  1. I suspect that most scouts/GMs/whatever would choose Syndergaard's future over Montero's if given the choice, even if that future is a bit further away. And, yes, whenever you project further into the future the margin of error theoretically gets bigger but I think most would take that risk and opt for the higher projected ceiling.
  2. Sure, but if it's for a similarly young position player of equal promise it's something that should be strongly considered. Sometimes you have to deal from strength in order to fill your weaknesses.
  3. Allowing zero runs over your last twenty innings/three starts since his one start stint in Vegas will get you called up right quick. Batters were 11-for-71 (.155) over that time w/no extra-base hits and 18 Ks. Season-long WHiP now stands at 0.90
  4. Male stripper has a successful gig, money and women but dreams of bigger things. But has his present lifestyle already scuttled his future plans? And does his advancing age, the disrespect from his mentor, and the carelessness of his protege spell doom even if he stays? Channing Tatum & Matthew McCaunaghey lead the parade of taut abs and shaking butts.

  6. We encourage awful and embarrassing around here.
  7. Zvon wrote: I never look in this section. Afraid of spoilers. Nah, we're pretty good about warning of spoilers. Notice, for instance, how no one here revealed that Harry dies at the end of this movie .... Oooops!
  8. An up-to-date overview of Puello from John Sickels http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/5/28/4368092/prospect-smackdown-joc-pederson-vs-cesar-puello-los-angeles-dodgers-new-york-mets
  9. Campbell has actually played more 3B & OF this season than he has 1B - although that's not a bad thing either. Has only about half the number of ABs that a full-time player should have around this time of year though - not sure what's up with that.
  10. A small splash of cold water on the Rainy for HoF campaign from writer Matt Eddy at BA Mets RHP Rainy Lara has a 1.17 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 9-1 K-BB ratio for Low-A Savannah this season, but scouts are concerned that he’s getting results primarily with a low-90s sinker and a funky arm action. Questions about the secondary stuff and that arm action suggest to many that he may be headed to the bullpen. Keep in mind also that Savannah is probably the No. 1 pitcher’s park in the minors.
  11. Been over 18 months since we've had an update on this guy: From today's BA: -- Cesar Puello, rf, Mets: Puello has been a frustrating prospect. He’ll show flashes of brilliance, plus raw power, an above-average arm and the speed that helped him steal 45 bases in 109 games there years ago. Yet he’s never been able to have that breakthrough that some scouts had expected from him. Until, perhaps, this year. Early in his career, Puello struggled with his hitting approach and to generate loft in his swing to be able to tap into his raw power. This year he’s shown a more selective hitting approach and his swing plane has continued to evolve to help him drive the ball out of the park, which is why he’s hitting .305/.369/.508 with five home runs in 33 games at Double-A Binghamton. This might just be the breakout the Mets have been waiting for.
  12. I never saw E&tC so I've got no basis for comparison.
  13. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: It was okay. I'm kind of disappointed because I wanted to like it more, but it was really kind of dull where it ought to have been kind of exciting. The soundtrack was great. The movie could have ended when they drove away from Jersey, the whole ending, and sister-narrator conceit, and the Stones-on-the-train, were all probably unnecessary. Yeah, that's pretty much where I'm at too, expecting a bit more from the Sopranos trio of Chase, Gandolfini, & Van Zandt. A bit choppy and, at times, heavy-handed with the direction; a bit too obvious at others with the stereotypes (I hate that my dad's an ad exec so I'm going to run off to Greenwhich Village cuz that's where it's at).
  14. "... alert us to the impending war on subtlety." That's a great line.
  15. Written & directed by David Chase (The Sopranos) New Jersey teen from the early 1960s sees Rock & Roll as his salvation. Occasional hi-jinx ensue
  16. It's a problem when these fact-based movies, which often go out of their way to claim authenticity in some of the smallest details, seem to brush off or otherwise seem unconcerned by incorrect facts in some of the larger themes. LINCOLN had several of these. Speilberg and others connected with the film went out of their way via interviews around the release to talk about their attention to authenticity: from the books that were on the White House shelves (which no film viewer could see anyway); to the ticking sound of Licnoln's actual watch; to Day-Lewis's accurate mimicry of the supposed pitch of Lincoln's voice. Yet when a current Connecticut politician pointed out that the role call scene switched the votes of two Connecticut reps, writer Tony Kushner (among others) dismissed the complaints as nit-picking nonsense that had nothing to do with the point of the film. But get the correct ticking sound did?
  17. Judd Hirsch & Christine Lahti have been under assumed names and on the run for two decades on account of crimes committed in the name of 1960s anti-war radicalism. But the running and changing identities get tougher with two children in tow, especially when one of them grows up to be the teenaged, talented and heart-throbby River Phoenix.
  18. Jack gettin' hisself some NY Post ink No mention of Chipotle
  19. Took an 'L' in Friday night's game vs Akron: 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 2 BB, 8 Ks ... so that K/BB ratio 'plummets' to 35/3 Bingo bats imitated the big club by getting themselves shut out and K-ing 16 times There were a couple of questions asked about him this week in 'Baseball America' (where he made honorable mention in their 'Hot Week' list). * A question about when he'd be called up got an answer of: next year unless the big club is contending * Another reader questioned his fastball but the answer there was: low-90s to peaking at 95 so no problems there
  20. Stats to Date: .424/.513/.576 over 17 games, 80 PAs, 66 ABs The most consistent thing about his career so far is keeping that OBA number in the range of 100 points above his BA And in answer to the question asked earlier about the offensive nature of the league or Savannah, Baseball America sez: Mets CF Brandon Nimmo has shown impressive bat-to-ball skills early on for Low-A Savannah, going 12-for-27 on the week. I would note only that of the 12 hits, 11 were singles. Given how tough Savannah plays for lefty hitters, that could be par for the course during Sand Gnats home games, though Savannah played about half its games in either Greensboro and Lakewood this week.
  21. The movie used a former minor league ballplayer as "Jackie's" stunt double for some of the baseball scenes.

  23. Decent grade from me as well, mainly for pulling off the unlikely young/old romance pairing with believability. Some of the other sub-plots rang less authentic but weren't terrible. Props to Elizabeth Olsen as the college chick, both for being a good actress and for not adopting the heroin chic look of her sisters; to perennial pro Richard Jenkins as the main character's ex-professor/mentor; and a decent job as well from TV star boy (Josh Radnor from 'How I Met Your Mother') for tackling the writer/director/actor trifecta. Not a great flick, but solid.
  24. Vic Sage wrote: is that an offensive-type league? Neither the Sally Lg as a whole nor, to the best of my knowledge, Savannah's park specifically, have the rep as hitting havens. Besides, the biggest thing with this kid's numbers to date isn't the power that places like the Cal League or certain Pac Coast Lg cities are known to inflate, but rather the BA/OBA gap which, one would figure, should shine regardless of environment. Over a 100 difference during Rookie Ball in 2011, a 124 point gap last season at Brooklyn, and now close to 100 in the small sample size this year. Nice strike-zone knowledge for a kid just turning 20 and, if the high priests of Moneyball are to be believed, a good indicator of future success.
