  4. Gwreck wrote: The money shouldn't be an issue with the Mets playing in the New York market. Winning also brings in more money. I say make the deal. A bad contract is a bad contract even if Bernard Madoff never happened. This is a contract that got the GM who negotiated it fired. It's got seven years and $129 million left on it. Or six years and $118 million. There will be other solutions presenting themselves in the interim. I certainly agree that winning can beget money just as money can beget winning. But that sure hasn't worked for the Rockies. Any team has to be wary how committed they are to that cycle, this being the anniversary of Omar's last binge/burnout and all.
  5. I don't believe for a minute that the Mets have distinctly less able doctors than the standard. It's certainly come to pass often enough that players from other teams, uncertain as to their condition, have gone out of their way to consult with Mets physicians.
  6. Wow, it's like a comedy festival!
  7. Even leaving out the rattlesnake-and-bunny story... he and his wife took some time to do some wrangling during spring training. Again... he and his wife took some time to do some wrangling during spring training.
  8. No was up 8-6 at the close of business hours yesterday. Yes now leads 11-9.
  9. I guess the equivalent would be Travis d'Arnaud, Ruben Tejada, Matt den Dekker, and Rafael Montero for Troy Tulowitzki, but a version of Troy Tulowitzki without injury questions, Coors Field questions, and not locked into a prohibitive contract. I don't know that there's a possible match out there. I generally think they are World Series contenders as is, but which cleanup hitter playing a premium defensive position do you suppose that they might back the truck up to get?
  10. Gil has two bridges. The other is in Pike County, Indiana, spanning the Pike River.
  11. December 10 kinda suxx: New York Mets traded Nolan Ryan, Leroy Stanton, Francisco Estrada and Don Rose to the California Angels for Jim Fregosi on December 10, 1971. New York Mets traded Mike Scott to the Houston Astros for Danny Heep on December 10, 1982. December 10 kinda roxx: New York Mets traded Hubie Brooks, Mike Fitzgerald, Herm Winningham and Floyd Youmans to the Montreal Expos for Gary Carter on December 10, 1984. But it's never a good day to be Hubie Brooks: New York Mets traded Hubie Brooks to the California Angels for Dave Gallagher on December 10, 1991. I think December 10 and 11 is most relevant today for the 12/10/2008 signing of Francisco Rodriguez and the 12/11/2008 trade for J.J. Putz that marks the last stand for Omar Minaya.
  12. The Cubs think they're a 200-inning pitcher away, they shoulda talked turkey with the Mets over Bartolo Colon.
  13. That's a total Brooklyn pickup line: "Your name is Madison Bumgarner? No shit, that's my name too."
  14. He could be a shortstop-playing version of Eric Young --- the leadoff hitter who bats ninth.
  15. I love Omar Vizquel too. What I love about Vizquel is that he has about as low a profile as an athlete can get while still qualifying for a published memoir that got national distribution. But despite his long career (he got into 60 games at 45 years old!), he never had a defining nickname, never had a defining clever quote, never had a defining trademarked tagline that the play-by-play guy would shout when he did something notable. So he ended up with the most forced book title in the history of sports memoirs.
  16. yeah obviously his injury is something to watch. But this is the kind of thing they oughta look at doing. Maybe they need to tweak it so that we also give up Gee and they include a guy we can start at AAA, or maybe even throw in Muffy and get a lefthanded reliever out of it too. Alex Claudio. JQnN-qZ3_aw Fangraphs sez: Claudio made his made his major-league debut at the age of 22 years and 194 days the 15th youngest player of the 167 to do that so far in 2014. Generally speaking, prospects who enter the majors with such youth are doing so because theyre either (a) regarded almost universally as top prospects or ( a LOOGY. Claudios absence from McDaniels organizational list for the Rangers suggests that he doesnt belong to the former category. And yet, even though hes a left-handed pitcher, Claudios not a traditional LOOGY, either. Rather, his best pitch or at least his most excellently strange one is a changeup that sits in the mid- to high-60s, roughly 20 mph slower than his (rather slow) fastball. The changeup, of course, is typically utilized to neutralize opposite-handed batters. It follows, then, that if Claudio has an excellent changeup, that hes also a candidate to neutralize platoon advantages. In either case, heres slow-motion footage of Claudios entirely slow changeup. Science indicates that, upon viewing it, one is able to travel backwards in time:
  17. I'm clinically trade averse. I avoid them before they happen, and get on board reluctantly after, so I don't do it. But if I've got to make a trade, this is one to take seriously. Depends on what my scouts say about his shoulder. Dude had all the tools once upon a time, but maybe the injury turned him into a utility infielder.
  18. Sure. And he may have more value simply sticking around and playing out his contract. Only way Sandy finds out is to to put a number on that likelihood and asking around to see what's being offered. Predicting the future is a fun science, but it's thankfully inexact.
  19. I'm surprised here at all the Gee votes even given his injured and rocky second half. To me, the one I'm most willing to part with has to be Colon as his lifespan here has one year left on it even if everything goes well. That doesn't mean I'd balk at trading either of the other two (or anyone else for that matter) in the right deal, but given the younger/cheaper/controllable status I'd prefer to trade Big Bartolo. I'm here. Any of these guys can blow up tomorrow. But Black Bart is seemingly most likely to turn his ankle getting out of bed tomorrow, and any run of success has a definite and rapidly encroaching sunset. Two sunsets: the first being the end of his contract and the second being his viability as a professional athlete, given his age and condition. It's a reality, even if I do joy in watching him dodge that reality as long as possible.
  20. And Jon Harper gets to write a stupid see-I-was-right! followup to his stupid column saying the Mets were wussies if they didn't sign Robertson.
  21. Niese has certainly shown more command than all of them except Colon.
  22. Why do you find him more stress-inducing than Gee or Colon? Or Wheeler, for that matter?
  23. SNY's Rob Brender reporting that he's in the room as the Mets and Rangers are getting MIGHTY CHUMMY! Last deal between the Mets and Rangers? Jeff Francoeur for Joaquin Arias.
  24. i was looking for that Bill James comment and I instead found this great article by Dave Fleming, who looks at it both ways. I must've read it before because he also calls Hal Chase the Devil. The notion is that he was particularly exceeding and destructive. I don't think it's doing the job to just say, "There are plenty of douchebags in the Hall, therefore we won't factor in his record as one."
