  1. If a film tanks, they subtly distance themselves from the role of the film in the larger continuity, as they did with Hulk. I have little doubt that Guardians was positioned in exactly that way --- to zig towards within the greater universe if it succeeded, or to zag away from if it failed. The whole deck, of course, gets re-shuffled if they successfully acquire Spider-Man or The Fantastic Four or X-Men.
  2. Rabbit.
  3. Well, I'm not advocating against Recker, just commenting on the nature of his situation. I don't believe for an instant, though, that Recker can "really" catch in a sense that "d'Arnaud" cannot. He certainly had a better defensive season but I don't see that as a reason to rush to a conclusive judgement.
  4. It's official. Johnny gets a minor league contract and a Spring Training invite. And Anthony Recker is that much closer to a non-tender hitting him in the coming weeks.
  5. That's awesome. That needs to be gif-orized. The best part is that, as the camera zooms in on his stoic face, his commander seems to have ripped all insignia off of him, but his shoulders are still recoiling against one insult after another, and you're wondering what else could be left, and you get the idea that he's being stripped down to his underwear like Johnny Monell.

  7. It's one of the our best moments from the last season. Edgewife: "Are you ready to go, yet?" Edgy MD: "One more out." She walks over to the monitor to watch with me. Gary Cohen: "Mejia needs one more pitch to finish the job here. Met fans at the edge of their seats, clinging tightly to their garden gnomes."

Then, when changing a pitcher who was getting bombed or removing a guy who just made a costly error in the field, instead of just sending a replacement out, the manager could march out there and rip the team logo insignias right off the jersey and send the player off the field in disgrace. Or maybe make the player wait out there for his substitute at which point he'd have to rip his own patches off and place them on the shoulder of his replacement in a changing of the guards type of situation. Needless to say, trades and demotions would now have their own video-worthy moments as patches, numbers, logos, etc. are removed from the fallen soldier. I think you may be onto something here. "MPs, get this sack of shit out my sight!"
  9. Why was Dixieland music so happening at the time? Did The Sting launch a Dixieland revival or was it just another part of the revival? Because "Meet the Dixie Mets" was THE version of "Meet the Mets" until like 1982.
  10. Well (1) vets' issues is one of Fred's pet causes, and (2) what gets the team in good with the league is good for the team, from management's perspective. And I guess (3) it's particularly unoriginal. Pinstripes is THE Met kit. It's original, foundational. It links every Met ever, and it says good things to your heart.
  11. Reportedly a climbing accident, but they're ordering an autopsy. Appears to be some concern it may have been a suicide.
  12. Thoughts on Inning One. [*:1grm41hb]Dont know what was a more remarkable part of the leadoff hit --- that it hit the bag or that Morgan chased it down and held Garrett to a single.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Is there anything more automatic than Millan getting the bunt sign in a bunting situation? Or that hed successfully get the bunt down?[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Always loved the huge letters the Reds wore on their backs, especially when its a multi-lettered name like BILLINGHAM or HOUSEHOLDER and the name arched like a rainbow across the upper half of the players back.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]No fastballs for Staub with a runner on.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Jones gets the hit with the RISP, but two factors I had forgotten keep Wayne at third --- the speed of the artificial turf, and Geronimo being an aggressive, shallow-playing centerfielder.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Billingham looks like Ron Hodges brother.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Reds scouted that Jones cant hit the inside curve.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Billingham hasnt given up any runs but Pedro Bourbon is warming up in the first! This man has no idea that, before the week is out, he will be eating a baseball cap.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Billingham and Seaver met earlier in the season, according to Ralph and had the fastest game of the year. One hour and 37 minutes!![/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Derrel Chaney ends the threat by starting a doubplay. Derrel Chaney![/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Jimmy the Greek endorses Edge gel. Nothing against Jimmy, but he's not the first man I'd think of as a model when I worry about my appearance.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Were Back. Look at all those studs in the Reds lineup. And they dont even have George Foster. The Reds were so loaded that they stashed him in the American Association most of that season. The Mets, on the other hand, have Jerry Grote batting sixth! On a playoff team![/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Also absent from the lineup, number 13, Davey Concepcion. What gives?! This isnt the Big Red Machine! Its merely a really great lineup that outclasses the Mets top to bottom.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Seaver got Rose on an inside slider with a little plate. He wouldnt have thrown that to a pull hitter.[/*:m:1grm41hb] [*:1grm41hb]Dan Driessen is batting third. Pretty soon hed be the best fourth outfielder/backup first baseman in the world, once Griffey and Foster become established.[/*:m:1grm41hb][/list:o:1grm41hb]
  13. Thoughts on the Pre-Game: [*:27yqlgep]Cool to see Lindsey have to pass the mic around to Ralph and Bob like three 50-year-old Beastie Boys.[/*:m:27yqlgep] [*:27yqlgep]Artificial turf in the post-season.[/*:m:27yqlgep] [*:27yqlgep]Murph is already silky smooth.[/*:m:27yqlgep] [*:27yqlgep]Billingham vs. Seaver sounds like a sad mismatch, no matter whos hitting.[/*:m:27yqlgep] [*:27yqlgep]Good job pitching Getting by Ralph. That was Ralph, right?[/*:m:27yqlgep] [*:27yqlgep]Bat Garrett leadoff! Yogi was stupid like a fox.[/*:m:27yqlgep][/list:o:27yqlgep]

  15. Deal not announced yet, but the Mets have apparently added veteran of eight big league games Johnny Monell. [fimg=400]http://sfgiantsphotos.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/monelljohnny-166.jpg[/fimg] Check it out, he bats lefty, replacing Centeno as the fringy lefty guy. (Centeno replaced Thole, who turned out to be fringy even though we didn't know it at the time.) He's the first Columbus grad to crack the show since somebody named Nick Testa pulled a Moonlight Graham and caught one inning in 1958.
  16. I was thinking of the All Last Lap Team: Guys with long and prosperous careers who had no association with the Mets but joined them for their last season or less, inexplicably crossing the finish line in a uniform that would never otherwise look familiar on them. C: Sandy Alomar, Jr. 1B: Jeff Conine 2B: Willie Randolph 3B: Jay Bell?? SS: Larry Bowa LF: Bobby Abreu CF: Richie Ashburn RF: Gary Sheffield SP: Bob Friend?? SP: Jose Lima?? RP: Mike Marshall RP: Jose Valverde??
  17. It's amazing how that collision by Rusty --- which is perhaps my earliest specific baseball memory --- is merely modest by today's standards, but in a world before wall padding ended up being disabling. Heck he probably hit support post there too.
  18. Wows, it was a home run. Surprised you could forget. Ambler was arguing the triumphalism of the Yankees' second baseman over that of the Mets, and you came back with, "The day Alfonso Soriano has a full season of .300/.400./.500 while playing Gold Glove defense, I'll sing a love song to Ambler in my underwear in Times Square."
  19. I don't know all the rules. But I know the existence of the rules. And I know the spirit of the rules. And I know that they are anti-competitive and awful for baseball and the men and boys who play it. The nonsense that they get away with in NFL and NBA is far more offensive.
  20. You know, it's like you forget that Jeurys is YOUR OWN SON!
  21. Those rules are amazing. How do fans tolerate it?
  22. I find the gray on blue gets lost in there. Like it's a primer coat that somebody didn't have time to put the the finish on.
  23. Sounds like a lot of X-factors involved in recruiting that guy.
  24. Solid orange on a kit is almost always a bad idea. In fact, turning your secondary color into your primary is almost always a bad idea.
  25. The problem with that is everything.
