I don't remember Shinjo ever getting up over .280 as a Met. Don't knock Castillo. He was a good backup, and he was trilingual, which counts for a lot these days.
The thing about the postseason is, you're pitching to hitters who have proven themself -- by being there -- to be the best around, and are incredibly motivated. Saves are not automatic. That's one of the things that makes postseason baseball so great.
Lame, maybe. But illegal? Asking because I don't know the legality of this, for sure -- I know it would be illegal on a commercial website -- but just a discussion group among friends?
Christy Mathewson has always been one of my heroes. A great description of him in Mordecai Three Finger Brown's account of the Giants-Cubs playoff game in 1903 -- still one of the best pieces of baseball writing I have ever read.
My last one was another Halberstam book -- Teammates, about Williams, Doerr, Pesky and Dom DiMaggio. Highly recommended. And I wouldn't even mind going down memory lane and revisiting John R. Tunis (see What are you reading? in NBF).
]Quote: Good writers borrow from other writers. Great writers steal from them outright. --Sam Seaborn, The West Wing He's stealing outright from Steve Earle here. And T.S. Eliot before him.
I gave them to my grandson when he was in 5th or 6th and he wasn't quite ready for them. But some kids will be.I just reread "The Kid Comes Back" and still loved it.
Any of you who have teenagers who don't yet know about these, the greatest of all baseball novels, by John R. Tunis?
MFS -- I had a subscription to the Sporting News when I was a kid. Those were in the innocent days when it was a Baseball paper, and they had Willard Mullin cartoons, and we didn't yet know that J. G. Taylor Spink would turn out to be a fink for management.
So we'll discuss Bernard Gilkey, who still keeps that picture of himself as homecoming king above his desk at Gilkey and Sons Mortuary Parlor. We never told him it was only because we needed Dad's hearse for a limo, and I don't want to be the one who has one beer too many and shattered his illusions. Gimme a Met who was discovered in Schwab's drugstore.
