  1. Edwin Encarnacion. He's pretty fly.
  2. I just don't think he is categorically elite in any unique sense, and am open to the idea that their filthy money might find more productivity on the trade and/or free agent market. I don't know. There's certainly an argument to return the same team, and hope for better health, and there's certainly an argument to transition at a bunch of key offensive spots. They'll probably go for something in between. It's strange how little success they on one hand had at establishing new offensive starters this season, with Conforto and d'Arnaud taking a step back and others failing to take a step forward (except Rivera); but on the other hand, established new starters in the pitching rotation where there seemed to be few genuine top-level prospects left and little room for opportunity for them that remained. But when a team survives an injury-laden year and makes the playoffs anyway, they're left with a lot of compelling depth the next season — as both the injured guys and their replacements return — and some hard decisions to make as they choose which of these platoons to put their faith in.
  3. I don't recall such a rule. Daniel Murphy played in the AFL back in 2008 after a 49-game debut in the majors. Kenny Kelly, as noted above, played AFL ball in 2001 after debuting briefly in the majors in 2000. So if there was such a rule, it hasn't been in place in a while. I imagine there's some limit on big league service time, but I also guess the teams know what the league is for, and don't see any profit in parking guys with a lot of big league experience there.
  4. A sidenote as we look at our roster: every shot of Jim Henderson seems to betray crooked neck syndrome. [fimg=100]http://l1.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/7N3mIeEqQrIxb3MrRjAgDw--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3NfbGVnbztpbD1wbGFuZTtxPTc1O3c9NjAw/http://media.zenfs.com/en/person/Ysports/jim-henderson-baseball-headshot-photo.jpg[/fimg] Every time I post this roster thingie, I worry about this man and suspect an undiagnosed disk issue.
  5. Colón's a free agent, so the issue there isn't particularly whether to keep him in the rotation, but whether to resign him at all. I imagine if they do sign him, it's to open the season in the rotation.
  6. Guys you send to Arizona include prospects learning a new position, guys who were injured much of the last year and need to catch up, guys who took a step forward the previous season and you need to see if it was a fluke, hitters on the fast track, and ... former Florida quarterbacks, as University of Florida's own Tim Tebow follows the path through the AFL blazed by University of Miami's Kenny Kelly. Mets who will be dodging scorpions in the Arizona include: Marcos Molina, top pitching prospect who was injured and never really got untracked in St. Lucie this year, going 1-5 with a 4.57 ERA in eight games (seven starts), walking 11 and striking out 36 in 41 1/3 innings. Corey Oswalt, coming off a hot 2015 in Savannah, but missed half the year for St. Lucie, going 4-2 with a 4.12 ERA in 14 games (13 starts), walking 18 and whiffing 68 in 67 2/3 innings. David Roseboom, a 2014 draftee and Binghamton reliever who turned his biting slider into a devastating season for Eastern League hitters, going 1-1 with a 1.87 ERA and 14 saves, throwing 57 2/3 innings, walking 18 and punching out 54. His secondary stuff is still questionable, last I czeched. Corey Taylor, a beneficiary of the Mets' Corey Advancement program, is the proverbial hard-throwing Texas righty, who basically was for St. Lucie what Roseboom was for Bingo, going 4-5 with a 1.87 ERA and 20 saves, tossing 53 innings, walking 13 and striking out 45. Corey had a full college career at Texas Tech, but those numbers only RAISE his professional ERA after he posted a 1.50 in his first year with Brooklyn. And his drafting was dismissed by some as a wasted pick to save money. Tomás Nido is a St. Lucie catcher who had a breakthrough year with the bat, hitting .320 with seven homers and 23 doubles in only 370 plate appearances. It's a good punt past anything he's ever done before, and he still doesn't walk much (19 on the season). But it's the kind of season that makes you want to test a player against higher competition. Gavin Cecchini was the 2012 Mets first round pick (12th overall) who did everything you can ask offensively for Las Vegas (.325 / .390 / .448 // .838), and kept right on hitting in (very) limited September duty with the Mets, but struggled at shortstop and is expected to see more time at second going forward. Champ Stuart is a Binghamton outfielder (called "Champ Summers" by Vic Sage) whose game is all wheels, excelling on defense and the basepaths, but posting a .525 OPS is not going to cut it in any league. And lastly, Tim Tebow is a 29-year-old jersey-selling mesomorph, who had the grace to demur when asked if he was interested in quarterbacking for the Patriots after Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a shoulder injury. His brief results in the Instructional League were mixed, but catching up after a dozen years is no picnic. I'd've guessed he was slated for low-A Columbia this season, and most AFL prospects will have at least reached high A and many have played at the top of the minor league ladder, so he will have his work cut out for him. Doubly lastly, managing this disparate crew for the Scottsdale Scorpions will be Mets first base coach Tom Goodwin. I expect he can give Tebow a crash course in baserunning and keep him out of any game action that he isn't yet ready for.
  7. 20 years ago today. Still no justice for Armando.
  8. The legendary Mike Puma reports that Terry and Sandy have met and Terry expects his staff back in its entirety next season. Projections below work with the assumption that David Wright and Zack Wheeler open the season on the disabled list or on a rehab assignment, but Harvey et al. will be ready for the opening bell. Obviously that's speculation and there's a lot more to be learned. That bright green font color isn't working. I need to swap that out. 9. Sure. That's sort of what I mean to imply by the whole post.

  11. The thing about Wright is that, most stars can't be bothered to manage after their playing career ends, as the whims of fate are most likely to damage their lofty legacies rather than enhance them, and they end up with a sour final chapter like Walter Johnson. Ask Cal Ripken. He'd do anything the Orioles ask him to do, except manage. But Wright may be looking at a very Mattingly-esque career trajectory, with the second half short circuited by back problems. Like Mattingly, he may see that the right managerial opportunity can raise his profile by giving him the second act his back never allowed him to have. I don't know what the future holds, but I'd've sent him out to coach first in Game 163.

I don't think there were many. Most people thought the Mets fleeced Toronto from day 1. It might have been feedback I got from UMDB visitors. I think there were some people here who were opposed, but I guess I'm not really sure of that. Great stuff here, including seemingly non-trade related stuff, such as foreboding about Zach Wheeler's elbow, and an early assessment of Dan Murphy as a closet-dweller: http://archives.thecranepool.net/18800/f1_t18863.shtml
  15. What's the argument for pulling him there? He didn't need to be pinch-hit for. He had thrown 108 pitches, 11 fewer than Bumgarner ultimately threw. He was still on top of the situation in the seventh with the big threat fueled by a cheapie infield hit. And the third out wasn't struck all that hard either. The drive to center was back in the sixth. He was the the best pitcher pitching the game of his life. Going to the bullpen while that is still available to you turns the contest into a game of Russian Roulette. If Bumgarner can go 9 or 10, an eighth shouldn't be treated as a no-brainer for Syndergaard. This is the whole season on the line. On the Loney play, he was closer to it than I remember but I guess my point here is that if the 2nd baseman can field you should let him. But he couldn't. Not in time, anyhow.
  16. Frayed Knot wrote: I didn't have a problem taking Syndergaard out when he did. The concept of always stretching your pitchers works until it doesn't as with Harvey last year. And it's not that I think Syndergaard's arm is going to fall off if he goes over 110 pitches (he was at 108) but at some point effectiveness can be expected to fall off and his final two innings were anything but smooth, involving 37 pitches, 2 hits, a walk, an SB, and that drive to CF that sent Granderson into the wall. Edgy MD wrote: Loney's indifferent wave at that infield hit has sealed his fate for me. I don't think he was anywhere near that ball. More a case of him straying too far than not far enough IMO. If anything I'd have preferred him to stay put and allow that to become a 4-3 putout rather than the more difficult, time-consuming, and ultimately unsuccessful, 4-to-1 attempt. He was in position to stretch out and grab it but instead pulled up and folded his arm, perhaps fearful that he was more likely to deflect it than field it. But was softly hit and eminently catchable. That's not a man stretching for a play.
  17. Frayed Knot wrote: I didn't have a problem taking Syndergaard out when he did. The concept of always stretching your pitchers works until it doesn't as with Harvey last year. Pull Harvey after the walk. There's a medium between pulling him with no indication of failure and riding him despite an indication of failure. That medium is where wisdom lies.
  18. Benjamin Grimm wrote: And even if Noah has to come out after seven, I think Reed should have stayed in and pitched the ninth inning. Right. Always get the max you can out of a succeeding pitcher. He'll sleep when he's dead.
  19. Syndergaard was yanked too early. Always stretch your successful pitchers in these games. Starters or relievers. Always. The next guy may. Not. Have it. Winter or Winters or whoever behind home plate was confounding on not giving the knee-high strike. The field level seats circling around all the way to the foul line behind the bases in left and right is a hateful design flaw that no stadium — and certainly not any stadium the Mets call home, should have. A man who knocks a ball down the line past the thirdbaseman is entitled to a standup double. Full stop. I intend to correct this injustice with strategically placed explosives during the offseason. Campbell was wishful thinking, wasn't it? Loney too, perhaps. The Reyes bouncer to second that advanced the runner? Young Reyes beats that out. Loney's indifferent wave at that infield hit has sealed his fate for me.
  20. This is where the Mets are best.
  21. Hunter Pence thinks Colorforms are art.
