  1. I think we start at 941. Please correct me if'n' I'm wrong. Welcome to the great struggle. Met 941: John Buck, blowing the mayor's mind: Met 942: Collin Cowgill, follows through on his seventh-inning grand slam: Met 943: Marlon Byrd, greeted by his captain after beginning his career with an RBI single: Met 944: Brandon Lyon poses for the new penny: Met 945: Scott Atchison discusses what to expect during the third trimester: Met 946: Scott Rice finishes the game with a perfect inning, his first big-league appearance after 13 seasons and 480 games in the minors:
  2. Ike Davis, on the other hand...

  4. Any progress on finding a partner for Matt Harvey?

Or about two weeks younger than Ike Davis, with about one-fourth the career WAR (as the sabermetric community might say). ...Cameron Maybin (26 on Thursday) Now 450 games into his career, a career in which he's consistently hit like a bench player. Jedd Gyorko (24) A consistent minor-league hitter, in western leagues where that's not purchased at so dear a price. He was Baseball America's 98th best prospect before 2012 and their 71st best this preseason, behind three Met prospects. So yeah, I guess, they could be a near future contender. So could a lot of teams. But you sure do a lazy man's job making the case. And that's the problem with this. It's just so lazy. They're gradually turning from a sports magazine that also does swimwear to a swimwear magazine that also does sports. (And that Brian Cole story gives me little hope that I'm wrong.) The sad part is that one of the things that they're out there trying to get a handle on is the fantasy sports culture --- publishing like three or four fantasy guides a year for football alone. This ignorance is unforgivable to the "sabermetric community" and presumably useless to the fantasizers.
  6. You can find the offseason thread here. When it's archived, it will be found among threads started in October 2012.
  7. Fits the mausoleic theme of the architecture well.
  8. Wow, it's like a 1980s skateboard video. Is it available on betamax?
  9. btw, I could've sworn Cowgill's grand slam was a triple. I thought it hit the bottom of the wall and was really confused especially since both the LF and Collin ran like it was in play. Yeah, outfield walls that sit only a few inches in front of a structural wall behind it create too much confusion. Proposals: 1) Pull outfield wall forward by 24 inches, allowing outfielders to make pullback plays. 2) Coat structural wall behind with a raised layer of tin, allowing for a definitive clank when the ball hits off of it. Great to have a lundy sighting.

  12. Washington hangs on at home to win 2-0 on seven shutout innings from Strassie and two kabooms from Harpoon. Turning point of the game: Trailing by two runs in the seventh, Miami threatened after Stanton's double and Polanco's infield single. With runners on the corners, Rob Brantly lined out to Harper in short left. Stanton tagged and took a few steps towards the plate before slamming on the brakes as Harper made a strong throw to the plate. Polanco, meanwhile, got caught in a rundown between first and second. Stanton raced home, but was thrown out at the plate on a 7-2-3-4-2 double play. Ouch. No triple happ.
  13. Agreed on Bad News Bears. Number one with bullet, as my sig line might suggest. I don't and wouldn't put The Natural on top, but of course it's less authentically natural. It's presented as mythology. Even the names --- Red, Bump, and Pops --- are archetypal.
  14. I didn't want to say, but... .

  16. Rice looking at a heckuva debut.
  17. You put that guy in the bullpen, you just know Betty Spaghetti will be taking a pregnancy leave shortly after.
  18. Scott Rice debuting in the big leagues.
  19. This game needs some hot, sexy Anthony Recker action.
  20. Got a Dale Thayer sighting. Wow.
  21. Roxxx.
  22. Yeah, if Crash is fictional enough, despite stealing his name from a real dude, then surely there's a place on the bench for Moonlight Graham.
