They could and probably should pinch-run for Polancky, but Jared Young is the only option. (Unless you want to use Nolan McLean.) -

Keith has a disc pinched in his back, giving him some pain and cutting off some function in his leg. He was talking about it yesterday and expects to be fine, but wasn't looking forward to flying, also describing that it was interfering with more everyday stuff like negotiating stairs. So I imagine getting treatment sooner rather than later spared him some difficulty. -

But it kind of jibes with the Lunchbucket thesis of propping guys up in the hope that they can figure it out for themselves. -

He doubled past the thirdbaseman, but it ricocheted off the cutout back toward Winn, so that is ... technically accurate. -

Gary just stated that the only other Met to get his first Mets win on Opening Day was Johan Santana. He must mean among newcomers or among starters, because I don't think that's true. I'm pretty sure Doug Sisk walked away with his first win on OD 1983 in relief of Seaver. -

Weird how they are again shut down by the opposition with a paucity of strikeouts needed. Like it's 1980 or something. The Mets have had some hard hit balls find gloves yesterday and today. No remarkable plays, but solid defense from the Cardinals all around. I might misremember but I think two of the Mets hits yesterday came on soft contact. -

Notable that there is no backup designated jock traveling with the team for such situations. It would have been interesting if J.D. Martinez got pressed into emergency service on his first full day on the payroll. -

I know Keith was hurting, but was he expected to head out mid-series, or is Zeile a sudden late addition? -

Some Sports Illustrated-affiliated outlet (I don't know where reports are coming at me from anymore) told me that the reason this took so long going down is that the Sox were asking for Baty, and while the Mets were turning that down, they were countering by offering Vientos. They apparently split the difference with Luisangel Acuna and Truman Pauley.

All accounts say that he "crushed" the ball, but the pitch was in on his hands a little bit, and he was still able to muscle it about seven feet past the fence. deGrom growing his hair again, though.

And that closes 2024. Transactions, 3/31/2026 COMING Hired by Mets as Special Assistant to President of Baseball Operations Outfielders J.D. Martinez R/R DoB: 34303 High Level: MLB (2024) With the announcement that J.D. Martinez has become a special assistant to President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, Mets Roster Central is pleased to mark the next destination of the last un-accounted-for Met of 2024. J.D. had left his retirement un-announced, presumably leaving himself open to further work, and even reportedly received an offer from the Rangers last June, all while publicly teasing his intended entry into the exciting world of professional pickleball. Accounting for free agents who don't sign elsewhere but never publicly announce a retirement may seem niggling, but at Mets Roster Central, keeping the books balanced is our business. And while we don't necessarily know what a SAttPoBO does, we are happy to see the books close on 2024 with Martinez moving on to another chapter, recalling the sad close of 2022 with the terrible passing of Terrence Gore back in February. These special assistant roles typically go to house legends and future Hall of Famers, and fellow SAttPoBO Carlos Beltran certainly fits that description. J.D. had a fine career, but is unlikely to find his name on a Hall-of-Fame plaque anytime soon, and was less-than-stellar as a Met, so we're left in a cloud of mystery, but that is nothing new. He's certainly a respected figure, but ... this serves to make the Mets feel just a little bit more Trumpy, and that's not a comfortable feeling. Keith made a Lou Brock reference without a graphic flying across the screen. Sleeping in the booth, or they've moved on.

The real problem is the guys they aren't pitching instead of him. No matter who it is, using the last guy in the pen as the first guy out of the pen isn't a winning play.
