The odd freaky pitcher gets it too. Isringhausen is the best example in Metdom, but David Cone and Ron Darling also passed through. On either side of the ball, donning it can be seen as a statement of intent to dominate. You can't hide in 44. The most representative 44s for the Mets in recent years have been AAAAs --- Ambitous Athletic African American outfielders: Ryan Thompson, Jay Payton, Mike Cameron, Lastings Milledge. Jason Bay was clearly disappointing (to say the least) but the dumbest 44 assignments in recent years have to be Jay Bell and Tim Redding. Tony Armas at least was the son of a AAAA, and even Eddie Kunz at least had a few ounces of Hollywood in his sideburns. Bell and Redding darkened the uniform and were absolute 44 pretenders from day one.

Girardi fired during the season. Terry plays out his contract, is offered another un-specified job in the organization at the end of the year, says he'll think about it, goes off somewhere to meditate, but nothing comes of it. (Similar to the soft landings of Omar Minaya and Howard Johnson.)
