  1. We met Bradley in this thread, and saw Zvon tag him with the mother of all nicknames.
  2. I don't know. The Beltran-hating Mets fans I know tend to either be ignorant of Beltran's general excellence or rationalize it away as not representative of the "big spot." Then there's some blather about "that kind of money" and "least we could expect" and "racist Omar Minaya" and I just back away slowly.
  3. What recent Dodger teams have taken away from me is the idea that a definitive part of the Dodgers has always been how... smart... they've always looked, turned out in perfectly tailored uniforms, maybe with a crease down the sleeve even. A gargantuan or mis-shapen or tattooed or hair-died or hair-customized or douchey-facial-hair guy has NEVER looked good in a Dodger uniform --- Eric Gagne and Jose Lima always looked like misplaced Diamondbacks or something --- but now they all seem to have outsized bodies and looky-me personalities. There's a place for all that, but it just seems somehow wrong wrapped up in a Dodger uniform.
  4. So, are we putting a number on this guy? Four years, and $48 million? Seems reasonable, but if Puig is any indication, they can get Abreu for that kind of cheese.

I have to say, I'm certainly not with Team Unwritten Rules on this one. It seems to me describing the action is one thing. Going on the radio like you're Jimmy the Greek and predicting failure is another. I fully understand a fuck-that-guy vibe in the clubhouse. They're trying to do get something done.

  7. Greatest choker of all time.
  8. Yeah, everybody has seen that Choo is an intriguing investment but comes with few guarantees. But that "spend like it's 1998," line... yeesh. Set the team up to disappoint, whydon'tcha?
  9. I'm wondering someday if Beltran will have become the greatest post-season player ever, and it will be statistically demonstrable to establish, if it isn't true already.
  10. Speaking of beanballs, Arizona has apparently fired pitching coach Charles Nagy because his pitchers didn't throw at opposing batters enough.
  11. That's what keeps me coming back, right there.
  12. I don't know. I can kind of understand their feelings. Deadspin says this is another case of the Fun Police. But I think it's the opposite. Instead of going along to get along and play blandly nice for the league, the team stood together and made a statement, even if it caused their lords and masters some embarrassment. The Mets could do well to take a lesson from them when it comes to the hatzz. I myself would have probably gone along to get along, but I understand a merry band of brothers under duress thinking that if he wants to be treated as an honorary teammate, he should act like it.
  13. GAH! I broke my own thread!
  14. That upside may have not have gotten unpacked yet. Season opens with a rollicking 6-5 win over Salt River, as the Scorps rally for three runs in the top of the ninth to go ahead. That rally ended as Cory Vaughn struck out with a runner on second. Vaughn had a dreadful game, going 0-5 with two whiffs. Coming on to nail the game down in the bottom of the ninth, however, was Cory Satterwhite. I'll be danged if he didn't get them one-two-three.
  15. I don't know about you, but I work hard and when I'm done, I like to have fun! Lotsa fun! Hi, I'm Jose Lima, and at my Club Caribe, that's what YOU'RE gonna have! The best DJs, the prettiest staff, dollar rail shots, and ladies drink free 'til eleven. Come for our special alumni specials on Thrusday. South Florida this Thursday. And Talahassee State is next week. Go Gators, or Noles, or whoever. Good times for everybody, at Jose's! You know who used to have a good time at Jose's? Mike Bordick! What's he up to now?
  16. Oh, wait, I was supposed to do Lima. Shit. I suck.
  17. When McConnell Liebovitz had a chance to bring in trial lawyer Keith Hernandez to their team of attorneys, they knew they had to strike. They not only made him a full partner; but they created the position of head of litigation for him; looked the other way at rumors of cocaine abuse; renamed the firm McConnell Liebovitz Hernandez; and allowed him to work four months of the year out of the Florida offices to keep taxes on his salaries and commission down. McConnell Liebovitz only cared about two things --- that Hernandez had by far the most impressive portfolio of clients among all the candidates they spoke with, and that he got those clients wins. "If a settlement doesn't feel like an opponent is surrendering," the Civil War buff said, "then we're going to trial. And if we go to trial, we're going to win."
  18. It's not a question of keeping, though. Not adding a guy to your 40-man roster shouldn't be understood as discarding a player, or expressing a disinterest in keeping him.
  19. Maybe not Maron. I mean, you get to keep two catchers on your roster. I doubt anybody is going to be too into using one of those slots to carry a guy all season who went .235 / .327 / .295 // .622 in the Florida State League last year.
  20. What I think of the AFL as being for: Guys (particularly pitchers) who missed most of the season, but finished healthy, so need to get more reps in during the fall to keep from falling behind. Guys (like Satterwhite in the park) who have already fallen behind, and so need reps to catch up. Guys who aren't considered prospects, but had an impressive year, as a chance to see if they're for real against big-league bound talent. Guys who are considered prospects, but had a crap year, as a chance to redeem a lost season and finish on a positive. I pretty much place it in that order. The last one is rare enough, because sometimes, if a guy has a bad year, you want to leave it alone until next season, because it allows you to keep him off the roster without worrying about him being plucked away in the Rule V.
  21. He played for two of the great dynasties of his lifetime. He was on five world champs which is about five more than most players get to be a part of, so he could not have had a more professionally rewarding career. What he's going for is the love and adulation of everybody. He's a romantic celebrity in a mid-century woman's magazine talking about what he looks for in a woman --- or a Tiger Beat teen idol talking about his ideal girlfriend --- vaguely describing a woman/girl not all that different from the reader. Swoon!
  22. Autumnal Mets begin play for Scottsdale tonight, joining prospects from the Braves, Giants, Pirates, and Yankees. Mets suiting up for the Scorpions include: [list:1enrwn74][*:1enrwn74]Jeurys Familia, sp, rp,[/*:m:1enrwn74] [*:1enrwn74]Chasen Bradford, rp[/*:m:1enrwn74] [*:1enrwn74]Hansel Robles, sp [/*:m:1enrwn74] [*:1enrwn74]Cody Satterwhite, rp[/*:m:1enrwn74] [*:1enrwn74]Cam Maron, c[/*:m:1enrwn74] [*:1enrwn74]Aderlin Rodriguez, 3b, 1b[/*:m:1enrwn74] [*:1enrwn74]Cory Vaughn, corner of[/*:m:1enrwn74][/list:u:1enrwn74] I could tell you something about most all of these guys, but until a minute or two ago, I'd never heard the name Cory Satterwhite. Debuted with the Tigers in 2008, missed the 2010 season, presumably with a shoulder injury. Released following 2011. No record of him playing in 2012. Played indy ball in at the start of this season and dominated. He was purchased from Sioux City and joined the Met system and pitched effectively for St. Lucie at 26 years old. Second round pick. To read the internets, some folks think the Tigers go a little too crazy with drafting relievers.
  23. Juan Urbina --- there's a much lauded prospect, but one who hasn't done much of anything yet, and hasn't advanced beyond Brooklyn. Suddenly, he's been around long enough to be Rule V eligible. Do the Mets look to protect him? OE: Matz too!
  24. Neil deGrasse Tyson ? @neiltyson Mysteries of #Gravity: Satellite communications were disrupted at 230 mi up, but communications satellites orbit 100x higher. There you go. I ain't so dumble dumb.
  25. G-Fafif wrote: Casey (who had a thing for catchers, whether they were his man Mr. Berra or the first pick in a different kind of draft, Hobie Landrith) did like him some Chilcott after the fact, but nothing contemporary indicates he did or didn't want Jackson. Some nice American Legion ball action in that clipping too.
