It's just a player. I know we're supposed to have polarized positions on the guy, but it's just a player.

And with two out and a runner on first, and Matt Kemp coming up, Washington looks to pitcher #10, Mat Latos.

Washington goes to Matt Grace, pitcher #9 (turn me on, dead man), and Ender Inciarte leads off with a single.

I'm hoping this means 10 more innings before they ultimately lose.

For the last month, the Rockies have been showing more heart than the rest of that division put together. Good for them. I'm totally rooting for them to get back in it.

From The Washington Post: Stephen Strasburg unfurled the pitch, and into the great unknown it sailed. There may not have been many on hand during a sewing-circle-sized gathering at Nationals Park, but here came the collective groan, which may have originally had its roots in frustration. That is, somehow, how we have grown to treat his every malady, with a shrug of the shoulders and a roll of the eyes and a look to the bullpen. But then Strasburg punched his glove three times. Then he threw one more pitch. Then he walked off the mound covering his mouth with his glove. Then, dreadfully, came the realization that every possible fate, almost all of them nasty, sat right there on the table for the Washington Nationals right-hander. A season that is barreling straight toward October suddenly teetered. Heckuva writeup from Barry Svrluga. Nats and Braves tied at 3 in the 10th. Washington on their eighth pitcher.

I'm counting on 19 more from Colón.

He was pretty chunky in the mid-rift when bmfc and I saw him in Bowie a fortnight back. He could use six weeks with Mike Barwis this offseason.

Trading off the world, injuries in the big leagues, and other realities left the Mets with far less winning in their farm system than in recent years, particularly at the top level. St. Lucie holds all the Mets chips for minor league post-season glory, having won the Florida State League's South Division's second half division race. Sadly, they fell 11-6 in the playoff opener against Bradenton, as Chris Flexen got hit hard. This wasn't due to lack of effort from David Thompson. David, coming off a breakthrough year in Columbia and St. Lucie (95 RBI in just 116 games!) went 3-5 with two doubles in the loss. Hopefully the fates will smile sweeter today behind the efforts of another breakthrough player, pitcher P.J. Conlon. Belfast child P.J. has followed a stunning first half in Columbia (8-1, 1.84 ERA in 12 starts with 61 strikeouts against only 10 walks in 78.1 innings) with perhaps an equally accomplished second half in the FSL (4-1, 1.41(!), in 63.2 innings over 11 starts, striking out 51 and walking 14). Did I say perhaps? Perhaps is bullshit. P.J. rocked. And you'll be rocked also if you tune in tonight for Conlon's post-season debut. This guy has Sterling Award written right across his face.

And some artificial Cespiration. Very nice.

Asdouble! That's the attitude! Fighting spirit!

Punch back, Mets offense.

Y'know a good time to start warming up another pitcher?

And Terry somehow moved Grandson to the middle of the lineup at just the right time. The Mets are Kings of the Pinch Homer, aren't they?

When SNY puts up a graphic displaying the Mets defense, it always depicts them superimposed on a computer-generated diamond, complete with outfield walls and foul poles. But that diamond is displayed over an actual shot of the playing field. Redundant! Wasteful! Also, the depths and heights of the computer generated walls reflect those of Citi Field, even if the game is on the road. Inaccurate! Lazy!

Those returning injured players initially take up room occupied when players declare free agency, of which the Mets will have several, along with spots created by non-tenderees, of which we can anticipate a few. Meanwhile, Rafael Montego is apparently playing baseball for the Mets, though I can't find the transaction that says he's back on their roster. I hope there was one, or they're going to have to forfeit. Yeah, he's been in uniform since 9/1. I was waiting to see if somebody got transferred to the 60-man DL to make room for Cecchini. I imagine Niese will get that honor. I love the fact that the team went all in with the all-hands-on-deck roster last season, and it looks like they're pretty close to doing it again. I'd like to see them bring back Laggy as a pinch runner and maybe a defensive reserve, but it looks like his season is over. Montero will also likely return and hopefully Matz too. I failed to note it, but Ruggiano was transferred to the 60-Day DL when Salas was added, so his season is categorically done, I guess. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Eh. I wanted to see Cecchini to get a start. We know Reynolds is just a guy who gets into one every now and then. I don't think Terry intends on giving Cecchini any starts until this playoff race sorts itself out. He's practically said as much. I myself was visioning on T.J. Rivera.

Running R.J. Reynolds right back out there, Terry is.

The Mets are now a better-than-even-money bet to see the post-season. There once was a Red named Brandon Finnegan He'd take some lumps upon his chinnigan He'd sometimes lose but then he'd win again Let's beat Brandon Finnegan Oh he'd get drunk on bathtub gin again And then he'd trash the motor inn again Yeah, he'd repent, but then he'd sin again Let's beat Brandon Finnegan But Bryan Price loved Brandon Finnegan He'd bench his ass, but then put him in again Oh, win ye Mets! Search deep within again Let's beat Brandon Finnegan

It's Dave Schneck!

In about as much of this sort of drama as the Pacific Coast League can provide, T.J. Rivera, entering the final game for Las Vegas batting .350, collected three hits to win the batting crown off of his next-closest rival, teammate Brandon Nimmo. Rivera's three knocks raised his batting average to .353, while Nimmo's 1-5 lowered his rate to .352. It sure gives them something to talk about on the plane to Cincinnati. Third in the league was also a Las Vegas 51, infielder Gavin Cecchini, who hit .325, and will also be joining his teammates on the plane. Michael Conforto (.422 in 128 AB), Eric Campbell (.301 in 302 AB), and Kevin Plawecki (.300 in 190 AB) also hit .300 but failed to qualify for the batting race.
