DH G1 IGT 08/16 - Mets at Phillies - BOC (not that one)

Watching Mark Leiter, Jr., I'm remembering some ambitious MoFo poster who wanted to start a new tradition, so that every time Al Leiter started, the crowd would greet him by all lighting cigarette lighters together. Love that phielding support the Phillie pitchers are getting. -

I had a guy sitting a section over — a grown-ass man, mind you — who was doing PA announcer cosplay. Every time there was a player substitution, he stood up, put his home-made fake microphone to his mouth, and bellowed out the change. "Your attention please! Now pitching for the Mets! Number 39! JERRY BLEVINS!" . Imagine if you told that guy he's basically no different than the guy who dressed up as Robin Hood and goes to the Renn Faire, just different mediums? Maybe he's the same guy. Also, I kneeled for the anthem and didn't get thwacked. -

Game ephemera: Entering the park, there was the typical tee-shirt giveaway. After I collected my léine, a dude approached me with obviously died hair. "Hey you're a Met fan?" he asked. "Are you going to be keeping that shirt. I was hoping to get an extra one for my niece." "No, I'm going to hang onto it. Besides, it's an extra large." "That's cool. That's cool." I then proceed to the bathroom. While I'm doing the happy work of relieving myself, I curse myself for thinking everything's a scam. So I finish up, wash up (always wash up!), walk out, look back up the concourse, and he's working the same spot. I figured somebody would have hooked him up by now. Met fans are nice! But there he is. And I notice he has a picnic-sized satchel behind him. SCAM!! Clearly he's collecting dozens of these for resale. I will need to have me a word with the authorities. Good crowd for a team in the midst of an historically bad season. Also, a lot of mixed couples and families wearing both Mets and Orioles gear. Peace and brother- and sisterhood are wonderful things. Kid to my right was from Staten Island, vacationing in Baltimore. Nice! Who knew? In front of me was a large man wearing a Mets-40 home jersey with BIG SEXY in place of the name. I dream of someday having that kind of confidence. That kind of comfort in my skin. I hope I don't hit 300 pounds before I get there. I was seated under the press box. A great vantage point to watch a game in a park where most everywhere is a great vantage point to watch a game. You know how some folks, realizing how outre it is to dress like their favorite player, attempt a flanking maneuver and dress like an umpire or something? I had a guy sitting a section over — a grown-ass man, mind you — who was doing PA announcer cosplay. Every time there was a player substitution, he stood up, put his home-made fake microphone to his mouth, and bellowed out the change. "Your attention please! Now pitching for the Mets! Number 39! JERRY BLEVINS!" It was amusing enough, I guess, as my wife kept telling me through gritted teeth, "DON'T make eye contact!" Baltimore, baby! Speaking of desperate-for-attention superfans, PIN MAN was in the house. Took me about 10 minutes to explain to my wife what his whole deal was. Opposite-field hitting. Situational hitting. Hitting against the shift, right from the get-go. Weird. Only Conforto was flailing like a Met. When Chris Davis knocked a one hopper off of the wall in right, Orioles fans sort of laughed. Not only did he turn a double into a single with his non-running ability, but a single is such a rarity for the clout-or-a-whiff Davis, that everybody was sure that actual baserunning was a novelty act for the big galoot. There was about 18 square feet in the rightfield corner that was invisible to us. On one of the Mets triples, Orioles rightfielder Adam Jones disappeared into that corner, and we had no idea what happened to him. It seemed like he bought some stamps, met a girl, got her number, signed a few autographs, and checked out some travel brochures before the ball finally came out of the corner, but there was enough time for an inside-the-parker. I used the tee-shirt to clean up a mess of ice-cream. -
Acuña is cranking out homers like nobody's business. Ureña decides to confront the issue in the douchiest way possible.

With tonight's win, the Mets catch and pass Cincinnati, putting them (YAY!) at the top of the National League's lower class, ahead of the Reds, the Padres, and the bottom-dwelling Marlins. The long climb up to middle class begins tomorrow in Phillie, with the Mets sitting 7 1/2 games behind the Nats, playing the Cardinals in St. Louis. Catch Washington, and it'll be like you're almost respectable.

A five-for-five night. Don't cha stop if it makes you feel good.

José Reyes is at .199. A hit in his next at-bat, and he's off the Interstate. In fact, a hit in any of his next four at-bats, and he is, finally, off the Interstate. Get on that, José. Dominic Smith is at .183. A recall and a hit in each of his next two at-bats, and he is off the Interstate. Tomás Nido is at .159. He needs a hit in each of his next three at-bats. José Lóbaton is at .152. To escape the Interstate, José also needs to hit safely in three consecutive at-bats, after also getting called up. Actually he even has to b added back onto the roster. Hey, remember when these two were our catching staff? Phil Evans is barrel scraping all the way down at .143. But he's had few enough at-bats that two consecutive hits will do it. Ty Kelly, if you want to move past your .091 and get back to the Interstate, then you need two consecutive hits for the Mets, after first hitting your way back out of the Pacific Coast League. Kevin Kaczmarski, you do NOT want to end your season with a .000 batting average. Fortunately for you, that .000 is just an 0-4. Get back to the bigs, get a hit in your next at-bat, and YOU are off the Interstate. Matt den Dekker, it won't be so easy for you, with a .000 that persists after 18 trips to the plate. Are you trying to threaten the team's non-pitcher futility record? Even Chin-Lung Hu went 1-for-20. But you want to be BETTER than that! You want off the Interstate! For that, Matt, you're going to need to get back on the 40, get back in the majors, and then, you know, hit your way on base five times without making an out. I'm pulling for you, Matt. Hell, I'm pulling for you all.

Ride a Painted Pony: Binghamton Rumble Ponies in 2018
Edgy MD replied to Edgy MD's topic in New York Mets Talk
While several Mets affiliates have been playing strong ball the last month or so, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies haven’t really been one. Having one five of their last 10, including the last three, they can generously be said to be treading water. But it’s late in the season, last chance to get swimming, and they just haven’t found their stroke since the promotions of Jeff McNeil and Peter Alonso and the disabling of Tim Tebow. One player that hasn’t caught the mehs has been new addition Will Toffey. The lefty-swinging third baseman with the Dickensian name has really caught some traction in his first 20 games in the Mets organization since coming over from Oakland in the Jeurys Familia trade. Will’s batting average has gone as high as .311, but his overall line is holding steady at .286 / .458 / .460 // .918. Not bad for a highly sought-after hockey prospect. Also taking a step forward as the scenery has changed has been Franklyn Kilomé, the tall, athletic right-hander who came from Phillies in the Asdrubal Cabrera trade. Frankie had a 4.24 ERA as a Reading Phightin' Phil, but in his first 18 2/3 innings as a Pony, he’s produced a 2.95 figure, including no homers. Yup! He’s a member of the No-Homers Club! Back from Vegas and still providing smoke from a distant fire out of the bullpen has been Joshua Torres. Josh’s 1.15 ERA in 30 appearances (39) games should get your motor runnin’, and his 50 strikeouts in only 39 innings while walking only 13 should make you head out on the highway. And I BET that him throwing those 39 inning while giving up — again — NO homers has you looking for adventure and whatever’s coming your way, but the real cool thing about Josh is that 8–0 record. Yeah, pitching wins are deceptive. But only Zack Brown of the Biloxi Shuckers (and just playing pro baseball at all is impressive when you're fronting your own band on a summer tour) has a record that is more impressively pure (9–0) so I’m going to point that shit out. When Josh comes out the pen, his team WINS. Winning more consistently has been a bugbear though. Their opener yesterday against the Akron Rubber Ducks was rained out (which is bullshit, because ponies can swim and rubber ducks can float), so the Ponies remain jammed in a tie for fourth with the Hartford Yard Goats in the Eastern League Eastern Division but get out this week to see them during their homestead, and I bet you’ll see them make some serious hay. Get out Saturday August 8 and the first 1,000 fans will receive an Amed Rosario King of New York Bobble Head (reserve yours, which has somehow made it to Citi Field despite being embargoed in Binghamton. And shit. Too much Vargas.

Eighty-two pitches on his ledger, with the bottom of the lineup coming up in the seventh. You think they try to stick with him?

And that strategy blows up. I forgot to mention — as historically awful as the O's offense has been, they've been slugging it since the All-Star Break.

You're missing some Metball, you non-posters. Mets have come from behind (again!) to take a 2-1 lead. Vargy has completed five innings, but I imagine [crossout:1u3q6dkb]Jerry[/crossout:1u3q6dkb] [crossout:1u3q6dkb]Terry[/crossout:1u3q6dkb] Mickey wants him to stretch a little bit and do the pen a favor. Be the innings gobbler he was meant to be. That may be courting fire, but hey, his ERA is down to 8.08. Maybe they'll pull him if he can get it under 8.00.
