  1. Sometimes a change of scenery can help, and Kunz was probably not ready. On that alone, it helps the bullpen. If it was for AHernandez, then it's definitely a good deal. Hernandez was not going to do much for the team, this year or next.
  2. Ultimately, Delgado is the safest and probably best choice for 2009. If we knew we could get Teixeira, then buy out Delgado and jump it, but that's a real gamble. Teixeira will create a bidding war and Boras is going to go for the money. There's a good chance the Yankees will outbid us, and leave us with a bunch of untried minor leaguers or fading former stars. Keep Delgado and see how the young players develop. They see about using them in 2010.
  3. ="AG/DC"]Hit streaks end if you walk your way through a game, to my understanding. Unfair but there it is. Not so. According to the MLB Site: ="MLB"]Consecutive-Game Hitting Streaks: A consecutive-game hitting streak shall not be terminated if all the player's plate appearances (one or more) results in a base on balls, hit batsman, defensive interference or a sacrifice bunt. The streak shall terminate if the player has a sacrifice fly and no hit. The player's individual consecutive-game hitting streak shall be determined by the consecutive games in which the player appears and is not determined by his club's games. (bolding added)
  4. Wagner will be reahabbing in Brooklyn and is expected to be ready when he becomes eligible to play again next Monday.
  5. No one with my last name ever appeared in any major league pro sport. About the only celebrity is an obscure actor. In the UK, however, it's the name of a cigarette brand that sponsors auto racing and soccer.

That's the point of Wikipedia. I'm surprised how many people will say that Wikipedia is wrong about something, but who never mention correcting it.
  7. Brad Holt!
  8. It clearly shows that the Mets are unique. It can mean nothing else.
  9. A preview:
  10. Here are the original colors:
  11. Actually, it's a misnomer and misrepresenation* to call these "odds." It merely is a reflection of how often the teams won in their simulations. But the simulations are built on so many iffy assumptions as to make them meaningless: that players don't go into slumps, are not injured, that trades are not made, that past performance is a guarantee of future results, etc. All the numbers mean is that the simulations showed these results a certain percentage of the time. Their connection to the real world is tenuous at best and, at worse, no better than Madame Olga's crystal ball. *A typical tactic of sabermatricians, who often design models to determine certain characteristics and then claim the models prove or disprove something else.
  12. There are all very nice mental exercises, but ultimately silly and meaningless. Or have your forgotten that the Mets odds of making the playoffs in September 2007 -- from the same sources -- were 99%?
  13. I was at that game, the only All-Star game I could attend. Ran out on the field from the stands during the pregame. Security was not amused, but since I had press credentials, they just gave me a warning. I remember walking among the players, especially, for some reason, Wayne Gross.
  14. Perez 3 Beltran 2 Tatis 3 Smith 2
  15. A great story, both on the field, and as a pure refutation of certain basic fallacies of baseball analysis.
  16. ="KC"]There's a difference between being upset and smacking your hand against your glove and hustling off the field and being upset and looking like a baby. Only in the mind of the beholder. Do you want passion or not? Or only approved passion? Approved by you, of course. Seems to me, you can't complain that the players don't care and then criticize them for being immature when they do show they care. Which do you want? Pick one or the other. Because you can't have it both ways. If players are passionate, you're going to see displays of passion that you don't quite like. BTW, Reyes made it clear he was mad at himself, not Delgado. And if you have to constantly worry about showing people up, then there's no point in showing any passion for the game.
  17. Department of Wanting to Have Things Both Ways: "The team doesn't care. They need to show some passion for the game." "Reyes gets upset about his error. That's immature."
  18. metsguyinmichigan wrote: From what remember, starters would put in a token appearance for an inning or two, then folks were treated to AAA call-ups and bench players for the rest of the game. At that point, why bother?Doubleday Field was always packed for the game. Tickets sold out months in advance. And the fans in the area had few chances to see any MLB players, even AAA callups. The nearest minor league team is probably Binghamton -- an hour and a half away (it looks like Little Falls has an amateur summer team). It's a big deal for central NY. The end of the game was an MLB decision that had nothing to do with fan support for it.
  19. Plenty of obvious omissions and films listed that don't deserve it. That's par for the course. Just choosing one: ANIMATION 1. "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," 1937. 2. "Pinocchio," 1940. 3. "Bambi," 1942. 4. "The Lion King," 1994. 5. "Fantasia," 1940. 6. "Toy Story," 1995. 7. "Beauty and the Beast," 1991. 8. "Shrek," 2001. 9. "Cinderella," 1950. 10. "Finding Nemo," 2003. Drop Pinocchio, Bambi, The Lion King, Finding Nemo and Beauty and the Beast. Add The Iron Giant, Princess Monomoke, The Little Mermaid, Wallace and Gromit and the Curse of the Were-Rabbit (or the trilogy of W&G short subjects) and The Triplets of Belleville. If it's got to be only American films, then I'd add Dumbo, Hoodwinked, and The Last Unicorn instead of Monomoke, W&G & The Triplets.
  20. Rube Walker -- best pitching coach ever.
  21. I actually was going to mention The Flash, which was pretty good. The George Reeves Superman was good, if somewhat one-dimensional. Batman was a comedy about a superhero show, not really a superhero show. You also forgot The Green Hornet. The Tick (2001-02 / 9 episodes) - one of my favorites, i must've been the only one watching. You can still watch: http://www.hulu.com/the-tick (Yes, it's legal). I've been catching up, but it's funnier in concept than when it's played out on screen. And you've forgotten the best superhero show of them all: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  22. It was ridiculous that they didn't wait until today to make the announcement. I would assume that Minyana told Willie and the coaches about it after the game, but he should have postponed the announcement until today (maybe he was afraid the story would have leaked -- it probably would have -- but still he could have waited). This seems like he's sneaky and underhanded. I don't think the problems with the team are Willie's fault. Age is an issue, but so is the fact that the players aren't producing. Neither Reyes nor Wright are hitting at their best, Wagner is blowing saves, and Heilman has turned from a top reliever to a disaster. If you had Reyes, Wright, Wagner, and Heilman playing at the level they've shown they could play, and Ryan Church had been healthy, the team would be up there. I'm also surprised they fired Peterson. Admittedly the bullpen is a mess, but the starters have been excellent the past few weeks. Manuel may be in a lucky position if Wright, Reyes, and Heilman star producing and Church comes back. But there was no reason to make the announcement in the middle of the night like this. Waiting six hours wouldn't have killed anyone.
  23. It was par for the course for TV superhero shows at the time, all of which had a long way to go to be mediocre. There really wasn't a particularly good TV superhero until Lois and Clark.
