  1. Cincy limped home this season, losing the last five, before falling to the Pirates on the road in the play-in game. My guess is that when they signed Votto to his big contract, they expected to pay for it with playoff money, and they haven't gotten quite as much as they bargained for. Familiar story. Was for Omar Minaya, anyhow. Maybe they'll make a run at Charlie Manuel.
  2. My main takeaway is that Fred Wilpon uses words like "Zimmo."
  3. George F. Clooney and Sandra Bullock are two astronauts cast adrift on a spacewalk like Major F. Tom. Get these guys home, Ed Harris. Going to see it now.
  4. And we have our first change.
  5. So, is it (a) graces Terry exhibited, it was perfectly shortsighted and even dumb to keep Wright running out there when everybody in the park knew his hammy was barking. or ( Terry knew his team was hanging onto the last vesrtiges of hope, so he had to run Wright out there, because saving him for tomorrow was not going to help the team if they didn't win today. ?? Whatever the answer, Wright sure kicked in the face the notion of first-year-after-signing-a-big-deal syndrome, even if the bigger money doesn't kick in until this year.
  6. How about if they get Reyes?
  7. I'm sure not going to get on board for the DH just because I think it somehow gives me a better chance to get the Tigers to give me their MVP.

Guys who've closed but never landed a big fat closers contract... who doesn't need that? Those guys are totally fungible. If the Mets don't sign 41-year-old LaTroy Hawkins, somebody else will, and it won't be for no big league minimum neither.
  9. Excellent point, which we can interpret as... tie up Murphy now? Even if you don't intend to keep him? Tie up Parnell? Vic Sage wrote: MIGUEL CABRERA - the exception to every rule. Crappy fielder, carries extra weight, gravitating toward DH, apparent substance problems. Makes $22,000,000 a year and folks would fall over themselves to pay it, and probably would if he was 35. That's a man who can hit.
  10. The funny thing is that, injuries aside, Wright had a perfectly good year. May not have dominated any one month, but he put up his best OPS+ ever.
  11. There are a lot of crazy people in this world, but it's hard to see Reyes' believing he'd get more money, if that's who you're thinking of.
  12. Who'd've guessed two years ago that Daniel Murphy would embody the word "durable"? His 188 hits leave him just outside of the top-ten hitliest Met seasons ever. 1) Lance Johnson, 1996: 227 2) José Reyes, 2008: 204 3) John Olerud, 1998: 197 4) David Wright, 2007: 196 5) José Reyes, 2006: 194 T6) José Reyes, 2007: 191 T6) Edgardo Alfonzo, 1999: 191 T6) Felix Millan, 1975: 191 9) José Reyes, 2005: 190 10) David Wright, 2008: 189 11) Daniel Murphy, 2013: 188 He's like young José Reyes, shaking off the "injury prone" label in earnest. I remember Lee Mazzilli threatening Felix Millan's team record in 1979, but didn't make it because he walked too much. That season is now tied 15th all time, as all of the team's top hit seasons are 1996 and after, save for Millan.
  13. I think what we learned the second half of this year, though, is that, while sometimes superior pitching is exciting and invigorating, sometimes it just gets you really really long ties. And the strategy of playing until somebody screws up is really really stressful. We need some three-run innings.
  14. It'll be like that again.
  15. Man, if this guy doesn't play Mad-Libs by flashlight and keep a little notebook in his pocket cataloging his comics collection, then I don't know what.
  16. Either the fence in leftfield has to come in a few feet, or the fence on top of the fence has to be pushed back a few feet. Alserson specifically stated when announcing the original reconfiguration that the pullback catch was a key feature to baseball and fences should allow for them, but the current fence while shorter, don't allow for them because the Party City Deck railing fence interferes with the glove of the reaching player, and in fact sometimes leads to home runs clanking off the iron rail and 'sploding back toward the pursuing outfielders' face. I don't know that the park is specifically hurting the team at home so much as the players are, and this year perhaps the schedule did, with the team maybe coming home flat after some weird trips, but that's not really here nor there. They could build a porch in right center just for Wright, with similar dimensions to Shea, but custom tailoring a park to suit a marquee player is really kinda a weak-o Yankees-signed-Winfield thing to do. I hate the seats wrapping around to the foul line behind first and third base, but that's not gonna change.
  17. Fantastic work. And what a fantastic finish by Hawkins. Yet the reign of Brian Stokes lives for yet another offseason.
  18. I don't know about avoiding guys with a PED history outright. You don't want to pay good money for them, but I think that's been part of Omar's strategy. Treat them like neglected assets that you can bid low on. Reports are that he'd like to get guys on 1-3 year, and ex(?)-dopers with something to prove are one way to get good players on such modest commitments. OE: something like what he said.
  19. Collin Cowgill, can you top that?
  20. I guess I'll take the Hamilton Tigercats, but nothing tomorrow, as I have work to do. I'll try and knock something out tomorrow night.

  22. That's a heckuva lot of players to share with an AL West team. I like the Ed Charles card. Had no idea that KC wore red.
  23. I found and watched a chunk of it on YouTube. No idea if it's complete.
  24. I guess we have a different idea of fun.
