Division gets a little weaker as Adam LaRoche jumps to the American League, leaving the Nats and bypassing the Marlins and becoming a Chicago White Stocking.

HooLeo Franco. Very much alive.

No announcement yet, I think, but leaks say the assistant batting coach slot has gone to former Yankees director of player development, which seems like an interesting and not necessarily upwardly mobile career track. Roessler had managed in Charleston for a season as seen above, but I don't see any record of a minor league career for him. I think he's served in the Expos/Nationals system also. Alderson had been holding off on announcing Wally Backman's return to Las Vegas, clearly wanting him to be the first option if anything appropriate opened up on the MLB coaching staff, but it looks like the slots are all filled.

Ceetar wrote: He's worthy. And he's also a good defender and won't lose as much value as say A-Rod, via defense, at the tail end of that contract. somewhat stationary/aging outfielders aren't as big an impediment as stationary SS or even 3B. I'll disagree here. A poor fielding shortstop has as much value as a solid fielding first baseman or left fielder --- and much more than a poor-fielding one --- and can certainly slide to another position.

I don't know. I kind of think of it as real value back on the investment. I know GMs do. Kevin Plawecki and Matt Reynolds, for instance, are the big grey geese that Alderson grabbed with the compensation pick the Mets got after losing Jose Reyes. That could really reflect well (or not) on the decision to let Reyes walk.

Yeah, I imagine the one really staying up at night is dePodesta. I guess part of what you can do is trade off some of your most vulnerable guys for players lower down in the minors, but you probably wouldn't get fair value.

I think Stanton has had considerable accomplishments, yeah. Pujols, for instance, had seven historical years to start off his career, but had only won one MVP because the award was Barry Bonds' to lose. Jimmie Foxx was an astounding player from the age of 19, but his career coincided with Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig (and Hornsby's back end too). Who knows when his first MVP would have come? Stanton may not be the best bet over 13 years (and if he's great, he has that out clause, so the Marlins really can't win), but he's a better bet than Clayton Kershaw, MVP or no.

I think a 13-year deal to anybody may be nuts, and in particular a 13-year deal to somebody who finished the season with his face smashed. But the MVP standard seems a little arbitrary. Meanwhile, I spoke too soon, or more accurately, I spoke too broadly. The drag on salary growth is more over the last five years than the last 10. Average MLB Salary, 2005-2014 2014 $3,825,266 2013 $3,632,706 2012 $3,438,241 2011 $2,219,777 2010 $3,278,359 2009 $3,260,059 2008 $3,131,041 2007 $2,926,342 2006 $1,937,004 2005 $1,825,756 I slapped this together, but "1" represents 2005 and "10" represents 2014. Data certainly demonstrates the fits-and-starts phenomenon. We get one big start and one big fit.

Hasn't been a lot of wage inflation in the last 10 years, Great Recession and all.

Pretty cool that Leach started that chain and quickly came back to the team as a free agent. Too bad the Rick Anderson line died out. That lasted about 30 years.

"Steve Phillips shows Ambler the Plan" Ambler: Hey Steve. Can I have your autograph? SP: Sure. AM: Thanks. While you're at it, can you show me the plan? SP: The plan? AM: Y'know, the plan. How you're going to execute the massive rebuilding this team needs. SP: I'm not sure we need a massive rebuilding, but... . AM: Yes you do. SP: Do not. AM: Do too. SP: Oh yeah? AM: Yeah. Like Piazza. When are you going to trade him? SP: I don't believe we will be trading Mike Piazza. AM: See? SP: See what? AM: It's not your fault, really. SP: What isn't my fault? AM: You're constrained by the cheapass owners. SP: We all work under a budget. Don't you? AM: Well... . SP: We're doing all we can to put a good team on the field. We have to keep an eye on now and on the future. AM: Why don't you dump Zeile? SP: Dump? We're not in a position to dump players, especially those we've made a large investment in and we're counting on to come around. Right now the market isn't good for Todd, and we'd need something back. This isn't a simple matter of addition by subtraction. AM: You traded all the wrong guys. SP: Heh-heh. Tell that to Ed Wade. AM: You coulda got more for Reed. SP: Like who? AM: I gotta go find my seat SP: Wait. Who? AM: I dunno. You should have thrown in LOBIN and Toad. SP: Sure. This isn't rotisserie, you know. AM: What about A-rod? Wasn't that 24-and-1 nonsense just a ruse? SP: There was some truth to it. The bottom line was we couldn't afford to sign a contract that big. AM: Ordez sucks. Play Desi every day. SP: That's a matter for Bobby to decide. AM: You should force Piazza to play first. SP: I thought you just said we should trade him? AM: I'm not spending another dime on Mets baseball until you show me the plan. SP: Then what are you doing here? AM: Uhhh... Free tickets. I won them in a radio contest. SP: And that hotdog? AM: Found it over by the trash can. SP: I see. AM: Steve? SP: Yeah? AM: Will you show me the plan? SP: No. AM: Please? SP: Sorry. You'll have to wait. If I went around showing my plan to everyone, I could lose whatever leverage I have. AM: Then I'm not spending another dime on Mets baseball. SP: We're really going to miss you.

Still have to adjust the position of the left field wall relative to the party city railing. Fair means fair for the left fielder, too, man! But I tend to agree.

That's the choo-choo coal man! That may be the best Mets rebus ever.

Brilliant! You! Brilliant!

I initially thought his name was Race Adecky. I'm certain I'm not the only one.

Foo Fighting Men, July 16

"Trying to implement that so close to the season last year was really tough." And thus, kind of an embarrassment, trying to enforce a rule when nobody was really sure what it meant. Tough part about extrapolating AFL data is that they're going to have more pitching changes in the first half of the game.

That Times article was... highly disappointing, frankly.

If Ray hadn't been dealt for Joe Torre, he'd've been my father-in-law today. Trade hit me harder than a ton of bricks. It wasn't until after the Seaver trade --- when EVERYBODY felt that way --- that I took fully to the Mets. It was like I suddenly realized, "Oh, it's supposed to devastate you." We were terrible. We'd be playing ball in the street and get bored and somebody would say, "Let's go to Ray's house and get autographs!" Then we would pull the same shit two days later as if he hadn't obliged already. Usually it was just Ms. Sadecki, but she had a ready-made pile of signed talismans to hand out.
