  2. Anthony Recker and future Missus, Kelly Shepardson. Somebody likes those soft light engagement shots.
  3. Sometimes, I hear the term "Grapefruit League" and it sounds like a slur of some kind.
  4. Farmer Ted wrote: Military-inspired gear. Yellow Ribbons. Green ribbons. Red ribbons. Ribbons on top of ribbons. Black Patches. Yellow wristbands. Powder blue bats. Pink shoelaces. I'm not down with all of this. Where's your flag, you commie freak?
  5. Yeah, it has to be said that part of what made McCarver great at telling the story is that he had a great story to tell.
  6. He could certainly do both a local and a national job. McCarver did often enough.
  7. Yup. Looking back, I see Baseball America had him fourth in 2000. 1. Alex Escobar, OF 2. Pat Strange, RHP 3. Grant Roberts, RHP 4. Brian Cole, OF 5. Enrique Cruz, SS 6. Lesli Brea, RHP 7. Jorge Toca, 1B/OF 8. Jason Tyner, OF 9. Eric Cammack, RHP 10. Dicky Gonzalez, RHP At the wrongful death suit, folks --- including former Mets executives --- swore up and down that he was a rare and special talent that would have earned a heckuva lot of money. If that's true, he'd've been the only one on that list to do so.
  8. I expected more of a wake for Elvin.
  9. The guy walked 20 guys in 21 innings, too reminiscent of the hard-throwing guy scouts watched for too many years in the minors waiting for him to put it all together. I wish that number was more anomolous, but I think they have reason to believe he'll never have enough control to be effective.
  10. Elvin Ramirez, who didn't look much like an elf at all, to my eyes, until recently qualified both for the "All-Time, All-Mets Team" and the "Fringe Prospects for Sale" threads. Now, just 20 games into his career, he has graduated from both to the "Wish You Were Here: Continuing Careers of Ex-Mets in 2013" thread, as he has been sold to the Angels, who were no doubt reading the forum and spotted that second thread. Mrs. MD and I wish him and his fringe mustache well.
  11. Will Wright get to wear captain's bars? I love my vets, but such efforts resound more meaningfully to me when teams elect to make their statements on a team-by-team basis.
  12. Rhino. I take back everything I ever said about the gallery of Spidey-villains.
  13. I'm sure he was excellent, but... well, the consensus at the time was that he was the team's number two prospect. And the guy ahead of him was also an outfielder who ended up having only a modest career. So sure, he could've turned out to be the second coming of Kirby Puckett, but... I don't remember him being looked at as such a sure thing at the time. Still, even saying that, I enjoy the thrill of reading the hypebolic reports (better than Rickey Henderson?). I guess it lets me think we had something coming to us and we were entitled to it but somehow got screwed out of it.
  14. Sometimes I wonder how much his irritatingness was due to him getting dumber (which he certainly did), and how much was due to us getting smarter (which the baseball-loving audience surely has). And then, how much of our getting smarter do we owe to him. So yeah, I find Tim-on-FOX to be a horrible spectacle, but (1) I have to maintain a degree or charity there, and (2) I have to wonder if we have any reason to expect better in his stead, or are we gonna get some Steve Lyons sorta deal? I guess we could get Bobby Vee.
  15. I dunno. I always thought of McCarver as a symptom of FOX telecasts, not the problem. I doubt that he'll be replaced by a superior analyst. Hopefully one who is younger and less surrendered, though.
  16. Well, Wright. He's signed through the apparent end of his career. He's approaching five-and-dime status. So, hopefully the organization is putting that behind them.
  17. Yeah. Me conflate.
  18. They're not in a position where the best and only chance to get value out of them is to put them in the big leagues now. A Rule V claiming team would be.
  19. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Singleton and Brooks, at least, were traded for veteran players (both from the Expos!) who helped the Mets win a pennant. Mazzilli, too, if you take out the Expo clause. Mets can't be too blamed for Cleon Jones and Craig Swan shlubbing it over to the American League for a few pointless appearances it at the end of their careers.
  20. Hodges could work a walk.
  21. That Lagares and Puello are even on the roster serves to demonstrate how thin our outfield prospect base is at the higher level. I don't think either one would be claimed. If I'm a club rebuilding after a sour year, I'd totally make a grab at Havens, though. Maybe Germen too. Hansel is attractive but he hasn't pitched above Brooklyn.
  22. I imagine that dome will be more typically open.
  23. The report comes from Rubin. But the roster crunch itself is no news.
  24. Looking to add a buncha dudes to the roster--- the Byrds, the [crossout:26q9biim]Hefners[/crossout:26q9biim] Laffeys, las Quinanillas, and maybe an Atchison or two, the Mets are reportedly looking to trade a prospect or three, rather than expose them to waivers by removing them from the 40. Gonzalez Germen, Darin Gorski, Reese Havens, Juan Lagares, Cesar Puello, Elvin Ramirez and Hansel Robles, have your bags ready.
