Striking him out twice should be enough.

Corn, 1 can.

Lonely, that was your ball.

Do you think he finds himself under a ton of pressure here and says to himself, "Fuck it, I hate my hair."

Hero?

Jay Bruce, you have TNT in your bat tonight. T-N-T.

So, they indeed went for both, and go into the game with two reserve starters. Fine. But apart from Kelly over Duda, the call that gets me is Edgin over Smoker. This seems contrary to the way Terry had been using them down the stretch, giving Smokestack higher-leverage situations and seemingly having more confidence in him against righties. If Edgin is going to get in there, it's going to be merely as a LOOGy. But I guess in a one-game "series," you look to get the highest yield out of your specialists.

Sorry, Boo. I did everything I could for you, up to and including living in denial. If the team is down in the late innings, and need a three-run bomb off the bench, I'm not sure where they're going to turn. But here's to that not being an issue. I don't think I have any Belgian in me, but I'm definitely chunkier, with more character.

You're bloody right! Out with Doo, in with Ty Kelly!

I think, if the Mets win THIS GAME, we have to go blond. But it's "blond," man. "Blonde" is, like, feminine. Latvian chicks are blonde. American ballplayers are blond.

The more or less did a good job with some tough choices, I think. I'm surprised they're carrying three starters. Being prepared for the game to go 18 is prudent, but being prepared for the game to go 25 seems nutty. But I think they want to give Terry leeway to use a quick hook. You'll like it, but there's some weird anachronisms. Like, it's 1985, and it's Dublin, and everybody's caught up in an economic decline that is mirrored in a decline of the family, the culture, the church, and all sorts of societal institutions. And that reads as authentic. And escaping the economic trap generally means escaping to England or points beyond. And that's authentic too. But ... it's 1985. In Dublin. And U2 isn't mentioned once. And if nothing else was preserving Ireland's cultural identity in 1985, especially among youth, it was the message from U2 and others that music was happening right then and there among them. Musicians were the ones that didn't need to go abroad to find a future. Hell, with the Waterboys and the Pogues and even Bob Fucking Dylan, musicians were coming to Ireland to make music. And record labels were scouting the hell out of the country looking for native talent. In Tua Nua! Something Happens! I salute John Carney and the vein of gold he has found, but he seems to have a bit of a stick up his ass. Maybe he hates U2—and he wouldn't be the first—but they are unavoidably part of his story, and somehow he avoids them. Not only does he fail to give them even a mealy-mouthed acknowledgement, but he throws a minor hissy whenever somebody makes a comparison between his film and The Commitments. He himself was a member of The Frames in the early nineties, and I get the notion that he was one of the thousand Dublin musicians who auditioned for The Commitments and still holds a grudge because he didn't get cast. But The Commitments clearly remains as an obvious reference point for the film, as does a handful of eighties school torment films like My Bodyguard and Heaven Help Us, among others. Good films.

McGwire is close but as someone already said - we shouldn't have a 'Veterans Committee' putting guys in right after they didn't get in on the merits. I'd take "none of the above" Well, I would disagree with the implication that an induction following a selection by the Veterans Committee isn't getting in on the merits. At least, certainly not definitively so. A gap at least until the end of the period when he would have remained on the BBWAA ballot seems prudent, though. Steinbrenner, it should be noted was (amazingly, to my thinking) on the Board of Directors of the Hall of Fame following his reinstatement, though I doubt many of the current board served with him.

That's the problem, though. If Terry's looking for "What have you done for me lately?" evidence —and he clearly does give weight to that sort of thin — it's the hero of game 161 vs. the goat of game 162.

Speaking of stories about awkward romantic relationships with your relations.

Chilling. Any truth to the story that the Giants' website declared Hunter Pence tonight's MVP before the game even started?

Frayed Knot wrote: So the Jays were reportedly deciding between Marcus Stroman and Nelson Liriano for the start tonight and wound up using both - similar to the scenario being discussed in the other thread about whether Terry should consider using Bartolo out of the bullpen on Wednesday. Of course most teams won't have as big a fall-off (at least by reputation) from their 1 & 2 starters to their 3rd & 4th as the Mets do, but they did what they needed to do to move on. And the probable CY winner out of the pen for the O's never makes an appearance despite Buck using seven different pitchers. Yup, Buck went to the hill with less than his best.

Say what you want about Terry's bullpen usage, but this kind of balance is hard to achieve, even on purpose: Relief Innings, 2016 Mets T1. Jeurys Familia: 77.2 T1. Addison Reed: 77.2 T1. Hansel Robles: 77.2 4. Antonio Bastardo: 43.2 5. Jerry Blevins: 42.0 6. Erik Goeddel: 35.2 7. Jim Henderson: 35.0 8. Logan Verrett: 31.2 9. Fernando Salas: 17.1 10. Sean Gilmartin: 17.0

Hunter Pence reads Gasoline Alley.

I realize bad teams make managers look bad but Snitker and MacKanin looked totally at of their depth. And I say that while fully realizing that the SHaBs totally pantsed the SHaMs out there.

Hopefully the world's softest trollers will be out in force at Citi Field to let the world know just what a public menace Hunter Pence really is. [fimg=500]http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/z4dg3dahynnw6ln7jnhm.png[/fimg]

Well, if I'm in the 12th inning of a win-or-go-home game, and I've burned all my bullpenners, and I need a starter to carry me through the marathon until somebody scores, he's the best guy (to my thinking, anyhow). If that desperate and unlikely but potentially real situation doesn't come to pass, great, and he starts Game One. If it does happen, I want him available, and will figure out Game One of the Division Series when it comes.

Terry has tipped his hand a little. He's carrying nine pitchers. I'm sticking with (1) Syndergaard, (2) Colon, (3) Familia, (4) Reed, (5) Salas, (6) Blevins, (7) Robles, (8) Smoker, and (9) Goeddel or Henderson. T.J. will be in the lineup ... somewhere. He's mum on the Who's on First? question. Why create a controversy 30 hours before game time?
