  1. The FO hoped the story never got out the same way they're hoping the Mets'll win the pennant. I think his point was something along the line of, if the Mets were hoping this story didn't get out, he would conclude that would have explicitly compelled their players not to talk about it. While that's not automatic, it's certainly easier than winning the pennant. I myself would guess that the front office didn't think a whole lot about the potential story one way or the other.
  2. I don't know. I think it's important, from a Mets' history perspective, to get to the bottom of it. Mitchell's brief tenure is a real fissure in Mets historicity.
  3. But a game closer to first place this August morning.
  4. Yeah, I was at the Rey-O homer game and remembered a distinctly TP-less night.

Barely qualifies as corroboration, but it moves the needle a little. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Anybody remember what the back page headline was in one of the NY tabloids the day after Mitch shaved Strawberry's head during the '86 season? "BALD-BERRY"
  6. Congratulations. You rooted for a winning team tonight.
  7. Get up, Juan. Get up.
  8. Nice. Team has pulled a lot of Houdini acts tonight.
  9. Well, it's for coming in first. First among players coming off the bench.
  10. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I'm encouraged by the Mets not-losingness so far. Last year Wheeler would be out of the box in the 3rd. Sure is nice to see them out-executing someone.
  11. Because I wasn't speaking merely literally, Seor Literal.
  12. Bloaded for Daniel Murphy. I can work with that. Elevate, Daniel.
  13. Hesitant to post a standings update after a lousy series, but it's modestly heartening to find the team still in control of their fates --- just with, you know, four fewer games to control it. 14. Your time is now, Juan Lagares. Exciting to see Duda and Campbell in the same lineup.
  15. Yeah, I think seventies and indy minors, I think Miami Miracle. The story really lays out there what baseball could be, should be, and in fact was. SPOILER ALERT!! Heartbreaking that his victory --- demanding a ridiculous sum as a buyout and winning it in arbitration --- was so Pyrrhic. Great, you got paid a crazy amount to shut down your team, the only independent minor league team in baseball. But shit, you took it and indeed shut it all down. Can't ask the guy to do all the heavy lifting, but it still hurt to see.
  16. Terrence Long is not the answer I was looking for, but it IS CORRECT! I declare you Mets RotY Voting Support Champion. Congratulations. The guy I was looking for was indeed 1999 RotY runner-up Preston Wilson (Marlins). But Terrence Long pulled it off again the very next year in the AL with the Athletics. Ex-Mets at the time were both.
  17. He or she was a New York Met.
  18. Thank you for participating, but the question was to be tiebreaker for our two finalists.
  19. Premature fireworks. Moises Alou is incorrect (1 X!). I'm looking for a guy who finished second in RoY voting AS A FORMER MET.
  20. Fine with that, but I'd be happy to do the same with our two other erstwhile leftfielders too and call up dD and Brownie.
  21. Lousiest loss of the year from my perspective. Really tough to be leaning on the pitching so much that the offense completely checks out of a four-game homecoming series.
  22. Hunter Pence takes a tax writeoff for donating his car to KARS4KIDS.
  23. The Notorious W.I.G. completes our quiz. No.YearPlayerPlacePts.First Pl. Here's a tiebreaker just for those two --- name the former Met who managed to finish second in RotY voting one season during this period.
