  1. That eggshell white batting helmet is something.
  2. Do calls need scratching? This isn't one of them nufangled smartphones I've been reading about, is it?
  3. I don't think Alderson has a "We're just going to fill holes" mantra.
  4. They're going to do something. Maybe not enough for many. And maybe it's impossible to do enough for some. But they're going to do something. And nobody's going to be shocked.
  5. A high school athlete being followed by LaTroy Hawkins. Goes by the name of Patrick Mahomes.
  6. G-Fafif wrote: You know, it's kind of impressive that he Expos were only down 7-1 considering they were playing with only five players. That's a tough hand to play. Probably ought to move LaBoy over to first.
  7. > "What's this, David?" >> "Just some stuff left over from the wedding." > "Hey, what's this?" >> "Don't look at that!" > "Is this the seating chart?" >> "It's nothing! Gimme that!" > "David, why was my table called the 'Guys That Suck,' table?" >> "Well, um, you see... It's Molly! She has funny handwriting. That's the 'Guys That Sock!' table. You guys really sock the ball!" > "That was Molly's idea." >> "Yup!" > "And she decided to seat Parnell at this table full of 'sockers'?" >> "Well she's not really up on... would you look at the time?!"
  8. There's not much about payroll there.
  9. Leo was hardly the first guy to suggest that. But winning one championship in 26 seasons doesn't exactly make him the last word on the matter. Just checking now, Durocher did actually finish last one year with the 1966 Cubs. But that was 10th out of 10, when last really meant last.
  10. That's a lot of good information, but I'd like to see Martino start an article with "Shaun Marcum is, well, not charming," and go from there.
  11. Awards voting data is interesting stuff that can be sliced a lot of ways. We remember the winners but looking at who else also ran and where they finished is really useful. Did you know Mookie Wilson once won MVP support? It's true! But here's the funky part: The only year he ever appeared on a ballot, it was an AL ballot for the Blue Jays. What's more, it was 1989, the year he got traded. So somebody gave him some MVP love for a season of merely 54 games. I wish all PS awards (MotY, RotY) had 10 slots on the ballot.
  12. McReynolds, '88.
  13. (Don't You Forget About) Cleon Jones, 1969.
  14. Jesse Orosco(n Pollo), 1983.
  15. I think he's really the star. He's not as refined a hitter as some. But he's got a great all-round game and he's sure rounded off any rough edges the last two years. Funny that he lost 50 points off his slugging average from last year and lost his Gold Glove but went from third to first in MVP voting. Your team making the post-season sure makes you look good. Great too that the Pirates wrapped him up early.
  16. Len Dykstra, 1986.
  17. Ron Hunt, 1964.
  18. McCutchen is a revelation. I get the idea that he could excel at any sport --- football, basketball, tennis, table tennis, rhythm gymnastics, nok-hockey... . You know, if he transferred to cricket today, within two years he'd be the top cricketer on the planet. Baseball is lucky to have him.
  19. Tommy Davis, 1967
  20. Donn Clendenon, 1970.
  21. Justin Turner, not invited to my wedding.
  22. It would be sort of a Richie Hebner situation, bringing in a high-end platoon player and setting up the fans to resent him for not being more than he is.
  23. Boing!
  24. No, it means we shouldn't be part of the waves of entitled, attention-starved, instant-gratification demanders or otherwise endorse their work. I like Choo, somewhat. But I may not recognize him if he was sucking french fries next to me in the food court. I'm not going to pretend the Mets are putting me on an emotional roller coaster over him.
