  1. Could be Montero. Could be Verrett or Gilly or some combination of the three. And Matz is still in play of course. Along with one day off. I'm not thinking the decision over which of them goes will be what keeps 'em out the playoffs.
  2. deGrom confirmed for Sunday's start. Got to release my breath.
  3. I was hoping this would happen before the season ended, though I had suspected my hope would be in vain. This helps, if only for pinch running and possibly defensive substituting. Exciting! And Duda can't be far behind! 4. The Iowa Baseball Confederacy was hot stuff. Magic realism and the 1908 Cubs and Native Americans and US cultural history and existentialism and all that. Elements of some his short stories were adapted into it as well.
  5. More importantly, I'd prefer that the Mets be mathematically locked into things.
  6. Pause a moment and honor the life of W.P. Kinsella, Canadian-American novelist who married magic realism to baseball as if they were born to be together. Let's hope there's a cornfield out there somewhere with a place for him. cRfVu9ay1VU
  7. Which can't go bad.
  8. Fine, it's hard to throw strikes, but why throw the breaking pitch in the dirt 3-2 with the tying run on deck? A walk is the same as a homer there.
  9. Just stick with pitchers when they're succeeding. It's not complicated at all.

Terry won't, but I would. Right on! (Though stop talking to yourself. It's creepy.) Of course, I would have left Colón in. Two of Dozier's homers were as a DH, so he needs three more to catch Davey Johnson and Rogers Hornsby for the record by a secondbaseman, but the Mets are doing their part in defending Davey's legacy. He nonetheless has already caught Alfonso Soriano for the AL record.
  11. Now leave De Aza in to play center. Please.
  12. They actually pulled him after 78 pitches.
  13. Five-pitch inning. Mercy.
  14. Keith just made a Seinfeld reference and nobody in the booth got it. He may have finally worn out the novelty of being a guest star.
  15. I think Terry likes how Johnson's bat plays off of the bench. I do too, and that's why I think it might be good to play that bat off the bench four times.
  16. That's kind of goofy. They're competing in a league-wide race, so it should be their records in the league that distinguishes them. How they fared in the division should count in a division race.
  17. Apparently, his neck has been feeling better but his wrist won't allow him to swing the bat. Anthony DiComo with the scoop.
  18. Botox, huh? I guess that's Papi's secret.
  19. Duda had dreamed some pretty nice defense in the year before he got hurt. And in the time since we've had Bruce, Loney has been the lesser player. But the real issue now is that Flores has been out with a mystery injury, making the team even shorter from the right side and making Campbell the main alternative to Loney.

  21. Worth noting that James Loney hasn't hit much at all this whole run. It seems like six weeks without him. And I don't think he'll see another lefty all year except maybe by accident.
  22. Probably. On the other hand, if he AND Loney were average ... . In fairness, nobody elbus got it done today.
  23. That head would look good on a roll.
  24. And Wilson Ramos hits a homer off the Mets fourth- or fifth-best reliever, whereas back in 1972, Tug McGraw would've been first out of the pen in a scoreless tie.
  25. I'm all about that. The Mets had two guys qualified to finish games for 10 years or more. You can stretch it from 1969 to 1989 if you want to force the issue.
