Antitrust exemption or no, it's far from the most efficient way to turn some money into more money. Efficient? Maybe not, but I would bet that it's one of the more secure. Franchise sale prices have outstripped their alleged valuations for decades, and their valuation appreciation is continually impressive. And they are pretty much firewalled against failure.

Apparently he's still the only Arab-American to play in the big leagues. His Wikipedia page says he coaches at his alma mater and drives a cab in Tucson, although who knows how up to date that is. I checked the school's football and baseball pages and Sammy wasn't listed with either coaching staff.

That could really clear the runway to allow Dilson Herrera to land, although José Peraza is also looking for a position.

Oh, I believe it. What other industry gives you territorial exclusivity and an antitrust exemption? Franchises have crazy value. Even the Padres. Even the Rays. I wonder which one Jeffrey Loria will move to mess up next.

Highlight reel of Bartolo Colón's Met career, framed as a movie trailer. It's not really as clever as it thinks it is and is sort of made to sell his coming tenure with Atlanta, but you know, it's still a highlight reel of Bartolo Colón's Met career. [tweet:2hojdrzc] [/tweet:2hojdrzc]

Looks like a game where he's being yanked. And if it's one of his two starts, then he's being yanked before going five.

Do you think I'm correctly assuming that any runs scored from the free baserunner would go down as unearned? And logo creep is another seriously sketchy issue.

It'll be really interesting if Ynoa and Logan Verrett both manage to crack the Baltimore rotation after both being acquired for cash from the Mets this winter.

Well, they certainly need the roster spot, but there is a reported payroll crunch due to the inability to deal off Bruce or Granderson before signing Salas and Blevvy. A lot of articles the last two days have reported that Lagares is being shopped again. If this deal not only gets them a roster spot, but helps save Laggy's skin, then well played.

It's been so long since a player-for-cash transaction announcement included a dollar value that I don't know—even ballpark—how much is typically exchanged for a guy. Fifty thousand? Five hundred thousand? Two million? A possible side effect is that, to make room for Ynoa, the Orioles have DFA'd former Met farmhand and sluggo minor league catcher Francisco Peña, if you're shopping for catching depth. That's certainly the short-term benefit.

Organaization tries to simultaneously wiggle out of roster pinch and payroll pinch, dealing off short-time Met and current #7 or #8 starter to the Orioles for Norm Ca$h. I tells you, it's not unrelated to Trump. Crazy ideas get people talkin', and get folks tak'n' sides and get page clicks and point-counterpoint screaming matches on television, so sure, get behind some crazy shit. It's good for television. Nobody tunes in for discussions of the same-old-same-old! Make sure you quote that stupid chestnut about how insanity is doing the same way. Next thing you know, you wake up in the morning, Trump is president, players are starting innings on second base, Vin Diesel is running your local energy concern, Steve Harvey is on the Supreme Court, and we're all trying to talk Russian.' What happened to the grownups?

There's a lot of pressure ahead of Ty Kelly on the infield depth chart, and a lot pressure coming from behind. It's almost certainly healthier for his career if he's with another organization by the end of the weekend. But I sure hope he isn't. Funniest Met in a while. Nobody clued me in, but I've totally had Tim Teufel still on this grid up until now. Sorry, Sherlock. Asdrubal Cabrera hits for the cycle with this fantastic jeremiad against being left off of Venezuela's WBC roster, indicting Team Venezuela GM (and "[person]") Carlos Guillen while mostly giving a pass to the team's manager, Omar Vizquel “I will not participate in the World Baseball Classic because Carlos Guillen is the least serious and most deceitful [person] that may exist,” Cabrera said, according to a rough translation of remarks reported by ESPN. “What a shame that Omar Vizquel, with all the respect he deserves, is accepting all this scoundrel-ness.” http://nypost.com/2017/02/09/asdrubal-cabrera-is-furious-over-double-cross/ While those words may seem inadvisably impolitic, New York Post scribe Jonathan Lehman reports, that Cabrera was warned. He was given an explanation. Nevertheless, he persisted.

I thought it was pretty clear that this was an experiment with consideration of moving the rule up to higher levels. The odd part is that, while Rookie League and AFL games are games that, possibly more than most, give front offices night terrors of pitchers exceeding their pitch counts, they are also games with 35-man rosters. Sometimes more. And hey, Joe Torre, you know what we call it when backup infielders are called on to pitch? FUN! You ought to look into it.

The top two teams in each group advance. Pool A seems to be the softest, where South Korea stands out as the favorite, with Chinese Taipei a distant second. The toughest group seems to be Pool D, with Puerto Rico stacked and Venezuela always a threat, but Mexico a proud, competitive baseball nation that has depth, not just with MLB and MiLB players, but unknowns (to us) who toil in the Mexican League and NPB. My Daddy taught me to never, ever bet against Ollie Perez. [fimg=750]https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/bi7wl54ib05m0ujcfibg.png[/fimg]

Know what would make for fast pitching changes? A subterranean bullpen below the mound! Then, when you decide to make a change, the mound lowers into the ground, taking the failed pitcher with it, and then quickly raises back into place with a new guy.

Jeff Passan reporting that baseball is looking into experimenting with starting extra innings with a runner on second base. So now we have baseball run by people who hate baseball, and the country run by people who hate the country. Where am I anymore?

Yeah, I'm talking more about him being abstractly right, or generally right. With regard to his own situation, get healthy and pitch. How it works out from there is a few bridges down the road.

Those cases typically involved an organization change and/or a return to the minors. Anywutz, I'm betting Wheeler starts the season in St. Lucie on a rehab assignment.

I do too, but I understand his trepidations.

But they don't tend to force their way back into the rotation. Parnell didn't. Heilman didn't. Mejia didn't. Familia didn't. They came up, didn't immediately perform as starters—at least, not consistently enough to lock down the job—and found themselves in the pen. And no matter how well they performed, their chances as starters ran dry very quickly. They became locked into a role and the next guy and the next guy got the starting opportunities.

Essentially, two dominoes need to fall. How you want to effect that is the question.

When they signed Granderson, I figured that his job was to hold his position until Nimmo took it away. That still hasn't happened. I additionally calculate if and when a position opens up—perhaps through a Bruce divestment—then Conforto moves into a platoon with Lagares, giving us an outfield of Céspedes-Conforto/Lagares-Granderson. This may also work with Granderson sliding over to center against lefties and Conforto taking his corner spot. When another opening comes up—perhaps through an injury or Granderson being overtaken—Conforto becomes a corner outfielder and Nimmo becomes the lefthanded-hitting half of the centerfield platoon and the leadoff hitter of the future that he was born to be. Eventually that job becomes all his, I think. Perhaps this doesn't all shake out until 2018, perhaps it happens within a week. Maybe Granderson ends his Met career as a pinch-hitting terror.
