"In pursuit of team unity this spring, David Wright used the off-day Monday to organize a trip to the movies for all the players still in camp. Delegated to choose the movie for the outing, Daniel Murphy selected Call Me by Your Name."

Healey: Morning, Mick. That the crossword? Callaway: Yeah, I need a five-letter word for "Get the fuck out of my locker room." Healey: Always a pleasure, Skipper.

Previous conversations on record between Callaway and Healey: Healey: Hey, Mick. How's your day going? Callaway: Go fuck yourself, Tim. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Healey: Yo, Mick, have you seen the new Toy Story? Callaway: Yeah, I went with your mother, Douchebag. She didn't watch. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Healey: Thanks for your time, Mickey. Callaway: Yeah? How 'bout you come back and say that while you're eating my ass out, you fucking little shit!

August 26, 1989, Jeff Mussleman (#13) relieved Ron Darling (#12). This, of course, falls short if Darling had already done his in-season swap to #15.

The Vargas situation is as old as organizational psychology itself. Guy whose job security is most tenuous attempts to demonstrate his value by acting as the manager's heavy. I'd call it the Shelly Duncan Rule, but it flourishes most obviously in the NHL. -

So, we have an official statement released by the organization, and a personal call from Wilpon. Have Callaway or Vargas apologized yet? -

Our staff represents our organization to members of the press, and this reflects on everybody. The Cubs are the enemy, not the press pool. We've been down this road before, and if we don't set a standard throughout the organization, top to bottom, we're the ones responsible when something unacceptable happens." "We wish Mickey the best, but this is the choice we felt we had to make to be the organization we intend to be, and frankly, we felt lucky that we were able to get a great baseball mind like Tony Muser on such short notice." pinning his firing this would set a dangerous precedent. When Edgardo Alfonzo has the 2025 Mets sitting at 51-30 in first place at the halfway mark and insults a reporter is he toast? and frankly, Mickey shouldn't get fired. a few curse words deserve an apology not someone's job. Vargas threatening a fight is a much bigger issue imo. Well, it was more than a few curse words. Beyond that, in the end, of course, it wouldn't be this incident alone, so much as the bedshit it is all part of. But that's too much to put in a statement, so make it about policy and everyone moves on. Fucking up in public and looking to blame it on the nearest someone else is a natural human instinct. Adults take a few deep breaths and accept ownership of their own choices and the consequences. I tend to hate when public sentiment is gunning for a manager. It's almost always unfair. I applaud the out-of-the-box thinking that led to Mickey's hiring, but I've found so much of what he's done as counterproductive. And even when he gets a choice right , he often lets weeks go by as he cycles through bad choices first. It's sort of like one of them damn curly-haired basketball coaches who arrive at a new organization with a system. Through one failure after another, he'll insist that "the system" is sound, but he doesn't have the right players for it, and the ones who are right refuse to get with the program. Years are lost an careers fade as all the possible juice that can be squeezed from that argument drip out. He's young, he's in shape, he's energetic, but he's as aggressively stubborn as the worst old coot of a manager. -

"The Mets sincerely regret the incident that took place ..." A variation on the implied absolution of the passive voice in apologies. -
That can for sure go in there. I've certainly argued it here in the past. Get what you can out of a guy who is effective. Conversely, don't be afraid to pull a guy who is ineffective (the lay-an-egg rule, expanded), even if it's his role to pitch that inning and that situation.

Tim Healey just became my favorite bear reporter. I don't know if this was meant to read "beat reporter," but it works either way. Good work. You've got a closer? Make two innings the standard usage you expect of him. He can't got two innings? Then you don't have a closer. Trade him to the Reds. Don't use him with a 1-to-3-run lead, but rather in a tie or a 1-to-2 run lead. Your other guys? Make two innings your minimum standard up and down the organization. You pitched your closer for two innings? Great, you can use somebody else tomorrow ... if you need somebody else. You don't even know what tomorrow's needs will be. Win today. Closer laying an egg? It's not an insult to his manhood to get somebody up behind him. Don't wait for the tying run to get on base when you go to Johnny Closer. Get him in there when the tying run is at the plate. That way, he's in control of the game. If that means he has to get six outs, talk to Bruce Sutter. If that means he has to come in the seventh, and even if he succeeds, he may have to give way to somebody in the ninth, great. Talk to Hoyt Wilhelm. You gave up two number one picks to get this guy. That's the sort of package you give up for John Elway. Don't lose a game because you didn't want to ask more than an inning from him. And if you do, Tim Healey is not your problem. You won't be sorry.

No, we CAN have good things. His current rate puts him at having the 17th-best home run season of all time. I no longer have to put a "* * *" gap between the top-ten all-time seasons and the guys Alonso is around. Also, Wilin Rosario is a name I had forgotten about.
