  1. We all know that there's no indication that Alderson has looked at this guy at all, right? We know that this is only here because I posted in response to a late night weekend report in which Rubin quotes a neutral party saying this guy might be somebody the Mets would be interested in, right?
  2. Well, all Casey Stengel evocations aside, I'm convinced.
  3. Marcia Gay Harden is a wronged wife who ends up interrupting the suicide of her husband's young paramour. Not letting on who she is, the two become best buds, and end up on stage together in King Lear. Seriously. A worthy entry in the film festival I hope to someday present, exclusively featuring films featuring bad theater. Noises Off, A Bleak Midwinter, The Goodbye Girl, The Dresser, To Be or Not to Be, An Awfully Big Adventure... that sort of thing. 4. I think it Aoki is a solid player, and the team could do worse. I think the term "dumpster diving" has little to recommend it.
  5. "I would say that David Wright is too good for the Mets, but then I heard him sing." --- Mrs. Edgy
  6. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: batmagadanleadoff wrote: I wonder if David Wright is secretly regretting signing with the Mets last year before ever testing the free agent market. Just one year after his signing and already, it appear that he left a lot of dough on the table to play for the 'Pons. Plus, he would've been the cream of this year's FA crop. Plus, the richest team in American sports could use a third baseman, especially one that's still considered a star. Plus, the odds that the Mets'll contend before Wright starts to decline are about 12% lower than they were this time, last year. He should sue the Mets. Total buzzkill on the wedding planning, though. Marry, honeymoon, then sue.
  7. Can somebody sum up the anti-Cruz argument? I was thinking he was a proceed-caution-guy, not a not-a-great-idea-at-all guy. Is it just about holding off whilst more attractive options remain?
  8. SteveJRogers wrote: Sorry, man, but I never promised you a rose garden. There are plenty of big names to discuss. Dacker's name came up in a story. I don't know if the notion is to potentially trade for him or to hope for him to clear waivers and grab him. And then the issue is whether he's worth exposing, say, Juan Centeno. Considering the Mets don't have a chance in hell to be in the big name discussions and probably won't be for the rest of the decade, what else is there to do besides point out how a team that should be a perennial jewel of the league is reduced to a perennial dumpster diving joke every offseason. Maybe painting, I think. Music. Juggling. Dog training. The competition to see who can quit fastest seems to have elevated to seeing who can quit the biggest. SteveJRogers wrote: Take it easy Bucket. I wasn't saying the Mets should be signing everyone in sight. But there is a difference between reports saying the Mets are in play for the various "big ticket" items each year, and early winter reports for dumpster diving transactions. The latter of which should be reglated to "in other news" sections of articles, not the main focus of the "plan" or "direction" of the season. We are talking about players that you should be reminded of how they were obtained, not considered the biggest acquisitions of the off season. There's almost nothing here that isn't nonsense. Come on, Steve. Try harder.

  10. I imagine you've seen one or two.
  11. Well, the DFA wire isn't where you run into a lot of household names. The guy's got 13 uninspiring career games to his name, but... well, four were against the Mets last August, where he had the grace to go 1-8 against them, as the Mets took two of four in the midst of that brutal road trip where they finished by playing three games in three days in three cities in three time zones.
  12. Righthanded hitting leftfielder that had an inauspicious debut with the Pads, that's who. He just got DFA'd and Rubin speculates that the Mets are sniffing. High walk rate, and like Alan Dykstra, was a high draft pick with the Pads back in Alderson's day. Plus, his name is Jaff. (According to Wikipedia: "Decker's first name is pronounced 'Jeff'. He was named in honor of his uncle, who died in military service. Decker's grandfather intended to name his son 'Jeff', but the hospital nurse recorded it as 'Jaff', and the spelling was passed on to his nephew.") Also a former Arizona state high school baller of the year. Chunky monkey, too. Reminds me of the fat obnoxious prospect from Trouble with the Curve.
  13. Sandra Bullock is a cool, smart, and by-the-book FBI agent. Melissa McCarthy is a crude, foul, loose-cannon Boston detective. Can these two mismatched cops find a way to work together on catching the bad guys without killing each other? If that doesn't sound eighties enough for you, did I mention there's a dancing/drinking/bonding montage in the middle? Because there is! Oh, you've seen this film before, but this time they're women! And Melissa McCarthy's... thing... is still relatively fresh, so the tired excuse for a vehicle may offer you a laugh or two. It just may.
  14. Anthony Hopkins is the title character, an Australian consultant to Australian companies with waning profits, called in to help them make the hard calls to turn around their business. His lifeless marriage (and isn't Anthony Hopkins the bard of domestic sterility?) provides an icy contrast to the communal warmth at his new assignment a --- woefully inefficient moccasin factory, filled with affable eccentrics, overseen by a kindly paternal figure of an owner, keeping the place alive long after its time has past. The film is called Spotswood in its native Austrailia. The plot is similar to, and probably inspired, the later Kinky Boots. Come for glimpses of young Russell Crowe and Toni Collette. Sty to find out why and how this film became a favorite of Rupert Murdoch. [fimg=200]http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51JWVXJCBNL.jpg[/fimg]

Mex17 wrote: As far as trades changing the tone (or "perception"), I would direct you to the past acquisitions of Messrs Hernandez, Carter, and Piazza (and take one guess who was opposed behind the scenes on that last one. . .and who insisted upon it and pushed it through). I'm guessing Steve J. Rogers on the first. holy chicken on the second.
  16. In Harvey's defense, he was really there to talk about Qualcomm.
  17. It's troubling, is it not?
  18. Yeah, the angry, revolted, mass of potential paying customers who currently aren't paying will be the first to be affronted by sexy moves disguised as good ones.
  19. That's a sobering home/road split.

[fimg=333]http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3687/10997461183_78df5889ed_o.jpg[/fimg] Perhaps indeed, but a lot of those other guys did better after 29. Agee was starting to put on the weight and I wouldn't be surprised to read he was in the onset stages of diabetes.
  21. I was gonna say Fawcett.
  22. Well, they're set on outfield defense. Not a lot of big league starts on their roster beyond Niese and Gee. Wheeler has 17. Torres has 15. Mejia has 11. A little more than a season's worth among them. No room left on their roster, which suggests to me that their next transacton looks like a trade. I may be overthinking that.
