I don't understand it at all. He's almost constantly in development mode or protective love mode, and doesn't seem to realize his continued Metly existence is based on putting on a display of what win mode might look like. He doesn't seem stupid. But that seems kind of stupid.

As well as Tug McGraw, Tommie Agee, Donn Clendenon, Cal Koonce, Ed Charles ... But hey, Krane and Harrelson will make it, and that's certainly not nothing.

I wonder if they're going to make J.D. Davis available.

if not Flexen, then who? I think the manager should have asked that and come up with an answer. Sure bets obviously aren't available. Wiser ones were, though. While I'd have taken anybody else, Familia would have topped my list, with Gagnon second. I actually like Flexen, but he was set up to fail. Also, I think it's painting yourself into a corner to announce publicly before the game who is or isn't available. It also gives an advantage to the opposition.

When the staff at Mets Roster Central falls behind in their updates, and the Mets roll over like turds, MRC tends to blame themsleves. We regret the error. That fanfare at the top would make some chilling entrance music, wouldn't it? But Guy's from the Midwest and Bill's from New England, so I'm guessing no.

[th]Infielder[/th][td90][/td90][td90]Nick Conti[/td90][td90]2/14/97[/td90][td90]R/R[/td90] Turns out that Nick is the grandson of Guy Conti, the Mets' second-coolest bullpen coach ever and currently a senior advisor.

Well, I would question the wisdom of any team with any bullpen pulling Font after three no-hit innings, in a tie game in the eighth, in order to replace him with a pitcher just up from the minors, who hadn't had any success yet in several previous promotions. I realize leaving Font in would've required letting him bat to lead off an inning, but the Flexen move was an absurd way to approach a tie game in the eighth.

Yup. https://cdnph.upi.com/pv/upi/5c1339d1cd76626961b1d16c5fa479e7/MLB-BREWERS-CARDINALS.jpg> I think I saw it somewhere else on his person, too. Looks like MFS has fused the DNA of Garry Templeton and Terry Pendleton and created a monstrous double-Y chromosome hybrid.

My eyeball scouting report says Diaz' slider has plenty of action, but not a lot of consistent location. Of course, his adventure was pitching in the monsoon may have created a disproportionate impression. As for Familia, I don't know if i've seen his splitter make an appearance yet. I loved that pitch. I suspect it's being shelved by a lot of pitchers because it's associated — with or without the data to back it up — with career-risking injury. It probably wouldn't take long to muster the data to suggest that a six ERA is also pretty risky to a career. The splitter is pretty outré now, isn't it?

Alonso has homered in three straight series. But it would be eight straight if he didn't get shut out of the Arizona series. I have no idea how to look up that sort of record.

But the two were born 27 years apart, both in California ... which isn't proof, but quite likely. Good ear. Brad is https://www.milb.com/milb/news/blue-rocks-pounders-wins-moniker-madness/c-92074768indeed his dad. It may be selling Pounders Senior a little short to call him AAAA, though. He starred as a minor leaguer and flew through. He was on the verge of the big leagues and on the Pads' 40-man roster when back surgery derailed the whole magilla. As a corner infielder, he named his son after Brooks Robinson. He was, in fact, set to fully name him Brooks Robinson Pounders, when Mom put her foot down, so he settled for the more Metly moniker of Brooks Casey Pounders. https://mediadownloads.mlb.com/mlbam/2016/07/07/images/mlbf_903023683_th_48.jpg>

Yeah, risk abounds, and this baseball team is riskier than most, but ... not for a single inning did I think the Cards had the better team this series. I think there's some assheaded stuff going on, though. I have no FU to Flexie. It's bizarre that he was put in that situation, though.

Not at all.

First Brooks in Metly history.

I think so. Strange time to turn to Flexie.

This has been a dumpstertastic job by Font.

Damn, Canoe. Just squeeze in that situation.

So ... not a dumpster fire?

I don't agree with that definition of "dumpster fire."

Should've gone for the lead runner, Vargy.

The Mets' hats look like they were originally royal blue but were made with bad dye and the players are sweating through them.

Bader is fun. He's always throwing after the lead runner, whether he has a chance or not, and he's always offline to the left. The stupidity of his throw is what put the go-ahead run in scoring position for the Mets, and now the Mets are ahead.

I agree. But baseball is rife with these stylistic dilemmas and the standard changes regularly. Almost all of the issues are related to compound words.
