  2. I also inexplicably left Rivera out of the summaries. I won't, however, say anything about depth of options. No, sir, not me.
  3. It's as good at time as any to confess that neither Rookie of the Year nor Major League (nor its sequels) do anything for me.
  4. The fans could vote on which mascot they prefer: [fimg=300:qh2l8wak]http://jkhgroup.com/creepyspiderFM71125.jpg[/fimg:qh2l8wak] [fimg=300:qh2l8wak]http://www.spotsound.co.uk/8780-thickbox_default/spider-mascot-with-rastafarian-jamaican-reggae-colors.jpg[/fimg:qh2l8wak] [fimg=300:qh2l8wak]http://www.herostime.com/image/cache/data/Spiderman%20Costumes/SC070/new-Silk-Spider-morph-suit-Silk-Cindy-Moon-Spider-Costume-SC070-174x232.jpg[/fimg:qh2l8wak] [fimg=300:qh2l8wak]https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/f4/ce/d4/f4ced47a0d9803ee2974c8f45dc31b39.jpg[/fimg:qh2l8wak] [fimg=300:qh2l8wak]http://d2ydh70d4b5xgv.cloudfront.net/images/c/8/marvel-kawaii-metallic-mascot-3-5in-plush-toy-spider-man-9be7d011d198b9cc4170f6fd09a1ab12.jpg[/fimg:qh2l8wak] [fimg=300:qh2l8wak]http://images.asadart.com/sources/com/halloweenexpress/images/imagecache/375-252-CC20149.jpg[/fimg:qh2l8wak]
  5. I don't know that any manager drives such basic principles home anymore. It's maddening. But mercy, we've got a Game 7. [tweet:6nmtb9e7]https://twitter.com/OldHossRadbourn/status/793670916668555264[/tweet:6nmtb9e7]
  6. Man there's a thousand articles out there this morning, all with a paucity of facts.
  7. There's still time for the Indians to lose that stupid logo before Game Seven.
  8. Armando Benitez also turned himself on a domestic assault case. The charge was eventually dropped. And I'm SURE Benitez is neither the first Met or first Met reliever to have such an issue.
  9. Domestic abuse is an "automatic arrest" situation. If the police respond to a report, and see evidence, no amount of reasoning and explanation from the alleged perp and alleged victim will allow them to avoid making an arrest. So there may well be an arrest, police report, acknowledgement, even if the circumstances aren't what they appear. I'm not, to be sure, claiming that, but it's certainly plausible.
  10. Gavin Cecchini and Champ Stuart both 1-2 with a run so far today. Stuart, who has surprisingly been hitting every time they run him out there, has a double.
  11. Anybody else read the story about a month ago (I think an excerpt from a book) in which he acknowledges his disappearance for a season back around 2011 was due to a paralyzed vocal chord, sustained as a complication from a hairplug surgery — something he has gotten addicted to? http://www.si.com/tech-media/2016/10/06/joe-buck-fox-book-hair-plugs-surgery-voice Joe's a crazy guy. He may be the living embodiment of Biff Thunderpants.
  12. In happier news, Jeff Pearlman has received 50,000 retweets for his tweet about his daughter's Halloween costume. [tweet:sgrh1fxo]https://twitter.com/jeffpearlman/status/792553544045858816[/tweet:sgrh1fxo]
  13. Amazingly, I failed to list Reyes as part of the picture at any position. Depth!
  14. The built-in redundancy at most positions gives me confidence, along with relative youth, along with (presumably) some money to spend as Walker, Céspedes, and Colón come off the books. That money, of course, may well be spent on Walker, Céspedes, and Colón, but I doubt all three return. What doesn't give me confidence necessarily is Terry's ability to sort through those options, and land on the best combinations.
  15. Which positions do you have the most amount of confidence in for 2017? Which do you have the least? Feel free to rank them. Catcher: Is d'Arnaud d'Arnothing? Is Plawecki really the polish word for banjo? Is Nido an illusion on the horizon? First Base: How big a step back has Duda taken? Is there anything to Terry's maniacally persistent confidence that Campbell is a few swings from finding himself? How soon do we see Smith? How much gut does he intend to play with? Does his power show up? Will one of the outfielders, perhaps Conforto, be forced to pick up a firstbaseman's mitt? Second Base: Does Walker get re-signed? Is this where you want Flores to land? Does Flores return freshly from his compounding injuries? Is Cecchini ticketed for the right side of the diamond? Is he ready to make the jump? Third Base: Does the big guy have anything left? Does he return, but without his full torque (and power) like fellow spinal fusion patient Nick Markakis? Is this where Flores lands? Does Flores ever land at all? Shortstop: Can Cabrera do it again? Can he do even a reasonable facsimile of it? Is Reynolds a major league backup? Who gets to the bigs first—Evans or Rosario? Does Evans slide to another position also? Left Field: Will Céspedes return? Will Céspedes return? And, oh yeah, will Céspedes return? Meanwhile, can Conforto regain his big league traction? And if Céspedes returns, at which position will he get a chance to regain it? Center Field: Which direction do we go here? Granderson is the incumbent, but that was a desperate team running out of options. Do they really pencil him in at the start of a season? Does a healthy-legged Céspedes (and, oh yeah, will he return?) get another look out there? Was Conforto's modest success in a short look something to take seriously? A healthy Laggy? Perhaps platooning with Nimmo? Perhaps platooning with Conforto? Lots of possibilities, but who knows the right one? Right Field: Should Céspedes return, do they finally shift him to where his skill set screams he belongs? Will Granderson get to continue the most significant tenure in right since Strawberry? Is this where they look to establish Nimmo as a potential top-of-the-order hitter? Will Taijeron remain buried in the Las Vegas sand forever? Lots of options! All over the diamond! But few obvious paths. At almost no position but shortstop is the opening day guy a lock. Duda's probably at first, but there's still a possibility (if only slight) that he's a non-tenderino. So, where, if anywhere, do you feel most secure? Where least?
  16. Tim Tebow and his impressively wanting .125 / .176 / .156 // .332 line have provided great cover in Arizona for Matt Oberste. The oberstwhile Binghamton corner infielder is wham-POW! 0-for-23 so far this fall, with no walks and seven strikeouts. He has managed to drive in a run with a sacrifice fly, but he has some climbing to do to overtake Tee' and escape the mantle of the Least Successful AFL-er of 2016.
  17. Cool Mike Vaccaro account of how the 1986 Mets saved a marriage. Ironically enough, I'd be surprised if any more than 20% of the marriages of the 1986 Mets are still active today.
  18. Gwreck wrote: Funnily enough, Reed and Familia each pitched exactly 77 2/3 innings this year. Reed gave up fewer hits, fewer walks, fewer runs and struck out more batters. Hansel Robles, as fate would have it, also pitched exactly 77 2/3 innings. Struck out one more batter than Familia.
  19. It also speaks to how some of these guys are floating under the radar with regard to illicit drug use, despite the testing regime in place.
  20. Fourth Met to win this, following Gary Carter, Al Leiter, and Carlos Delgado.
  21. The 2016 Roberto Clemente Award honoree is Curtis Granderson. Press conference and presentation NOW!!!! Video WWW.FACEBOOK.COM
  22. I played the 1969 Mets once with a 3x2 rotation. Seaver and Ryan on day one. Koosman and McAndrew on day two. Gentry and Cardwell on day three. Many asses were kicked.
  23. It's important to remember he didn't really put up MVP-type numbers, and he wasn't particularly close. He was 53rd in fWar, for instance. Guys ahead of him included Odubel Herrera and Charlie Blackmon, Cesar Hernandez and D.J. LeMahieu.
  24. The thing is that up to a certain level, many minor league teams are run sort of like that. I have trouble believing it's necessarily defense-neutral, for the same reason I wouldn't have pulled Syndergaard in game 163. Some days your best relievers aren't good at all, and there's money in sticking with the guy who is pitching well, no matter how good your pen is.
  25. The Ralph Kiner TV Booth?
