  1. And last year's Liberal Arts
  2. Has all the QT Checklist points most notably the graphic, cartoonish violence along with a warped humor accompanying all the blood-letting. But then he doesn't know when to rein it in and the ending goes on at least 20 minutes too long so I find myself saying, 'look, I know you're going to kill every single person on the screen so just do it and wrap things up, OK?' oe: one thing I did like was how, intentionally or not, the 'Mandingo Fighting' scene worked as a parody of MMA fighting, right down to the part where DiCaprio tells the one guy that his fighting style isn't exciting enough even though he wins his fights.
  3. This is one of those popular ones I just never got around to for some reason.
  4. Vic Sage wrote: one of the great films of the last 30 years. an epic with heart, and about something other than itself. with great performances. Yeah, this is where I'm at with this one too, although for whatever reason it doesn't seem to get the recognition or be in the rotation as often as other historical epics. So I wind up seeking this one out every five years or so and give it a watch (generally in the winter - it seems like a winter movie to me) and did so just recently which is what inspired this post. Great scenery, great cast (Nicholson's cold, cynical Eugene O'Neil for one) and a terrific script right down to the use of the "witnesses" and their own sometimes fuzzy recollections of the times. Sympathetic to the characters without either being preachy or failing to show the personal and professional flaws and conflicts in their lives.
  5. Sprawling epic from Warren Beatty [star, director, co-writer] about American journalist/writer Jack Reed and his (not always) merry band of literary leftists during the era of WWI and the Russian Revolution. Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Edward Herrman, Maureen Stapleton, Gene Hackman, and Paul Sorvino head a cast of many. Bring a snack (running time = 3:15)
  6. Was this the movie where William Hurt mumbles a lot? Oh wait, he does that in every movie.

  8. Vic Sage wrote: actually, i did see IDENTITY, now that i recall. It was pretty good, and its exactly the kind of movie i'm talking about. although Amanda Peet didn't show her boobies, and she should have. They're very nice. I believe that had Seth McFarland chosen to include Amanda in his recent boobies song he would have several entries from which to choose.
  9. Vic Sage wrote: i don't know anything about IDENTITY. What's the deal there? Well if I told you it would ruin the whole surprise. Buncha people (John Cusack & Amanda Peet among them) are forced to stop at a seedy Nevada motel in a pouring rainstorm and stuff starts happening in a 'Ten Little Indians' kinda way. Or does it?
  10. NYM Player of the Decade (so far -- 2010-2012) as per CPF Rankings Project 1 - R.A. 11. I think the 'cutoff' in the title was for how abruptly the movie ended.
  12. And now you know the source for Swan-H's 'I'm walking here!' post in an IGT after the Cubs Anthony Rizzo drew a base on balls last year.
  13. Some pretty good praise from prospect guru John Sickels at his site - and that piece provides an additional link to a brief interview and film clips done by 'Metsminorleagueblog.com' http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/2/28/4038100/prospect-note-noah-syndergaard-rhp-new-york-mets
  14. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Probably St. Lucie, right? Savannah most likely; he hasn't played in a full-season league yet so it's almost certain that he starts there. Whether he gets to PSL in the high-A FSL before the season is out will of course depend on how things go in the low-A Sally Lg.
  15. Is it true that Terry Collins was nominated for best animated short?
  16. They were uranium round fragments that hit Bond's chest/shoulder, and those are, like, totally easy to shrug off. The action IS totally preposterous at times, but other than that the flick was entertaining enough - and this from someone who had pretty much given up on Bond in recent years. I skipped much of the Dalton & Brosnan era and was less impressed than most seemed to be with Casino Royale even though I thought Craig up to the task.
  17. There's some truth to this, but just because the studio has no faith in it (or the Oscar voters, screw them) doesn't mean you can't get good stuff. Isn't this exactly the time for studios to be taking chances on what could be the next big writer/director/etc? Sure, not everything released at this time of year is junk. But the calendar doesn't bode well for especially those flicks with big names or big themes. So you'd think that stuff like Renner in HANSEL & GRETEL would probably be fit more in the summer season if the studio had more faith in it, and the new Pacino/Walken/Arkin starts with one, and maybe two, strikes against it when you see it dumped out on Feb 1st. The other telltale sign is the note in your local newspaper saying: this movie was not screened for reviewers prior to release. In those cases the studio is essentially hiding things and hoping to get at least one decent weekend out of the box office before the reviewers have a chance to savage it and throw cold water on any potential ticket buyers.
  18. I've seen very few movies so far in February. The problem with those released at this time of year is that they often suck almost be definition. Released too late to be eligible for the 2012 Oscars, not thought worthy enough to save for the summer season, and so early in 2013 that they'll be forgotten by the time the next award season comes around. February movies are the rough equivalent of new TV shows which are slated immediately for Friday nights; you know the studio has little or no faith in it.
  19. As in, over-the-top by John Goodman standards.
  20. Denzel Washington is a really good pilot. He also has some really big problems. Co-stars include Don Cheadle in an understated role as the pilot union's lawyer, and John Goodman in an over-the-top role as Denzel's wild, running-buddy.
  21. Yeah, I haven't been a big fan of recent time-shifting movies that I've seen in recent years (Source Code, plus others whose titles I can't think of at the moment) but I did like this one. As RC implied, they seemed to put some thought into the plot and consequences of this one above and beyond just the fact that they were time traveling.
