  1. And after Claudelle we have...
  2. Am I naming the next guy, or is Edgy Trebeking the thread? Oh, no. You go. Great leadoff homer.
  3. Well, I'm sure some do. I have trouble believing that number, when applied to Schilling, add up to the difference between him and Jack Morris.
  4. Vic Sage wrote: - TUFF TURF: Really? How so? I never saw it, but nothing in the description would lead one to guess cycling is critical to either its plot, imagery or themes; I can't imagine what you're waiting for. You could die tomorrow.
  5. I name a player, you tell me a fact about him --- a fact that probably isn't true, but you'd like to be true. Brian McRae? Appeared in Conan the Conqueror while still a teenager. Macky Sasser? Delivered Reese Witherspoon's baby in an elevator. David Cone? Makes the law with his bare hands. Once drank Daniel Day-Lewis' milkshake just for shits and giggles. Extra points for walking the line between plausible and awesome. Tell me a bunch of crap about Bill Almon.
  6. Transplanted subsequent posts onto the 2013 thread. That's 24.6 points behind Jack Morris. What is wrong with folks? Could it be they think he's an arrogant, unlikeable, self-promoting two-faced prick about whom virtually no ex-teammate has a good word to say, and who duped Rhode Island into funding his business to the tune of $75 million and cut and ran once things got tough? Someone who they might like to see answering questions about why he didn't get in? Just a guess. Could be, but do you really think this is the case? I doubt more than a handful of voters put any thought in this direction.
  7. I accidentally gobbled up last year's thread.
  8. Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985) ET, The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) Tuff Turf (1985) Bicycle Dreams (2009)
  9. Your sarcasm suggests you miss the point.

Sure, but the overall size of the contract he was able to get was artificially capped so, even if the guaranteed pct is fairly large, the total package is about half of what a player of his draft status would have received just a few years earlier. But even more important is that he's locked into that deal for, what?, three years?, four? five? and then a year or two beyond that because his team will simply "franchise" him to keep him from negotiating a true open market deal until sometime around the end of the decade ... assuming he lasts that long. Yeah, pretty screwed.
  12. Well, certainly not bad. But we could totally use an MLBS thread, if you'd like to start one..
  13. That's more of a MLBS post than a MPCS post, no?
  14. Looks like Griff was able to get a big chunk of his salary locked into his signing bonus.
  15. I'm more concerned with his rights, and with the rookie salary cap and the difficulty in securing a guarantee in a contract, there's a real possibility that Griffin just got incredibly screwed.

Frayed Knot wrote: Just a thought about kickball in wake of the success and turn-around seasons of top draft picks Robert Griffin & Andrew Luck -- Yeah, even though both of them lost their very first playoff chance this weekend, they were still in large part responsible for turning teams that won a combined 6 games last season to 20 this year. My question is that since the MWWF (mediots who worship football) were so unanimously in favor of a rookie salary cap based on the idea that not all of them reach their (supposed) potential, we should be hearing from them any minute now about how these two are underpaid and should be given new deals now that they clearly met and surpassed expectations. And now Griffin's career is at risk.
  17. Watson, after his brief Mets career, played in Japan for Bobby Valentine. Amado Samuel, I know nothing about. Tell me a thing.
  18. Or you could tack a 2014 option on with the offer. But this thread was started to address a present need.
  19. Well, because looking at him missing the first half the season, and then maybe another month to get up to speed, we're looking at a one-year contract that could possibly land two months. Two months of a player whose surgery and recovery may or may not be successful. It's hard to figure out what the right price is for that.
  20. I don't know what the radar is. If he does well, he'll play. If he doesn't, he won't. Let's not rush to condemn.
  21. The last time you claimed he already was 27. That depends on what "soon" means.
  22. I don't think what the team has there right now is all that bad. Although I certainly think Fores (or Havens) could take the spot from Murphy in the near future, I think Murphy could make a fight of it yet.
  23. Second Spitter, does that correctly characterize your statement?
  24. I wonder if we wouldn't have to be a little more professional in order to get the gravity of publishers sending us pre-release copies, hoping they can stamp that DB Prize stamp on on the book in time for it's second shipping. We might have to appoint a jury --- disqualifying anybody who's met Greg from voting for his book, shit like that. But I'm thinking beyond prize awarding --- though we're already there with the Schaefers. I'm thinking annual meeting, a semi-annual research journal, and stuff like that.
  25. Sounds great. It really should be called Choking Up, though. I was thinking just this morning, as I saw Team of Rivals on my coffee table with a "Lincoln Prize" stamp on it, that we should morph into the Crane Pool Mets Research Society, and award a Dana Brand Prize each year for outstanding Mets publication.
