  1. He's been pretty awful in odd years, and good-to-very-good in even years. So... he's due?
  2. Marte isn't, like, a crazy-good center fielder any more. Maybe not even a center fielder, really. Anyway, he's about as much of one as Nimmo is. Who, again, is cheaper. And a little better, maybe. With room for improvement, somewhat. Why are we doing this again?
  3. LaStella-Trout-Rendon-Ohtani is a decent way to start your lineup.
  4. The good news is, $3M guaranteed is pretty cheap. The bad news is, it's appropriate. And that it has a significant nonzero chance of being the only non-minor-league-deal attempt to shore up our starting staff. He's always been much more of a weak swings/contact inducer than a wipeout-K-guy; if he's getting hit, he's getting lit. And as a changeup guy with a recurrent shoulder issue and an increasingly-straight fastball...

Strongly worded message to follow. This is the reaction a half day into the meetings? Really? No. It's the reaction 2 3/4 days into the meetings. It's profoundly depressing that we apparently have to sell in order to afford a Porcello or Betances.
  6. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=28022 time=1575928219 user_id=68] Maybe the Nats won't regret the contract. Maybe the richest baseball owners have so much goddamn money, more than ever, that maybe they're not running their teams with such a rigid eye on the balance sheet. Maybe some of them just want to win at all costs. Meanwhile, some people here are contorting themselves into triple pretzels trying to convince everybody, against all logic that Jeff Wilpon is either a competent owner or that he doesn't matter to the Mets fate and that Steven Cohen doesn't really want to take over the Mets.

Lefty Specialist wrote: =nymr83 post_id=28007 time=1575921165 user_id=54] It's been scientifically proven* that CitiField in April is at least 25% colder than anywhere in the city of New York at the same moment. This post is months old but just cracked me up. We always use the formula of 'lowest temperature predicted overnight' minus 20 degrees, and dress accordingly. Does this mean down jackets in May? Why, yes it does.
  8. Ces? Given the proper approach, Amed could hit 5 first-pitch HRs against him next year.
  9. I mean, it's not without charms. But I ain't, y'know, fighting a city full of costumed gangs to see it, y'know?
  10. Vic Sage wrote: there was also a biopic with Jeffrey Right from the 1990s. With Bowie as Warhol! Directed by painter/director Julien Schnabel, who later made Before Night Falls, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and that movie about Van Gogh with Willem Defoe from last year. They're all beautiful movies-- visually and otherwise-- about creativity/striving in the face of death/adversity (among many other things). (Diving Bell-- about a French journalist who suddenly finds himself stricken with "locked-in syndrome," is a personal favorite among them.) Downtown 81 is okay, IIRC, but even when i saw it (back around/right after initial release) it was mostly of value as a visual nostalgia trip.
  11. I've always liked Kenedy Corona... only we called it "daiquiri with extra lime."
  12. Lefty Specialist wrote: Just wondering, does Steve Cohen have a dipshit son with delusions of grandeur? I'm hoping not. He's a wealth-amassment and hedge-fund-venture-capital-bro-hemoth, who pulled himself to a splashy Greenwich pad all the way up from his hardscrabble upbringing on the superrich side of Great Neck. He's a 63-y/o dude, onto the 2nd upgrade spouse, about whom you've heard plenty about splashing money on a Giacometti or parody-of-a-rich-person-sized mansions, and nary a whit of charitable investment, outside of veterans'-group giving that's essentially a https://fortune.com/2018/08/03/hedge-fund-billionaire-steve-cohen-veterans-why-are-people-angry/sideways way of privatizing the VA... and the occasional art museum handout. He spends more on seed money for cryptocurrency and fin-tech startups yearly than Texas does on its college football coaches, or sub-Saharan Africa does on public health. Thought experiment: what kind of kid do you think he'd raise? Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe his assistant picked a kind, wise nanny. BTW, that DN piece was written by ex-Deadspinner/frequent target of CPF ire David Roth. Take issue with some of his tone or elisions, but "vinegary, incoherent grievance" sounds like a pretty tight sum-up of Wilponalia to me.
  13. Sure, you may not need it, per se, but it's hard to say no to Max Moroff when it comes gratis with your Fire TV Cube and free shipping
  14. =bmfc1 post_id=27726 time=1575561731 user_id=73] Gerrit Cole to the MFYs. Good. Keep him out of the NL.
  15. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: So Lagares for Lagares and 2 minor leaguers. Actually Marisnick is like a premium-tier Lagares the "] Hey, it's business as usual in free agency for the BINO (Big Market team in Name Only). We get Marisnick, lose Wheeler and, of course, pass on Cole because we're not allowed to sign the very best players. And Michael Cohen might be, oh my, worse than the Wilpons. We're going to be seeing a lot of each other this off-season, aren't we, Running Gag?
  16. As would I... but injury history/arm mileage does have SOMETHING to do with the wariness, too. He's been a different dude since the dirt bike dust-up two years ago (lower fastball velocity, significantly fewer K/9)... if he's performing at this level now, he's not worth 22M/year over 4-5 years; if this is just him working his way back in extended fashion from the 2017 injury, and you think he's got brighter days ahead, THEN you give him the money.

He does seem better at crime at least.

Chad ochoseis wrote: Am I the only one who thinks that maybe, just maybe, 5 years at about $24 million per is a little rich for an almost 30 year old pitcher who has never had an ERA below 3.30 in a pitcher friendly park? Strange but true: perennial 4-5 WAR dude/All-Star Bumgarner is less than a year older than young up-and-comer Wheeler.
  19. Steve's a sweetheart. Like most modern sports franchise owners. https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/billionaire-steven-cohen-ramps-up-gop-donations-amid-hedge-fund-comebackhttps://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/billionaire-steven-cohen-ramps-up-gop-donations-amid-hedge-fund-comeback I mean, yeah. 20. Annette Bening is a hawt anything. I enjoy Driver, and I wouldn't quite call him a comic presence (he's solid like oak in Silence), but... a little lightweight? Maybe. I'm squarely in that good-not-great camp. It ain't Spotlight... but it's not Harriet, either.
  21. White Sox, um, 5/106

It's, like, a once-or-twice-a-year thing with my wife and me where we're home on a mutual off day, and the topic of older films/stars comes up, and we double-check on de Havilland, because our brains are aging, and we weren't all that smart to begin with. (Maureen O'Hara used to be part of this, until the other year. Hedy Lamarr's science pursuits usually come up, too.)
  23. I'd be open to this. I mean, taking on a heavily-used reliever and an onerous veteran contract, while paying full trade value for the former... how could this go wrong? Also, I, too, kinda hate gay people, think white power is 👊, and love non-apology-apologies. [Kicking the tires on Lorenzo Cain after a down year? Now, THAT'S something I could get behind.]
  24. Oh, dip! I didn't realize this was on Prime! In on this tonight.
