Yup. And it's the old type of porn, from when they cared about things like character and atmosphere.

The Mets really wanted him to make the team, giving him chances against opponents' A-teams right up until the end of Spring Training, and his numbers just got worse and worse. Somebody (possibly Dave Eiland) clearly saw something that wasn't showing up in games. In the end, it pretty much never did, at least at the big league level. Also, it was his callup that necessitated the Mets facing the grim reality of putting Jed Lowrie on the 60-Day Injured List.

Chance to go over .500 in the Vulture Era.

https://secure.milb.com/assets/images/9/1/4/306310914/cuts/1280x720/cut.JPG> The trip to Hickory was seeming to be the answer. Four games and four rainouts. If the clouds would just stay with them, it could wash out the remaining week on The Columbia Fireflies' schedule, and allow them to start fresh in the second half. But no such luck spared them. And as well rested as they were, they would go on to lose two of three vs. Ashevile, and then fell in a massive beatdown of a four-game sweep by visiting Lexington, closing out the dreadful first half with five straight losses, finishing the first semester with a dreadful 24-42 / .364 record, good for dead fucking last in The South Atlantic League Southern Division. But hey, new beginnings are what second halves are for, right? So they enjoyed their three-day All-Star break, freshened up a little bit, and then headed on out to Asheville to enjoy a fresh start. Things were even looking good after they took the early lead after one when Wagner Lagrange singled home a run. And then it happened. Despite the presence on the mound of Willy Taveras, who had had a pretty solid first half, the roof caved in and then the rains followed. Two runs in the second, three each in the third and fourth. The runs piled on the heads of The Fireflies, one after th eother. When the dust had cleared, The Tourists were walking away with a 26-9 victory. Just about as footbally as you can get. Augusta even put a 10-spot in the seventh. Our alleged heroes four homers, a triple, and nine doubles. NINE! About the only fun that can come out of situation like this is the small (small) consolation that, hey, maybe a position player will get to take the mound. And so it was, as thirdbaseman Brian Sharp crossed over to the hill to get the final two outs. He gave up a hit and a walk, but somehow managed to get out of the inning without another run crossing. Lest it go unsaid, he was the only Columbia pitcher on the day without a blemish on his record, although the six runs second pitcher Bryce Hutchinson gave up were all counted as unearned. He took the loss anyway. So, as far ways to open the second half, that's just some soggy Wheaties right there. Soggy Wheaties with broken glass. So, it was something of an impressive turnabout to take yesterday's follow up at the more basebally score of 6-3 in 10 innings. (Field goal in overtime?). Alec Kisena, signed this offseason out of The Frontier League garnered his first win in affiliated ball with two shutout innings, Hickory self-destructed in the 10th, and Billy Oxford finished up for the save. José Butto has been the most effective starter of late, usually good for the ol' six-innning, two-run job that'll keep his team in the game. He's put up a 2.78 ERA over his last four starts, including a six-inning, one-hit outing. He's whiffed 66 and walked only 17 in his 64 2/3 innings, so don't let his 4.45 overall ERA fool you. Speaking of Josés, with the better relievers all promoted to St. Lucie, José Moreno has emerged as a key piece of the pen. Having allowed only three runs in his last ten outings, covering 11 innings. His overall ERA sits at 2.63 through 24 innings, having only allowed one homer. José has a twin brother Angel playing centerfield in the Cardinal system, so if this pitching thing doesn't work out, he has options — at least, genetically. Until then, the batting has to be done by the batsmen. And All-Star (and top prospect) Ronny Mauricio continues to improve as the season progresses. The Ronnyknocker has celebrated his All-Star selection by hitting .333 / .362 / .556 // .917 over his last 10. Like many young, high-potential shortstops the Mets have pushed through the system in recent years, he still needs to learn to take a walk. Also, like many shortstops of recent vintage, Mauricio is tall. If you've seen how José Reyes and Amed Rosario have played balls close to the ground in recent seasons, you understand how that can be a concern. For what it's worth, Mo-Mo went 1-2 with a double in last week's South Atlantic League All-Star Game as the 'Flies only representative. Incredibly, despite the dramatic run differential, the Fireflies 1-1 record leaves them in a five-way tie for first place in The South Atlantic League Southern Division. Their hoping to get ahead of that bottleneck as they play the final game in Ashville today. Willy Taveras goes The Tourists' most endangered pitcher, the 1-7 / 7.34-ERA'd Alfredo Garcia. If you step on it, you can still get down to North Carolina in time for the 6:05 start. Four and a third scoreless by the shmullpen, plus Pounders left a runner stranded when he came on for Vargas.

That high fastball to Carrot Top was Díaz' best pitch in about three weeks.i

Depends on how much faith you've lost or retain in your alternative. Once was the time when it wasn't automatic to pinch-hit for the starter with eight innings under his belt in that situation.

Stay with it, Loogie.

I wonder if a new pitching coach and new pitching strategist and a new bullpen coach will lead to a review of the Mets' kid-gloves-for-Lugo policy.

Mets taking the lead. Hopefully they can hold on, even after going to the pen early. Lunchy's games have been much better for him than last year.

It struck me last night that a better title track for this thread would have been "Hard for Me to Say I'm Sorry."

Lots of folks may be scrapping the splitter, but Darvish isn't. And Conforto don't give a damn.

An umpsterfuck is going on right here. But it was a swing and miss. McNeil may be getting better as the season progresses. Unfortunately, it may be asking too much of him to become an MVP.

It's actually in order of their fWAR. The top of the list has guys who turned their 25 homers into an MVP-quality season. The guys at the bottom, despite their modestly impressive home run output, were very often sub-replacement-level players overall. And you may notice that there was a second Mets player who finished the season with exactly 25 homers, but the first four came with the Astros, before being traded to the Mets.

I think you just figured out who to adopt.

By the way, can we pause a moment and give proper credit to bmfc for an outstanding thread title?

Alonso is on the pace of exactly one homer every three games. And he's back at the Kiner Threshhold. And he beginning is the ending. Mets outplayed, and Lockett wasn't the answer. But the home plate umping sure was smelly. Nice to see Font put up another good showing, but I need to see some winnums.

Right up to the ninth, we're getting strikes from the neck to the shins.

Umpty Dumpty has been calling a massive strike zone.

My God, Regan looks 99.
