  1. Deadspin Article"]What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I'll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I've been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla (sic) warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo. Today 4:57pm
  2. Grantland tells the oral history of the 1989 World Series. Mostly it's a story of the day of the quake and the time following. Good footage and quotes from many of the principle and peripheral characters. You got your Sandy Alderson. You want Tim McCarver, you got him. Mackey Shillstone? No joke, we've got Mackey Shillstone quotes. Unfortunately no Rickey Henderson. But seriously... Mackey Shillstone! http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9859539/view/full/the-1989-world-series-earthquake-oral-history And that's just the Met figures. Aside from ballplayers, you've got journalists, family members, fans from the upper and lower decks, Dan Quayle, Ted Koppel, Larry F. Gatlin. Tim McCarver and Gatlin's brother both claimed to have had ominous cases of nausea that they imply may have predicted the quake. Willie Mays, says a third-hand source (Thirty-Something's Timothy Busfield!), had a premonition brought on by the weather. Nice intermediate side story is the A's retreating to their Arizona Spring Training complex to work out and play intrasquad games, and everybody, it turns out, HATES... not Canseco, not Rickey, but Eckersley. Eck ends up plunking Jose during an intrasquad game in the middle of the World Series and everybody takes Canseco's side. A weird thing you see in the middle part of this video that's straight out of an Irwin Allen disaster movie is the players' first instinct is to use their field privileges to get their wives (and kids, I think, in some cases) down on the field to give them the meaningful but hardly foolproof protection against the building going down on them. The wives, expecting to get the cameras turned on them in the stands when their hubs come to bat, are glammed out like they've likely never been in their lives, looking like they're posing for the cover of Vogue, but in the midst of a disaster rather than a World Series game. It's surreal. jjShDPY2nBs Fuck this earthquake boochit. This kid came to see a ballgame.
  3. Just checked out Old Hoss Radbourn's twitter performance from last night. HoF stuff.
  4. I love how the photo collage is laid out to look like Terry and Sandy are holding a joint press conference about this poor guy. Hang in there, Aryn. It totally gets better.
  5. Does Germany even have scorpions?
  6. Tim Marchman wrote: It's almost certainly just pine tar, which pitchers use on cold, dry nights because the ball is hard and slick, in part because they don't want it to slip out of their hand and hit someone in the head. Teams generally don't gripe about this because there's a mutual understanding that it's in everyone's interests for pitchers to able to grip the ball properly. Why haven't the St. Louis Cardinals taught this young pitcher how the game is played? Isn't their some kind of system, or way, they could implement? Tim Marchman, makes the "there"/"their" error.
  7. "We scout these kids early. There's a special type we're looking for. Rush tee-shirts. Aloofness. Don't wear their jackets in the winter. That sort of kid. Champions."
  8. My takeaway from that photo is that, for a man of color, Cory Vaughn has a really white foot.
  9. Yeah, Twitter's a drug to the attention starved. Daily News has him threatening Turner's girlfriend, threatening to blow up or poison the clubhouse, and encouraging other fans to assault Terry and Sandy (and waving a cape for other crazies was probably his most credible threat). That his whole act and self-identity was filmed with dated TV show and Friday the 13th references just kills me.
  10. You think about Mazer. He had no great voice, no commanding presence, no background as a player to borrow authority from, no masterful cadence or gimmicky trademark calls. He would do the Jets pre-season games on Channel 5/WNEW, and you knew that this certainly wasn't a network dude, as nothing about him was trying to sell you on the exCITEment of the eVENT! All he had going for him was his authority. Some of it was intellectual, some of it was moral, and of course, by the time most of us got to hear him, a big chunk of it was experiential. But with the number of broadcast jobs available multiplied several times over these days it's hard to imagine the likes of a young Mazer being let anywhere near a microphone. If he did make it onto the air, he'd likely never make it out of Buffalo. But Colin Cowherd can be heard in virtually every market. And his imitators are everywhere. (And I mean everywhere --- behind you at the supermarket, driving your cab, getting drunk on the next blanket over at the beach... .)
  11. There are, quite simply, two things in this world that are Amazin' --- Casey Stengel's Mets and Bill Mazer. The adjective has no other applications that I can see.
  12. Well, it'd take a helluva column to get me to watch the Super Bowl these days. Gyah! I imagine they ain't missing my money.
  13. That shot of young Bill (from his Buffalo days) reminds me a little of Chris Elliot.
  14. Yeah, he called me a cheat, but he's a legend and I'm not. Bill Mazer signs off from a 92-year-long broadcast. I'd say goodbye by invoking a signature line of his, but he was never so cheap as to pimp out his act.
  15. The Quick Steps always seem to get shut out. It'd be nice if they land Saltalamacchia.
  16. If this is him, it would seem the guy likes seventies and eighties TV: https://twitter.com/danXtanna
  17. http://www.advancedbackgroundchecks.com/d/aryn-leroux/1236977764 One of his e-mail addresses was piazza@fan.com. Maybe he's our erstwhile wrestling fan. Sounds more like the piazza4prez, the poor old MOFo poster that would threaten to use his beloved fully loaded Sivlerado to run over posters who disagreed with him, before having his self image surgically destroyed by marathon. That guy lived in upstate NY, though. This poor fellow is a Nutmegger.
  18. metsguyinmichigan wrote: I know Phil Regan was a pitching coach before managing the Orioles. Good one. I checked him out though, and he jumped from pitching coach with the Indians to managing the Orioles. He made a tough jump earlier in his career, going from the college ranks to the pro ranks. When go the college track in baseball, you usually trade upward mobility for career stability.
  19. Yeah, that's more than I got. Looks like both Lachemann and Miller jumped teams to get the big chair. Miller was the second of Earl Weaver's pitching coaches to become a manager, after George Bamberger. Bud Black also had to jump teams.
  20. Can you name the last guy to get promoted from pitching coach to manager without jumping teams? I can't. Marcel Lachemann? Ray Miller?
  21. I don't see three years or front half as "bordering on longest," but Mike Scoscia has been with the Angels since the end of the last century.
  22. Social media is definitely a job for the pro-active, not the re-active.
  23. Oh, and Terry Collins is now MLB's oldest manager.
  24. You tell me Price + Reds + Pitching + Lefthanded and I get this guy: Had that David Cone thing going --- tough dude with a boyish all-American face. I also associate him with those big letters on the back of the Reds uniforms. Always good to see pitchers get the big chair. Agreed about the Reds talent, and it's not like the Tigers, where their big bats force them to trade off defense. Votto and Bruce are defensive assets. A lot of meh seasons this year from the supporting cast though. Mesaraco, Frazier, Cozart, and Phillips (despite 100 RBI) took turns slumping all year. That's talent!
  25. The Rangers gain a new coach for their bench, and his name is Tim Bogar. Wash was a Mets minor league coach when Bogar was coming up.
