1. Hopefully some of these guys will be quick arrivers to reinforce the current unit. Do guys named Blake ever make it, though?
2. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I dunno if Wilmer is incapable or just, that's what his swing does best so that's what he does. I'm still not certain Bell didn't split his pants there. Come on, Arizona, give your guys some fabric.
3. I'm not one to say never, but it's certainly something that struck me early. I'm hoping that he wouldn't necessarily have to go the other way with authority, but just making enough contact to keep the pitcher and the defense honest would be nice. He's had 25 career homers 14 to left, 10 to left-center, and one to right. Interestingly enough, that one opposite-fielder was his very first career homer, off of Heath Bell back in 2013.
4. Centerfield wrote: Edgy MD wrote: Way to go the other way tonight, FWilmer. Can I say what a thing of beauty it was to watch these opposite field hits? I know it's not as easy as some would make it seem, but man, take the ball the other way boys. You'll score 11 runs every game. Wilmer's swing traditionally has given him almost no coverage on the outside of the plate. That's where they've pitched him traditionally and fouls or balls on siders away have been the best we can hope for. He hurts the pitcher with a few doinks the other way, which is when I made that post, and finally they had to come in on him the next time. FLABOOM!! was his answer. I heart the AdaptoMets. It's been a long time coming.
5. A 19-hit attack is great for getting folks into the exit lane. Matt Reynolds, for instance, opened the game as a .200 hitter and ended it at .280. So long, interstate!! Eric Campbell is taking his batting average back down to the minors, traveling by way of I-59, from Wildwood Georgia to Slidell, Louisiana. Don't throw a rod down there, Enrique. Alejando de Aza, unfortunately, only got into tonight's game as a late-inning defensive replacement, and did not get to join in the hitfest, leaving him stuck on I-73, bouncing around North Carolina between Ellerbe and Greensboro. Ty Kelly has also returned to the minors, having last been seen in the slow lane of I-74, heading deliberately into Iowa's Quad Cities, recalling the satisfaction of knocking one homer during his brief stay, knowing he can do that again if he returns. René Rivera must love the interstate a little too much because even after three hits tonight, he's still wheeling around I-85, from Richmond, down to Montgomery. Catawba country. Lots of history down there. Don't be trying to make any more of that history, René. Just hit your turn signal and exit. That is all.
6. I didn't write that, so I ask you... again... to please spare me the smug responses.
7. The Pirates' pitcher has an ERA 73.3% higher than that of the Mets. The offense woke up last night and Pirate pen is sapped. Let's keep the tap open.
8. Unless they work real hard to hammer out a meaningful joint statement up front, one thing they'd have to lose is credibility as an organization that won't tolerate domestic assault.
9. That's a cleanup hitter.
10. Way to go the other way tonight, FWilmer.
11. Screw you, malaise!!
12. I'd like to congratulate Asdrubal Cabrera, our maligned opening day #7 hitter for his graduation to the cleanup slot. As you know, appearing in a Mets game as a cleanup hitter entitles you to $50 in gift certificates redeemable at your local Getty filling station. Getty it's something to think about.
13. This Locke guy has an ERA 2.69 times higher than Syndergaard's. But even at home, that scarcely adds up to even money, the way the Mets are playing. Plus, at least a few folks are going to make a Thor vs. Lo©ki pun. Ugh. Anyhow, new things need to be discovered. Corners must be turned. Batting coaches must adjust even the most foundational of their philosophies. They are literally making their manager sick. Eventually they will adjust, and find something that works, because everybody always does. The question is whether it will be in time. You know when a good to adjust is? Tomorrow. That's a good day.
14. Flurgh. Bats. We needs the bats.
15. So much for that strategy. #TheKangShow
16. Remember, Mets pitchers and defense, just do everything perfectly until the other team trips over itself and gifts you a run or two. STRATEGY!
17. I switched minor league team updates from weekly to bi-weekly based on interest, and in doing so, I've missed Nimmo thundering to a 10-game hitting streak, not counting the one game he appeared as a defensive replacement. If you take out a single 0-1 game, he's reached in 25 straight games in which he's come to the plate. He's homered three times this week, and it's pretty safe to say that he's achieved star status at this point, if only at the AAA level. .330 / .409 / .527 // .937 They may be enjoying his encroaching power, and perhaps want to see him get comfortable with his home run swing, but I'd be flummoxed if we don't see him by the All Star Break.
18. That's it. I'm sending my imaginary children to Rowan County Senior High School. I can't imagine a function that uniform wouldn't be appropriate garb for.
19. Possible. We'll see which. He's not the sort of bad and hopelessly getting worse that you need to make up a false injury to hide him, though. At his age, you can just demote him for a week.
20. Mets take a lesson from the Phils, and add a Goeddel. Tyler's brother brings his career sub-1.00 WHIP back to Queens. When you're the long reliever and they throw you a spot start, watch out, they may soon find little use for you as a long reliever. 21. Not for nothing, but it seems a highly questionable tribute to honor Hank Aaron by naming a mascot dog after him.
22. I tend to think that Michael Conforto being treated for tendonitis > Michael Conforto having lost his swing.
23. The first-ever Cubano Met. And still only one of 12. That's not insignificant for a team that would one day wear New York Cubans uniforms.
