  1. And arm is the one thing Davis has in spades, defensively. Like, he's got a lot of throwing power, not that he fondles shovels.
  2. Watching these will likely be a weekly Friday/Saturday nights thing, rarer than some younguns would like, and much more frequently than some here would prefer. They wouldn't be the nicest uniform in the set, nor the second or third. But they aren't monstrosities.
  3. no numbers but...I think that Alonso will have more RBI than Nimmo will have Runs scored...and as much crap that Alonso gets for his defense, he's still a better choice as a 1B than Nimmo is as a CF https://pissmoan577884727.files.wordpress.com/2019/02/ref-flagging-1024x576.jpg?w=456&h=256>
  4. It's shitting on him with faint, shitty praise. A guy who gets on-base 40 percent of the time is GREAT at getting on-base. (In a "meh" year for Nimmo and a good year for Lindor, Nimmo's getting on-base 40 more times over the course of a season... which is a significant difference in terms of run production, donchaknow.) A guy who does that and gives you okay-to-okay-plus everywhere else in his game is a significant net-positive... and a top-10 player at his position in the league. That's what we've got in your latter-day-Heep. And I loved Mookie. But Nimmo's ABSOLUTELY starting over Mookie in left, in most cases.
  5. He just might come shining through... but not this year

  7. That walk-to-strikeout ratio for this game is frightening... and these are our mid-to-high-leverage RELIEVERS.
  8. Funny that after so many years of maligning Lagares, the front office(s) has essentially spent the last two offseasons trying to find the new JohnnyLags. Something like it here, I hope. .260/.300/.420 over 180 PA, with weird, intermittent 6 HR-but-with-three-or-four-in-the-same-fortnight pop.
  9. Even last year, he got on at a decent clip. So however lost in the woods and desperate he may get... he's probably not going to Rob Deer. Something like 42 HRs, 90+ runs, 120+ RBI, .258/.355/.520, 3 WAR.
  10. I'm starting to feel like he and deGrom have very similar thought processes on pitching... it's just that they seem to differ in terms of style/taste, not just aesthetics-wise, but method-wise. In one of his pressers he said his approach was to pitch according to a batter's weakness. Jake pitches to his strength - superior stuff, and dares the batter to be able to hit it. Later Attack-the-hitter versus execute-the-plan? Makes sense. That said, Stroman's stuff can be PLENTY nasty. (Click through for a fastball/"split change" overlay. Really.)

The biggest gift BVW gave us (sorry, Cano contract). It's a Bingo for me, too, minus the elbow problems, but with promising results.
  12. Meant to ask before, did Stroman look different to anyone? Maybe in my memory I'm conflating his face with someone else. A little more junky, but in a very, very good way. I'm starting to feel like he and deGrom have very similar thought processes on pitching... it's just that they seem to differ in terms of style/taste, not just aesthetics-wise, but method-wise.

  14. He's so WEE
  15. Thomas Szapucki You heard it here first. Later Oopsie. I hadn't realized he hadn't recovered as much from his surgery as I had hoped until I read this today: https://sports.yahoo.com/m/15ec5281-5fa3-364c-a389-2802d44e84b4/the-same-questions-remain-for.htmlhttps://sports.yahoo.com/m/15ec5281-5fa3-364c-a389-2802d44e84b4/the-same-questions-remain-for.html So I'll hope Thomas uses this year to fully recover while I change my choice to Sam McWilliams. Later Bartender? Scratch my previous Reid-Foley, and give me the same https://nypost.com/2021/02/27/mets-reliever-sam-mcwilliams-is-showing-off-his-wow-factor/tall drink o' water he's having.
  16. This guy is just plain adorable, showing off his care-package bounty from Turk. If he's halfway-effective, he could be a Bartolo-sized (but not Bartolo-sized) fan favorite.
  17. I never trust a man, never mind a backstop, with two first names. Could have sworn I remembered him having more pop a few years ago. Basically, though, he's Nido, only with higher highs (better glove?) and lower lows (worse bat, apparently).
  18. Lefty Specialist wrote: Spring training is around the corner, and they've improved, but is it enough? They don't have a fifth starter, a real centerfielder or a third baseman who can field the position adequately. There are people occupying all of those positions, but..... 3rd Base is an overated need, McNeil would give us above average defense there and Villar would be good at 2nd if we wanted to go that route. Villar is a career 95 OPS+ with speed, nothing amazing but if he upgrades the defense in two spots we could do worse. I think this is the 'real plan' if Davis doesn't hit like he did in 2019 Villar isn't really a defensive upgrade anywhere so much as he is a band-aid at several-- like, SEVERAL-- spots (and an offensive lottery ticket.. which is much more livable if he's a backup plan). The hopes you're outlining here aren't wildly unrealistic... but they are somewhat ungrounded. Davis could be serviceable, or more than serviceable... but he could also be the player the Astros cut bait on, who flashes periods like 2019 but doesn't consistently deliver them, while giving you negative value in every other way. (Personally, I believe in the bat-- he basically had an extended struggle with breaking pitches last year, but the quality of contact stayed the same... and his eye got better.) That uncertainty is the thing, though... and it's something that top-tier championship contenders these days don't have (see: Dodgers, Padres). Let's just say I'd much rather have-- as a 1-2 year option, on an ostensible contending team-- Turner than Davis... or Jurrickson Profar as a 3B-convertible IF/OF backup plan than Villar.
  19. What, no Foyster Bay? Great Reck? David Westbury? Wanstraw? Dyer Island? Great to see Dom in camp. I missed his face. I missed his gentle-motivational-speaker optimism. I MISSED HIS MUSK
  20. That's YOUR takeaway???!? Lord love metbot.
  21. A Boy Named Seo wrote: Sub-tweeting is referring to somebody without tagging them in said tweet. Pretty on-brand that Bauer took it to "ALL HUMAN BEINGS MATTER" Somewhat besides the point, but... Stroman RESPONDED directly to his tweets, and the tweets of others in his thread. He didn't subtweet a damn thing. Funny that Mr. Extreeeeemely Online messed THAT up, too.
  22. Not that I'm surprised, but he looks BORN in blue-and-orange.
  23. Edgy MD wrote: "Homie"? Man, I hope they let pitchers bat forever. I don't think he's an absolutely irredeemable, awful human. But he definitely doesn't seem inclined toward self-reflection, and he positively REEKS of overpraised-as-a-child. I think he really, really thinks he's being subtle with shit like this. Some people, when plopped into insanely-complicated social milieu-- online subcultures, bustling marketplaces in foreign countries, arcane-industry workplaces-- just get the basics of what's going on, almost-innately, and with a hefty soupcon of close listening. Others read the literature, slam the audiobooks, and otherwise try really, really hard... to varying effect. Trevor? Well, he works hard. I just think that-- as much as he puts time into this-- he's TERRIBLE at this online thing.
  24. Like JCL said, the first tweet was a zing-y, good-natured troll job. Bauer's response was to mine Syndergaard's timeline on another social-media app-- or, rather, to pull out something he'd PREVIOUSLY mined much earlier, according to the apparent timestamp-- for something objectionable... which is at least as cringeworthy in and of itself as Thor's doofy machismo. Also... considering his long history of being a variegated ass on Twitter, it seems like a pretty questionable decision. Y'know, like getting superpissy over something ELSE, a day afterward. https://defector.com/trevor-bauer-in-more-and-somehow-even-dumber-words-all-lives-matter/With ANOTHER Met pitcher. (BONUS: Extremely roundabout "All Lives Matter!")
