  1. Our crack security officer Ørn back there always had one eye on the winning cover display, but was never too overbearing a presence. People felt comfortable approaching the display, but not too comfortable, you know? The change in our security protocols since he replaced Valter can be felt up and down the organization. He's a wiz at the cyber, too.
  2. As for me and my house, we knew Guillermo Mota was going to blow up in the post-season. Knew it. Historically erase that strikeout all you want, but the pall of the Duaner Sanchez accident still looms. It's still Omar Minaya playing fast and loose with money that we now know wasn't really there. Omar is still Omar. Willie is still Willie. Beltran is still Beltran, but microfractures are still microfractures. It's tough, man. What's interesting are all the small-but-stupid deals that might not have happened had a world championship tempered Omar's desperation — J.J. Putz. Ambiorix Burgos. Begone from history. I do like the idea of imagining a history of Willie getting Jerry's tenure at the helm. Jerry may have been two ticks brighter, but what good is that when you're so pigheaded?
  3. Well, if Wright somehow is ready for opening day, Reyes may end up at second or as a super sub. I still don't think center is out of the question.
  4. Actually, we don't know at this point what salary the Mets and Reyes have agreed to for 2017. The team offered him a 2017 option, but the figure hasn't been disclosed. In fact, I don't think they've even officially picked it up yet.
  5. Also keep in mind, even Céspedes was in danger of being left at the altar last off-season. It was a bearish market. I'm not sure it's going to change. With the poor impulse control of George Steinbrenner out the picture, teams get more sophisticated about their offseason shopping every year.
  6. Murphy, on the other hand, was reduced to shitting his pants, wondering if he was holding a one-way ticket to Desmondville, before signing a three-year deal at a disappointing rate that he admitted was the only offer he got, and the Nats admitted their braintrust was split about offering. Nobody knows where the market is going, and turning down money on the table with hopes of a better long-term offer from a team that also has to give up a first-round pick is never risk-free proposition, and certainly not from a guy whose season ended on the operating table. If a guy who carried his team through the post season, homering on nightly basis against baseball's very best pitchers, can't go forward with certainty, I imagine few can. Here's my guess: I say he rejects the qualifying offer if Hillary Clinton is elected, but grabs it anxiously and stuffs it in his pants if Donald Trump is elected.
  7. Two other factors for not moving on at this very point: [*:6v3fwury]His trade value is likely still depressed. The Mets didn't give up anything but dignity when they pulled him into the boat last season. A team dealing for him now would give up some of that, some talent, and at least some (not yet reported) salary.[/*:m:6v3fwury] [*:6v3fwury]The team has little to no idea what they'll be getting from David Wright in spring. X-factors like that tend to make teams conservative in protecting their backup plans and redundancies.[/*:m:6v3fwury][/list:o:6v3fwury]
  8. I think of all the dynamic and exciting players, unless/until Brando Nimmo establishes himself, Reyes is the best option they have as a leadoff batter. Really he's the most viable leadoff hitter they've had since he left. I'm generally of the mindset of forcing young players to win jobs, rather than handing fulltime roles to them them. Like Granderson and Bruce, he's a veteran in the last year of his contract, the perfect guy to pit against upcoming talent.
  9. As noted, I certainly didn't adopt him on name only.
  10. WE HAVE A TIM TEBOW HIT IN CAPTIVITY!! I REPEAT, TIM TEBOW HAS JUST GARNERED HIS FIRST HIT IN THE ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE OFF OF CUBS PROSPECT DUANE UNDERWOOD, JR.!! ACTUALLY, THAT'S NOT A REPEAT, SO MUCH AS A REPHRASE WITH FURTHER CLARIFICATION!! Underwood, for his part, was immediately removed from the game, so his teammates would not have to wait to begin mercilessly riding him. [tweet:33bxd2sq] [/tweet:33bxd2sq]
  11. Whatshisname is back in the lineup today, DHing his ass off. Whiffed in his first at bat. In fact, he's the only Scottsdale Scorp who has fanned through their first 10 plate appearances. Champ Stuart is also 0-2.
  12. That changes the reckoning significantly.
  13. Dickensian-nomickered starting pitcher flourished at three levels last season. Mixed 31 innings between starting and the bullpen for Brooklyn going 0-1 with one save and a 3.19 ERA. Promoted to Columbia, he gets into only four games, but three are starts. In 28.2 innings, he produces an even lower ERA mark of 2.51. Jumping OVER St. Lucie, he arrives in Binghamton and starts one game, giving up only one run (earned) in six innings. That over all—a 2.47 ERA over 65.2 innings over three levels (three levels which span four) should be enough to love him for. The NAME should be enough to love him for. But get this: 7 walks and 74 strikeouts. SWOON!
  14. d'Kong76 wrote: Edgy MD wrote: he's likely there because he's got a lot of catching up to do and needs as many reps as possible in as short a time as possible. As possible for what or to what end? He needs reps to get his high-school stroke back to play professionally? Things don't leak out like they used to when we had HVAC Guy at Shea to report to us, but this was obviously a back-room agent favor or a publicity stunt. *clink* To better prepare him to play and advance, I imagine. If his signing nothing more than a empty stunt, then whether he plays in the AFL or not is of little consequence. It's more of the same. And we shouldn't root against his deployment in the AFL so much much as his employment under any circumstances. If his signing is in earnest, then he needs reps whenever and wherever he can get them. I certainly think he's over his head, but probably over his head in a more controlled environment than a Caribbean team would afford him, where he'd have to earn his playing time, and likely rot on the bench, and require some personal security. As long as he's in the system though, he needs as much action as he can get. To prove himself or hang himself, whichever it may be. Oswalt gets his second start today for the Scorps.
  15. I think the notion that d'Arnaud can't throw somebody out is distinctly overstated. It's not like having Rivera catch Syndergaard in 23 of his 33 starts stopped Syndergaard from allowing the most stolen bases against in decades. If anything, I'd like to see Travis prove that he can sing as well as his brother. [youtube:3awpil23]_xnG1Bs4k18[/youtube:3awpil23]
  16. Possibly, but I think it comes down to whether Neil Walker is an asset at $17.2 million for one year, or something more like a liability.

  18. Last night, as we slept soundly in our beds, 19 Mets minor leaguers laid awake stirring, looking the end of their dreams square in the face. Take a minute and call your favorite minor leaguer and see how he's doing. It's a tough business. 19. Soccer surgery.
  20. Well, I imagine they are not telling anybody that. But he's likely there because he's got a lot of catching up to do and needs as many reps as possible in as short a time as possible.
  21. seawolf17 wrote: Not necessarily. Make the offer now. If he's not interested, wish him the best and send him on his way. No, I mean to say that two-year offer is unlikely to happen if the QO isn't extended first.
  22. Well, if you want to bring him back, making a qualifying offer is generally something of a prelude to re-signing the guy, isn't it?
  23. If you believe that, then that's why you make the offer, no?
  24. Well, the idea isn't so much to spend it on him, as to gain a free first-round draft choice when he passes that up for a longer-term contract with less annual value, a la Murphy 2016. If he accepts, they may opt to trade him, even if that means eating $2-4 million.
  25. Neil Walker: Looking at a qualifying offer of $17.2 million. Coming off a good year, but a year that ended on the DL. A year that ended with surgery.
