Joe Smith, coming off perhaps his best season last year (sub-2 ERA, half the season closing) is a big part of the Angels again this season, with 32 appearances helping to set up Huston Street. Smith is married to a news anchor.

St. Lucie got four hits, two doubles, and three RBI out of Dom Smith today, one of three St. Lucie Mets to go 4-5. Raised his batting average 10 points to .305.

Back over .500, Buds!

Herrera ends up making all three plays.

I think they're out there. Managers who make a difference. But I don't know who they are. And so we mistake big names from big winning teams as big difference makers. Francona wasn't missed when he left Philadelphia, but somehow he was gold in Boston. Either that or they were just two different teams in two different positions, which is more likely. But that's not to say Terry didn't make a difference. Hard.

Or, alternatively, go down in order.

Let's just tack on about five here.

It's hard to quantify what a big difference-maker of a manager looks like.

Ball gets through two Mets and the third one makes the play. Man, I hope the bullpen is ready to do their part.

How cool. Syndergaard's great aunt in the house. No wonder he's had concentration lapses.

Frazier might've been in there if he didn't slide like a sucker.

It's not everyday you see a guy run out of gas in the middle of an at-bat like that, but he went ahead 0-2 and his change went from devastating to un-controllable.

Insane effort by Hamilton.

Let a guy steal without looking and then not realize you just got the third out. Syndergaard is haven't some attention issues today. Keith, on the other hand, is back out on the make with his old dark mustache.

I always liked that the Reds had the biggest font on the back for the players' names. Nothing like that now. Can't even see a letter of Cueto's name. [fimg=500:4xe1ad2p]http://sports.mearsonlineauctions.com/ItemImages/000072/72149b_lg.jpeg[/fimg:4xe1ad2p]

Strange that Syndergaard didn't pick that up off the bat.

Gotta drop Granderson to the middle of the lineup, man.

1. Not yet, he hasn't been. 2. He's scheduled to debut Sunday. 3. That is during, and not after the homestand. 4. Really, Ash, we were looking for an actual date, not a window.

Double moment of silence expected tonight, for Nelson Doubleday and Darryl Hamilton.

So, who wins the pool on this one? Hoping for a Chase Utley player-manager thing. Expecting anything but.

The Scarlet Outfield: Marlon Byrd is in left. You know about him. Still got upper body strength, still got bat speed, still got a PED suspension in his past, still moves well for a fat guy. It's just, you know, two years further down the road. That said, the guy is a red-hot Red, going .259 / .347 / .565 // .912 over his last 30 games. That's enough to get him to a workable .748 OPS after a slow start, despite a .225 batting average. Try not to face him with men on base and pitch him away. Centerfield is Billy Hamilton. You know about him. Blazing base-stealing speed, lousy OBP, and a crooked smile. If you can keep your breaking pitches around the plate, then you'll probably handle him. Rightfield is Jay Bruce. Lefthanded power and strong throwing arm make him a classic rightfielder. He gets his share of walks and outside of being a strong defensive outfielder is their Lucas Duda, right down to the awkward grin. He runs hot and cold. He's unfortunately hot.

I'm not sure if we're talking about Niese or Colon here.

I bet they play "Take the Money and Run" and the Wilpons get all pissy about it. Here's a story 'bout Jos Reyes 'n' Dae-Sung Koo Dae-Sung dug in and-and Randy Johnson threw It was a tough time for his batting debut He slugged the first pitch and he just fuckin' flew Randy Johnson, a former D-Back and Astro Signed with the Yankees to reveal his inner asshole Jos bunted, because of Willie's manifesto Dae-Sung scored the funniest run Dae-Sung scored the funniest run! Dae-Sung scored the funniest run! Koo! Koo-Koo! Dae-Sung scored the funniest run! Dae-Sung scored the funniest run! Miguel Cairo seemed to have come here to hex us I thought he still slept with his... Yankee exes But he batted next and hit one halfway to Texas I laughed so hard that I hurt my solar plexus But Dae-Sung scored the funniest run! Dae-Sung scored the funniest run! Koo! Koo-Koo! Dae-Sung scored the funniest run! Dae-Sung scored the funniest run!

Rehab: Strategy: Just stay in St. Lucie and we'll assign you to whichever team is home at the moment. Nothing official on the Matz promotion. I guess the idea is to get him to sit around the clubhouse and shag flies in the outfield to acclimate him for a few days, without actually activating him. But it also means sharing the locker room with the guy whose job your taking. The guys at the back end of the bullpen (Logan Verrett in particular) must be totally giving him the stink eye.
