I'm sure we can find a game where Colon pitched against Rick Ankiel. Or possibly Ankiel against Toe-Knee Arm-Ass.

Akeel owes a thank-you call to Garret Olson, who appeared in one game in 2012 (yeah, I don't remember either) giving up four runs in 1/3 of an inning, setting the bar for worst ERA in team history at 108.00. Akeel sits second at 67.50, with a handful of seasoned position players and bad ideas behind him. New York natives and guys whose name begins with "J." Retreads, a lot of them. Most are latter day figures, for what that's worth. Highest ERAs in Met History 1) Garrett Olson (2012): 108.00 2) Akeel Morris (2015): 67.50 3) Todd Zeile (2004): 45.00 T4) Derek Bell (2000): 36.00 T4) Brett Hinchliffe (2001): 36.00 6) Tim Hamulack (2005): 23.14 7) Anthony Recker (2013): 18.00 T8) John Lannan (2014): 15.75 T8) Chan Ho Park (2007): 15.75 10) Mike Fyhrie (1996): 15.43 11) James Baldwin (2004): 15.00 T12) Dario Alvarez (2014): 13.50 T12) Dean Chance (1970): 13.50 T12) Matt Franco (1999): 13.50 T12) Eddie Kunz (2008): 13.50 T12) Dan Murray (1999): 13.50 T12) Joe Vitko (1992): 13.50 18) Joe Sambito (1985): 12.66 19) Jonathan Hurst (1994): 12.60 20) Jason Vargas (2007): 12.19 I don't know if this was Sandy's idea exclusively or somebody on the development staff championed this move, but... bad idea.

Verrett, recent experience and all, might well have been the smarter choice, once they cleared a spot by waiving Nieuwenhuis. But that might not have been in time. Anyhow, I'm pretty sure they have two (or more?) guys than move to the 60-day. Niese did fine tonight. Matz, however, did superfine this afternoon in Utah. Fine-plus-plus. PlayerIPHRERBBSOHRERASteven Matz (W, 7-4)7.04001502.11

In retrospect, maybe they should have taken advantage of the spot on the roster left by a vacating Nieuwenhuis and called up Verrett instead of Morris to begin with. Wouldn't have helped that much tonight, of course.

That's how I remember him, as the loud, barrel-chested dude that projected a big appetite and and an intimidating directness. I moved to Washington in 1992, didn't get any yearbooks or anything that might show his picture changing from year to year. Then, in 2000, I absolutely did not recognize the creature accepting the NL Championship trophy. He was lost, dotty, broken, spotted, and seemingly 100 pounds lighter, saying little more than, "All credit goes to him!" seemingly about Steve Phillips but waving toward a gaggle of braintrust guys that suggested he could have meant Bobby Valentine or Fred Wilpon. But it was very affectionate, like Steve Phillips was his personal protg and son-in-law-to-be or something. I was shocked, I figured, "My God, he must be 90!" but I checked his birthdate, and he was only about 66. I looked at pictures of Fred Wilpon from the early years, and yup, he was still recognizable, but the two Doubledays I could not reconcile. I figured then he couldn't have had more than two years left. I congratulate him on stealing 13 years from my prediction.

Well, Campy. You wouldn't've wanted the game without that. Guy doesn't seem to know if he's coming or going, and hasn't for a long time.

Mets bench emptyin'.

We're going to need 10 here. You want an insurance run.

Crap. No great affection for the guy, but his legacy is undeniable, and it would have gone a long way had the Wilpon-Katz-Wilpon regime done the big thing and put him in the Mets Hall of Fame while he was living.

Weird non-control on the change-up.

Met #997, Akeel Morris 6/17/2015. Eighth inning.

brumble

We need to do something about that guy behind home plate wearing a wedding cake on his head. He's bad luck or something.

Like I said, I dunno, and I mostly don't wanna know. I object to all of it. ALLOFIT!!

Guys, support your local lefty.

There seem to be little pellets or what looks like chemical dust kicking up off the turf when the ball hits or a running foot plants. Is it rain or something?

I guess they're college seniors with little leverage. Amazin' Avenue's conclusion with their profiles of the two guys are "Hes a sure bet to sign with the team and will probably sign cheap" and "He will definitely sign with the team."

This guy sure seems to have found a hole in Dilson's swing.

Mets have six of the first nine draftees signed. Unfortunately, the missing three are the first three. Interesting is that some of them took seriously lowball offers lowball, at least, compared to the recommended slot amount. I don't know what that all means, and I don't really want to know, as the whole system stinks, but maybe it means they're stockpiling money to go over slot with somebody who slid down based on assumptions of college commitments. Pure speculation, that.
