  1. How so? I mean, he clearly wouldn't represent deGrom (or Syndergaard or Céspedes) anymore. Any kickback he'd get if he signed one of 'em to an overly generous contract would clearly be illegal and hard to hide.
  2. It's certainly not taking the long view, but I'd hope there'd be some benefit with regard to signing Jacob deGrom if they hire his agent to run the team.
  3. I think the same thing about De Jon Watson. Actually, I wondered it about Willie Randolph, but now I don't.
  4. I wonder if that background will include reaching out to Bill Singer.
  5. Connie Mack's son Earle managed Connie's Athletics for parts of two seasons in the late 30's. Dick Sisler managed the Reds for a few years in the early sixties, while his Hall of Fame dad George skippered the mid-20s Browns. Also, Bob and Joel Skinner.
  6. More importantly, Scottsdale is now 6-4 and tied for first, with Desmond Lindsay (.364 / .417 / 1.000 // 1.417) and Peter Alonso (.306 / .390 / .611 // 1.001) among their leading hitters. Stephen Nogosek has given up no runs and one hit in 3 2/3 innings over three appearances.
  7. I guess he's succeeded Tim McGraw as the world's biggest Metspring.
  8. Baby Smitty was a beneficiary of the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California. Though the academy has only been open since 2006, alumni that have made it the big leagues include Anthony Gose, Trayvon Robinson, Aaron Hicks, Efren Navarro, J. P. Crawford, Dillon Tate, Hunter Greene, and (of course) Smith. This name "Yoenis Céspedes" keeps appearing on rosters that I skim. Can you tell me anything about him?
  9. Adrian Gonzalez has Ps. 27:1 emblazoned on his bats. [list:2ab59j1z]The Lord is my light and my salvation— [list:2ab59j1z] whom shall I fear?[/list:u:2ab59j1z]The Lord is the stronghold of my life— [list:2ab59j1z] of whom shall I be afraid?[/list:u:2ab59j1z][/list:u:2ab59j1z] He is totally not a whore for Trump. Tell me some shit about Asdrubal Cabrera.
  10. Mr. Peebles, as usual, wanted too much $$.
  11. I think it's very much an Alderson thing that, if he was going to spend semi-big, to try and hedge his bets by signing a guy that was fungible, that you can move around the field or around the lineup as needs change over the course of his contract. If that philosophy endures, Muffin Man would qualify.
  12. WtF did they do to my scoreboard?!
  13. Sorry, that last postberry of mine was meant for a different thread.
  14. Chris Beck was brought in on the recommendation of manager Mickey Callaway, who presumably got a good look when he was coaching for Cleveland and Beck was trying to stick with the division rival Chicago White Sox. Golfer Chip Beck was a three-time Ryder Cup team member, starring for the US squad in 1991, but he later missed 46 consecutive PGA Tour cuts from 1997 to 1998 and eventually left the tour to sell insurance. How about that Jerry Blevins.
  15. Or perhaps keep 100% of her father-in-law from voting on the mainland.
  16. I'm certain they can do plenty without a GM. And so can we.
  17. Patrick Corbin has pretty nerdy name. He also had 246 strikeouts this season which I have come to understand is a lot. That's the way you go into free agency. I mean, yeah, it's a career season, but he missed 2014 with TJ surgery, and perhaps he's only just now rounding into full form, putting up his first All-Star year since the year before he got cut open. He's a lefty from the Syracuse area, so I'm expecting fman to act as a recruiter a little bit. He lives and dies by the slider, and mostly he's been living and living the high life. I also expect the Yankees to make a run at him, so if the Mets want to be in the game, they may have to bid a little. He was every bit as good as his rotation-mate Zack Greinke this season, and possibly better, and Greinke is on a Hall of Fame track. Corbin. Waddaya think? [fimg=650:3aajnd0t]http://images.performgroup.com/di/library/sporting_news/22/67/patrick-corbin-042518-getty-ftrjpg_onayajzybktr1rcqg0xcgd8hu.jpg?t=-59901430&w=960&quality=70[/fimg:3aajnd0t]
  18. The Mets deployed 56 players in 2018, the most in their long history. Some ground it out through the whole year, while not a few others had more of an ephemeral Mets season, appearing out of the midst and then dissolving like Brigadoon. It's like the world conspired so you never had a chance to get to know them at all. And that's why we have this thread. To Meet the 2018 Mets, as we go down the list and state one fact about each. Tyler Bashlor, for instance, totally pulled a Matz, getting drafted and then tearing his UCL shortly after, missing two full seasons with Tommy John surgery. In fact, when he got drafted by the Mets, he was excited because he thought he'd soon be playing for his home town in Savannah. By the time he finally got back on the field, the Mets had switched their South Atlantic affiliate to Columbia. Give me a fact about (checking the roster) Buddy Baumann.
  19. I like the philosophy, but amn't sure that Eovaldi is going to be the man. Patrick Corbin, maybe? But this sort of hostile takeover maneuver may call for looking beyond the available free agent market and getting creative with a trade. It was the trade market that brought in Viola on top of Gooden, Saberhagen on top of Gooden, Hampton on top of Leiter, and Santana on top of Martinez.
  20. There's certainly something impolitic — if you're the assistant GM for the Astros or head of scouting and development for the Twins and some writer asks if you'd be interested in the Mets job if you were offered it — in saying, "Would I?! Fuck, YES!" If the Mets haven't actually called, you'd be poisoning the well with your own bosses, and if they had, you'd be more circumspect so as not to compromise your status with either team and the folks you don't even know yet who you'll be working for next year. That said, there's certainly a solid argument for the management to get on the same page as far as organizational structure before undertaking the search in earnest. But often, and organization will tailor that to the person, too, and try and reconcile their vision with his.
  21. d'Kong76 wrote: I apologize to FK, in my haste I EDITED his post instead of QUOTING it. I'll try and fix things later when I get back on. Sorry. OE: Sorry again, FK's added comment above italics is missing. That was such an Edgy move.
  22. Just to clarify, is this a good way or a bad way to be raising a kid? [youtube:35c3lhvn]pzXL-KM2UqU[/youtube:35c3lhvn]
  23. Of course, Namor can be kind of a dick.
  24. Yeah, I think it's more likely that the AAA club got the Mets tag while the AA team lost it is due which team is owned/controlled by the Mets organization. OE: What he said.
  25. Nope, the Braves are now affiliated with The Gwinnett Stripers. The only International League club sharing the parent club's nickname is the Pawtucket Red Sox, but I think they were called the Paw Sox for a while and are probably still called that unofficially. The Indianapolis Indians, of course, share a nickname with a big-league club, but not the one with which they are affiliated (The Pittsburgh Pirates). In the Pacific Coast League, you have two that share the parent club's nickname (The Oklahoma City Dodgers and The Iowa Cubs) and one that sort of does (The Memphis Redbirds).
