  2. Three perfect ... for Nicasio. I know everybody's down on Niese, but Hawk is twice the pitcher Nicasio is.
  3. Nice to see good hard contact from Flores, but ... finding leather.
  4. Cabrera caught watching the ball when he needs to be a-runnin'.
  5. That's a start. Or a startish thing.
  6. Find your offense, organization. It's in there somewhere.
  7. I like good usage of the future perfect tense.
  8. Vintage Niese turning everybody over.
  9. Bad things happen when the Mets wear the chrome-colored insigniae.
  10. So, Ron didn't like the jalapeo mac 'n' cheese dog?
  11. Harrison is running the bases with an oven mitt on his hand. Two-nil.
  12. Another offensive wet blanket out there. Baseball is getting kooky. We're in a low offense era and nobody knows it. At least there have been only two strikeouts, both by Conforto.
  13. Sterling Marte, besides being a great place to buy your silver wholesale, is probably their hottest hitter and probably their best overall until Andrew McCutcheon turns it around. Jonathon Niese, who had a superhero nickname for the Mets before it was cool, is joined in the Cult of Familiarity by manager Clint Hurdle, who switched between left and right with Rusty Staub in the funnest game the Mets and Pirates have ever played; pitching coach Ray Searage, the only Met with a 1.000 winning percentage and a 1.000 batting average; and bench coach Dave Jauss, who coached some mean bench with the Mets back in 2010 before transferring to "coordinator of staff development" in 2011, which I took to mean that he organized retreats and such. 40-Man roster reserve Josh Bell once tried to kill me with a line drive while playing for the Bowie Baysox. I'm still not sure how I dodged that ball. I suspect it phased right through me. It was Superhero Night at the ballpark, so perhaps I was super-powered just for the duration of the ballgame.
  14. Well, there's always exceptions: David Ortíz and ... um ... Fred Flintstone.
  15. Today is Steve Chilcott Day Plus 50!
  16. Mets set the return d'Ate for on about June 26, according to the Rube. He's 1-5 so far in the FSL, DHing in his first game back.
  17. Frayed Knot wrote: Well either way you're still down a man on the roster; your way just means that you're a man short in the pen rather than on the bench. Sometimes that will be the better option, but not always. Well, you don't really have to teach me the math. Frayed Knot wrote: The major question still remains whether being short a man (whether hurler or position player) for 1-3 days is worse than maybe being without a key player for most of two weeks unnecessarily. Well, I've declared a third way around that, to be short in a place of much greater redundancy, much less likely to represent a one-day pinch. Frayed Knot wrote: Not trying to pretend that there's one blanket answer for these situations, but there seem to be a whole lot of people with internet medical degrees who already know how long Lagares is going to be out. Well, I ain't one of them. But if the team decides to keep Lagares active, maybe that's the move to make. If he can get his glove over his thumb, anyhow.
  18. Last year the Mets were able to ride out the injury storm, staying in striking distance, and murdering 'em down the stretch. But last year, the Mets had a soft schedule down the stretch, and Washington steadfastly refused to pull away. The Nats are still refusing this year too, but how much can a team count on that? Heating up are the suddenly Crawford-free Los Angeles Dodgers, now the co-owners of the second Wild Card spot, and Baseball Prosectus' still-favorite to win the West. 19. Yeah, it's not like Wright is a rabble-rousing revolutionary. But it's the whole idea that, when a guy under your flag doesn't represent your alleged virtues, then you re-write your idea of what constitutes virtues. That's maddening. (You can see that nonsense every day among Trump supporters. Suddenly, supporters of the party of patriotic duty and family values are re-writing all that to incorporate a three-time draft-dodger, serial-philanderer wife rapist.)
  20. Frayed Knot wrote: Plawecki owes us Schaefer for today's game! Fans apparently have been giving him worse shit than this the last 24 hours, because he has deleted his Twitter account.
  21. In fairness, Wright was examined, treated, and evaluated. It just turned out that the hopes for the initial, lesser treatment to be effective were not fruitful.
  22. Figures. Harvey is so soft.
  23. Frayed Knot wrote: The problem with the immediate replacement (beyond the time squeeze of getting someone across the country for a day game) is that it requires an immediate DL or some separate move. If it just turns out to be a couple day thing -- like say with Cespedes and his hip -- then going a day or three minus a guy is often better than having a regular miss the minimum 15 even though he'll likely be healthy for maybe 10-12 of them. If all DL trips were apparent immediately such calls would be easy but it doesn't always work that way. I think they'll probably know on Lagares either today or tomorrow and make a call then. One thing every roster needs in such situations is Fungible Interchangeable Backend RelieversTM. You send down Verrett, call up Nimmo, live without a seven-man bullpen for a day or two (the horror!). If the injury, after that day or two, turns out to be serious, Lagares hits the DL, Nimmo stays, and Verrett returns. If the injury turns out to be much ado about nuttin', then Nimmo returns to Vegas, and Verrett returns to New York. If it's too soon for Verrett to return within the rules, then the team calls up one of Verrett's fellow FIBRs, Sean Gilmartin or Rafael Montero, both already on the roster and big-league experienced, for whatever that's worth. I don't know about you, but my life has seen a vast improvement since I switched to a high-FIBR diet. It's changed my outlook and allowed me to do things I never could before. I'm never changing back.
