  1. Yeah, baseball did itself a bad by never really defining what Rose's redemption would look like. This is partly a result of Giammatti's death, I imagine. But as long as reinstatement is an option, the terms of reinstatement should be explicit, even if Rose was never going to meet them. The issue really shouldn't be the Hall of Fame. It should be about whether he's again able to associate with baseball, hold a job, or walk on a ball field. To the extent that Hall of Fame is relevant, it should be as the last stage in his reconciliation, but the conversation usually treats it as the first.
  2. I had to read two or three times to absorb that it was a murder-suicide apparently perpetrated by the mother. How very awful. Hamilton was on the short list of potential replacements for Wayne Hagin. I caught him doing a spring MLB.com broadcast or two, and he filled the air nicely.
  3. Brooklyn opened the season this weekend by taking two out of three from the local rival Staten Island Yankees. First baseman Jeff Diehl has set the pace so far, going 35 with a home run in the two games he has appeared in. Recent draftee Vincent Siena (the new Mazzilli) is 3-10 with three walks. Starting pitchers Tyler Badamo and Michael Gibbons walked off with the wins, with Gaby Almonte taking the lone loss. The bullpen threw 12 2/3 scoreless innings over the weekend, led by Carlos Valdez and Alex Paisha, who threw 3 1/3 each. Catching and infielding for the Cyclones is Manuel Hilario, who you may remember from last year in the Gulf Coast League, his season ending after a base running collision triggered a frightening on-field seizure, and a game-ending medical airlift from the field.
  4. So much for the "We can't put Tejada at short and Flores at third because what do we do when Murphy comes back?" reasoning.
  5. Savannah looking to go out with a bang, as the Sand Gnats clinch the first half champion ship in the South Atlantic League.
  6. Frayed Knot wrote: Efforts to trade Gee have yielded nothing, so he's now officially on waivers where you gotta figure that his odds of being claimed are fairly small. So, if so, he likely winds up in Vegas pitching and waiting around for ... whatever. I'm thinking the odds of a claim are pretty large. Some team claimed Nieuwenhuis, and he was having a far worse season than Gee. Wait, that was us. We'll see.
  7. That's what I call bunting. You bunt too, Lucas.
  8. I have no problem with him having a second position to keep him in the lineup an extra ten times a year, and a fallback if another catching prospect come along. But it doesn't make a poor-hitting team better to move a guy leftward on the defensive spectrum. It replaces Dilson's offense with Plawecki's (a negative, from where I sit), and Dilson's defense with d'Arnaud's (a negative from where anybody sits).
  9. Seems like Harvey always catches the day they go for that chrome insignia thingie.
  10. Not my jury. I saw plenty of Biggio and plenty of d'Arnaud. I've seen no small sample of Plawecki also.
  11. I certainly support rooting for your organization to improve the team. But I don't think imploding is the way forward. They may be restrained, but they aren't dummies that will suddenly realize something twelve losses down the road. More likely, they'd deal themselves out after such a slide. HEY A HIT!!!!
  12. Yeah, that's perverse.
  13. It does speak to how needy for affirmation and desperate for another chance Randolph is, though.
  14. Derek Jeter = surprisingly not the worst player on that list.
  15. Biggio was a bad catcher. d'Arnaud is not.
  16. Three of the four runs driven in by the guy knocked out with a hyperextended elbow.
  17. X-rays on the e'Lbaud for d'Arnaud
  18. Zvon wrote: Sheeeeeeeee-hit. At least Pierz didn't get the cycle. I'm used to pitchers and bull pens giving back games, not infields. This has got to stop. And what Keith said tonight I disagree with. Tejeda is a better shortstop AND a better third baseman than Flores. If Murphy wasn't coming back Tuesday, maybe, but you don't start fuckin' with Flores at short now. Not if the plan is to keep him as the regular shortstop. I don't think there's anything that necessarily fucks with a guy when you put him at a different position. And it's not like Keith hasn't been arguing this on and off for several weeks.
  19. Braves prevail with well executed mediocrity over terribly executed mediocrity.
  20. Zvon wrote: I'll settle for a ball hit fair. Anywhere. There's one.
  21. Watching that curve with two strikes. Over and over. Keith would be ashamed.
  22. Will tonight be the night Terry blows?
