanted to manage in New York so badly, he opted to return to THIS work environment. You can't say he doesn't know what he's getting into.

But judging from the reaction here and across the internet... do you think that's the case here? 41Forever wrote: But it seems to me that if the owners want to have a sports website, and readers are seeking a sports website as a respite from what's in their face everywhere else, then it's not unreasonable to request employees post sports-related stories. The new owners are a private equity group that has previously gone (or tried to go) the content-farm route with their acquisitions (see Forbes.com for the former, and the LA Mothertrucking Times for the latter). Use your experience in journalism to tell me what you think is more likely: that they're taking a bold new step toward a streamlined New Sports Journalism, or that they're clearing the decks?
  15. I mean, they've also published a bunch of brilliant journalism. Frank and profane most of the time, frank and profane and silly and weirdly touching at their best. If nothing else, there's the lesson here that there's still value in standing up to the powerful and shitty.
  16. Why exactly did they pull Greinke, again? A HR to the other team's best hitter, and a pitcharound walk to the second-best?
  17. =Fman99 post_id=25535 time=1572487716 user_id=86] It's Game 7 and I'm going to bed. I just don't care. Plus I'm a tired old man.
  18. I haven't seen Greinke look like this in, like, 4 years/3 teams
  19. Joe Morgan Honorary Obvious Color Observation: the Astros will rue not hanging crooked numbers on Scherzer in these first few innings... he's giving them every opportunity to do so.
  20. Gotta be, right? Right up there with that and Tudor-Sabes and... let's see... Koufax-Kaat. Ain't there a rule about wearing the same jerseys at home and away? There oughta be-- this color-war business, ma-RON.
  21. 7th inning of a World Series Game 6 might not be the best time to go pointlessly red-ass, Davey Boy.
  22. Edgy MD wrote: Oh, yeah. Give in to the mystery, man. They can appoint Grady Little's perpetually confused younger brother, and he still comes in 0-0, without any "See you tomorrow" freakouts on his record — certainly not in a Mets locker room. I personally wouldn't care if they teased it out through the new year. I know it affects offseason player negotiations, so sure, you've got to make the hire ASAP and move on. But in the meantime, as far as I know, until they hire somebody, the next manager is John J. McGraw with a better sense of humor. Mickey didn't work out, but I still applaud the boldness of the hire. The next skipper could be a fart in a spacesuit, but he or she gets to put his or her name on a Mets era and it will stay there as long as there is a Mets. That's always cool. I'd stipulate to "interesting," or "mild fun." But in the era of shifts-called-from-your-laptop, pitching-changes-dictated-from-the-assistant-GM, dugout stewardship really ain't what it used to be. Does a managerial hire really affect player acquisition/negotiations much?
  23. WAAAAAAY too close to take, Master Robles.
  24. I'm not typically one to get all red-ass, but... post-HR choreography in the dugout when said HR only puts you within three of tying, and said HR BARELY made it out of the damn park, AND you're about to lose your third straight at home... well, it ain't a great look.
