  2. If this is so mathematically established, I wish folks would cite the studies that support their positions.
  3. I don't get this at all from the Brewers perspective. Why sign somebody likely worse than Shaw at free agent $$ when you have Shaw at cost control. And then deal him for two question marks coming off DL-laden seasons? What's the deal? Isn't Shaw the sort of guy they should be building around? Spending their Mousakas money on a pitcher and an outfielder that brings a little more guaranteed than Wheeler and Lagares? Beyond that ... regarding that last post above mine ... please explain. Wheeler in the pen is more valuable than Shaw? Shaw got four WAR last season from baseball-reference, and a more conservative 3.4 from fangraphs. Wheeler — who has never particularly pitched out the pen, coming off two full missed seasons from Tommy John surgery followed by less than a half season, having his effort cut short by recurring tendonitis and a "stress reaction" — is somehow automatically more valuable if given a relief role? And this is so obvious as to categorize detractors as "drunk"? I'm not seeing it.
  4. I used the phrase "something like," did I not? The job of forum pedant is taken, and it won't be available until I'm dead!
  5. That list also presumes they are carrying an eight-man bullpen, but I certainly hope they don't.
  6. Smith's the one who reached AA. He could come quick, probably in 2018, but probably not out of camp. I just double-checked. He DID pitch one inning in AAA while with the Tampa Bay system (the second of three organizations he was part of last year). So he's got that going for him.
  7. A good chance one might, probably one of the two who debuted last year. Rhame or Callahan. Only one of the remaining flock played as high as AA last season.
  8. MLB.com has Crick has Reynolds as their #4 and Crick as their #16. The Mets equivalent would be something like Thomas Szapucki and Anthony Kay. As Mets #4 Szapucki is currently recovering from TJ surgery, I'm tempted to reach up to #3 or down to #5 for an analog, but #3 for the Mets is Andres Gimenez and #5 is Desmond Lindsay, and their in two very different places. MLB.com stuck Sza at #4 despite his surgery so I think that's the imaginary trade that would be comparalbe, but feel free to stick Lindsay in there instead and both are outfielder/pitcher packages.
  9. Adrian Gonzalez has been signed for a single season, apparently at or near the big league minimum. Tell us how you feel now to lend credibility to your feelings later. 10. I was gonna play Desi Relaford, but I see he's already in the clubhouse.
  11. BLUNDER is terrific. They turn his nickname on it's ear, just as is called for by the story. Turning WONDER into BLUNDER may feel cheap and obvious elsewhere, but there's nothing cheap about it here, not on this day. He earned it. They work the backup head NATIONAL DISASTER into the subhead. That SHOULD have been the story. But Syndergaard's demigod pride actually made things worse, and they recognized that was the real lede. The Mets didn't just lose the game, their season died that day, way earlier than it should have. Look at Ray Ramirez' enormous watch! Ray is in exactly the scurrying, helpful-yet-useless position you expect eager mortals to be in when trying to support the grave work of giant superheroes. It's right out of the movies. He's Clark Gregg or Giovanni Ribisi or somebody. They took the time to set 23-5 in red with a white outline. While lamenting Thor's pride-before-a-fall and the extended leave that you anticipate it will all cost, let's not forget how historically bad this loss was. The Daily News wasn't about to let you. The Daily News #1 medallion, bumped almost completely off the page because they don't want to cover anything else. GOD OF BLUNDER is the Mets Tabloid Cover of the Year and you all know it.
  12. The New Year's Day Effect is in full swing.
  13. I like how Fredbird's tipping his pitches and Mister Met knows it.
  14. I tend to think most lefty specialists go a little high in the walk rate. When you come on to face a middle-of-the-order hitter with a tying or winning run on base, it's often better that he gets away from you via a walk than a hit. It's certainly less than ideal, as it makes the crisis thicker, but the runner doesn't score and you can still get the next guy. Look at Tim Byrdak. Modestly effective LOOGy pitcher with the Mets, while walking a whopping 4.8 guys per nine. Anyhow, I'm just giving Regnault as an example of how it's often best to seek bonuses like a second effective lefty by crowdsourcing. I'm not married to him or nothin'.
  15. [fimg=450]https://cdn.newsday.com/polopoly_fs/1.10474332.1432658825!/httpImage/image.JPG_gen/derivatives/display_960/image.JPG[/fimg] You know I'm in, Bro. Bump me.
  16. Yeah, Gonzalez would definitely give Alonso time to catch up. Alonso seemed to have 80% of his value wrapped up in his power, with Smith giving you more fallback skills — contact hitting, strike zone control, and fielding. But Alonso's breakthrough year seems to suggest he can be a more well-rounded hitter, if still a load on defense. But you've still gotta get Smith some PT to evaluate from. And I kind of like the idea of breaking two young players (like him and Rosario) into the lineup at once. Yeah, it gives you two areas instead of one that could be holes until they get their acts together. But I tend to think they can help take the heat off each other.
  17. This shouldn't be that big a deal. Gonzalez falls on his face and after a month he's gone. Or maybe he becomes a pinch-hitter and if he continues to hack, is gone after a second month. I'm still treating it like a grave choice. Maybe the plan all along is to treat him as a backup. I don't know, but until I hear otherwise, I think the Mets have bumped him to the top. 18. Interesting that five out of 11 votes so far suggest that the 2018 season will begin, like Rocky Balboa, with no sign of Adrian.
  19. I checked box number three, but it's only after I hovered over one and two. The future is shielded from me. Love the Trump boycott.
  20. I'm not a fan of this deal, but I think deals like this improve ballclubs alla time. Alla time! Affirmative dealing!
  21. As the Mets add Adrian Gonzalez to the roster, they perhaps create more questions than they answer. Carrying two firstbasemen (and only firstbasemen) on the roster at once is not unheard of in 2018, but it's certainly a departure. In the National League, anyhow. So how are they going to go forward? Maybe even they don't know at this moment. But you do. One of you, anyhow. So let us know in the poll above and in your lucid arguments below. Thanks for your participation. Please take a sticker when you're done. [fimg=400]https://cdn3.volusion.com/gmbgz.pcthu/v/vspfiles/photos/50873-2T.jpg[/fimg]
  22. Kyle Regnault flew throught minors last year, kicking ass in St. Lucie, Bingo, and Las Vegas as the year progressed. I bet he gets a spring invite.
  23. Three Thoughts on Adrian Gonzalez 1) While the price suggests little downside to signing Gonzo, there's always a value in a roster spot, and assuming he's coming in on a major league deal (which isn't clear from reports, but is seemingly what's going down), the Mets are going to have to move somebody or try to push someone through waivers. That's in addition to the guy who will have to be cleared to make way for Jay Bruce. Brace yourselves, Kevin McGowan fans! 2) Below I have AG displacing Gavin Cecchini on the major league roster. But it seems near as likely that he will bump Cecchini's fellow top draft pick Dom Smith down to AAA for the time being. I don't think the Mets have been bad with their draft picks in the Alderson era, so much as they lack faith in them. 3) When it all comes down, I think there's a pretty good chance that Gonzalez will be no more of a Met than Glenn Davis or Andres Gallaraga — fellow veteran first sackers with giant guns brought into St. Lucie as a hedge and as a curious sideshow, but left behind in Florida when the team breaks camp. He's apparently headed to the major league roster, so that's something, but a guarantee it's not. 24. Also the most recent (that is, most recently active) ump in the Hall of Fame. The only guy enshrined since Harvey was Hank O'Day, who worked from 1895-1927. O'Day worked ten World Series (second only to Doug Harvey), and also played for seven years. They've taken a pass on an ump who was larger than life and more famous than half the players (Dutch Rennert); an ump who lost his career, most of his ability to walk, and nearly his life in an act of selfless heroism (Steve Palermo); and an ump who came out as gay (Dale Scott). I think what I'm saying is Harvey may be the last Hall of Fame ump we get for a long time. Between the rise of video review and the falling of the status (my impression) of umpiring that has both precipitated and followed video review, I don't think anybody is in a hurry to enshrine a guy in blue. Plus, Harvey was "The Lord." That's status!
  25. Drunk-Texts to Duda would make a really good blog or social media profile or whatever a Tumblr is.
