The Diamondbacks have replaced their sand-colored outlines with turquoise ... and ugh. -

FATE: Imma fuck up Soto's leg. METS: OhmyGOD! Badly? FATE: Possibly. You won't really know. METS: Well, we're going to put him on the injured list until we're ABSOLUTELY sure he's 100%. Then we'll keep him out of games for two weeks after that. FATE: Imma also fuck up Polanco's leg. METS: You know? Let's just keep running him out there and see what happens. -

Let's go! Irish can give us a preview of the Athletics, and (if she re-offers) cooby can give us a preview of the Dodgers. More in line with the IGT here, how about Baty starting in right and bumping Benge to left! That's some faith in Baty's arm, right there! -

My plan was to have the players on each team elect one fitting teammate to wear it on Jackie Robinson Day every year. The compel-everyone-to wear-it plan is falling flat. Rachel Robinson, by the way, is 103, going on 104 in July. A hunnert and three! Maybe she should have a plaque in The Baseball Hall of Fame. -

Baseball teams need eye dudes. I used to know John Olichney, who was an attending physician with the Mets. He was the first guy on hand when Mookie took that ball to the face that shattered his sunglasses into his eye. I think John's specialty was neurology, but what was needed at the moment was an eye guy. Be the Mets eye guy!!

So, everybody's covered but Piazza. So the last answer must be ... Billy Wagner!
-
Yeah, the 2026 Mets have already had 10 games and two days off. In 1977, April 7 was opening day. Also, in 1977, the first nine games were day games.
-
I think he was a minor-league pitching coach back when.

Well, 20 hasn't been used in the 10 games since Alonso left the Mets. Nimmo's 9, McNibben's 1, and Diaz' 39 are also vacant so far in 2026, but your point is taken. -
Lee Smith stuck around long enough to get tagged by Piazza. (So did Gossage, but he is off the hook.)
-
Not many live a life as full as Ronnie Paul. That 1967 Winter Haven team he won those 17 games for was pretty stacked. His catcher was a not-yet-injured Steve Chilcott, but they also had Nolan Ryan, Ken Singleton, Steve Renko, Ed Figueroa, Mike Jorgenson, and others. Their .671 winning percentage puts them just a tick or so behind the 1983 Lynchburg Mets (.691!) in the great history of Mets minor-league juggernaut teams.
-
One takeaway from this kwizzicle is to underscore how notably few Hall of Fame starting pitchers the 80s produced. And one Hall-of-Famer who did peak in that era — Jack Morris — made it despite not having the strongest case.
-
Then clearly, Kranepool caught up with Rich Gossage during that awesome year Goose had with Pittsburgh before joining the Yankees. (I'm really stinking this kwiz up.)
-
Well, he may be in A hall. But you know who is in THE Hall? Warren Spahn is. And his crappy 1964 intersected with Ed Kranepool's first year with double-digit homers.
-
I don't think there is any evidence that he will be made or broken at the end of Soto's IL assignment, although I confess I really don't know what those words mean in this context.

Amazing to declare a number retired when it never even occurred to anybody to just unofficially stop using it in the 15 years since he left the team. FIFTEENS SINCE CARLOS BELTRAN 2012: Fred Lewis 2013: Travis d'Arnaud 2014: Travis d'Arnaud 2015: unassigned 2016: Matt Reynolds 2017: Matt Reynolds 2018: Luis Guillorme 2019: unassigned 2020: Brian Dozier Guillermo Heredia Juan Lagares 2021: Cameron Maybin 2022: Deven Marrero Matt Reynolds 2 2023: Danny Mendick 2024: Tyrone Taylor 2025: Tyrone Taylor 2026: Tyrone Taylor to start the season, even though it had previously been announced as designated for retirement, and then stripped from him ten games into the season. Those digits have had a rather strange path to suddenly becoming untouchably sacred. Danny Mendick! -
Minor-league players jettisoned from the organization? Players from three years ago finally retiring? NOPE! Mets Roster Central is here with powerful, relevant roster updates about the most powerful relevant player on their roster Transactions, 4/6/2026 GOING NEUTRAL GOING Placed on 10-Day IL, Retroactive to 2026-04-04, with Strained Right Calf Transferred from Infield Promoted from Syracuse Outfielders Outfielders Infielders Juan Soto Brett Baty Ronny Mauricio L/L DoB: 36093 High Level: MLB (2025) L/R DoB: 1999-11-13 High Level: MLB (2025) S/R DoB: 2001-04-04 High Level: MLB (2025) It's nobody's favorite hot, sinewy dose of reality, but you can put all the biggest resources to bear in securing the services of the most gifted players, but whether you wind up with Babe Ruth or Joe Shabotnik, the two of them will be worth exactly the same on the Injured List. So chase that shiny free agent, sure — and the Mets invested $765 million in chasing Juan Soto down — but the winning move is always depth, depth, depth. And then, maybe, you might want to add a little depth. While Juan's role in left field will be covered by some combination of Brett Baty, Jared Young, and Tyrone Taylor — which will almost certainly mean more opportunities for Mark Vientos at first and DH — his spot on the roster goes to Ronny Mauricio. It would be great to see delayed-launch opportunities be the key to Ronny establishing himself in the bigs, at it seemingly has been for Baty and Vientos, but right now, his role will seemingly be backing up at second, third, and short — and the guys there haven't been yielding any innings to anybody, so if this calf injury of Juan's is as quick to heal as we all hope it is, Ronny will likely have to make the most of very few opportunities. Give 'em Hell, Ronny!

Oh, and Kranepool/Blyleven. Bert only had a short stint in the National League at the tail end of Kranepool's career, and he was really good at the time. But he was also particularly prone to the homer for a Hall-of-Fame pitcher.
-
I was thinking Krane/Seaver earlier, but I figured Milner was gone to the Pirates before Seaver was gone to the Reds, but no, Milner was a Met 'til the end of 1977. Good guess!

They didn't isolate the runner on third, but the idea may have been a delayed double steal. Clearly, Arraez was distracted by Tayor, who may have had room for a big lead with an opposite field hitter (Torrens) at the plate. I'm guessing Taylor made a fake break, and stole the out from Arraez. But yeah, with Robert ending the Mets' ridiculously long streak of no would-be stealers thrown out by catchers, and him being dead to rights, he may be in that Jay Payton/Juan Lagares category of guys fast enough to play center well, but not quick enough to steal bases particularly effectively. -

A cool thing about this series is seemingly everybody contributed. The only guy who they seemed to be carrying was LIndor for the last two games, but he got his licks in too in the first half of the series.
