  1. "... alert us to the impending war on subtlety." That's a great line.
  2. Written & directed by David Chase (The Sopranos) New Jersey teen from the early 1960s sees Rock & Roll as his salvation. Occasional hi-jinx ensue
  3. It's a problem when these fact-based movies, which often go out of their way to claim authenticity in some of the smallest details, seem to brush off or otherwise seem unconcerned by incorrect facts in some of the larger themes. LINCOLN had several of these. Speilberg and others connected with the film went out of their way via interviews around the release to talk about their attention to authenticity: from the books that were on the White House shelves (which no film viewer could see anyway); to the ticking sound of Licnoln's actual watch; to Day-Lewis's accurate mimicry of the supposed pitch of Lincoln's voice. Yet when a current Connecticut politician pointed out that the role call scene switched the votes of two Connecticut reps, writer Tony Kushner (among others) dismissed the complaints as nit-picking nonsense that had nothing to do with the point of the film. But get the correct ticking sound did?
  4. Judd Hirsch & Christine Lahti have been under assumed names and on the run for two decades on account of crimes committed in the name of 1960s anti-war radicalism. But the running and changing identities get tougher with two children in tow, especially when one of them grows up to be the teenaged, talented and heart-throbby River Phoenix.
  5. Jack gettin' hisself some NY Post ink No mention of Chipotle
  6. Took an 'L' in Friday night's game vs Akron: 5 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 2 BB, 8 Ks ... so that K/BB ratio 'plummets' to 35/3 Bingo bats imitated the big club by getting themselves shut out and K-ing 16 times There were a couple of questions asked about him this week in 'Baseball America' (where he made honorable mention in their 'Hot Week' list). * A question about when he'd be called up got an answer of: next year unless the big club is contending * Another reader questioned his fastball but the answer there was: low-90s to peaking at 95 so no problems there
  7. Stats to Date: .424/.513/.576 over 17 games, 80 PAs, 66 ABs The most consistent thing about his career so far is keeping that OBA number in the range of 100 points above his BA And in answer to the question asked earlier about the offensive nature of the league or Savannah, Baseball America sez: Mets CF Brandon Nimmo has shown impressive bat-to-ball skills early on for Low-A Savannah, going 12-for-27 on the week. I would note only that of the 12 hits, 11 were singles. Given how tough Savannah plays for lefty hitters, that could be par for the course during Sand Gnats home games, though Savannah played about half its games in either Greensboro and Lakewood this week.
  8. The movie used a former minor league ballplayer as "Jackie's" stunt double for some of the baseball scenes.

  10. Decent grade from me as well, mainly for pulling off the unlikely young/old romance pairing with believability. Some of the other sub-plots rang less authentic but weren't terrible. Props to Elizabeth Olsen as the college chick, both for being a good actress and for not adopting the heroin chic look of her sisters; to perennial pro Richard Jenkins as the main character's ex-professor/mentor; and a decent job as well from TV star boy (Josh Radnor from 'How I Met Your Mother') for tackling the writer/director/actor trifecta. Not a great flick, but solid.
  11. Vic Sage wrote: is that an offensive-type league? Neither the Sally Lg as a whole nor, to the best of my knowledge, Savannah's park specifically, have the rep as hitting havens. Besides, the biggest thing with this kid's numbers to date isn't the power that places like the Cal League or certain Pac Coast Lg cities are known to inflate, but rather the BA/OBA gap which, one would figure, should shine regardless of environment. Over a 100 difference during Rookie Ball in 2011, a 124 point gap last season at Brooklyn, and now close to 100 in the small sample size this year. Nice strike-zone knowledge for a kid just turning 20 and, if the high priests of Moneyball are to be believed, a good indicator of future success.

  13. And last year's Liberal Arts
  14. Has all the QT Checklist points most notably the graphic, cartoonish violence along with a warped humor accompanying all the blood-letting. But then he doesn't know when to rein it in and the ending goes on at least 20 minutes too long so I find myself saying, 'look, I know you're going to kill every single person on the screen so just do it and wrap things up, OK?' oe: one thing I did like was how, intentionally or not, the 'Mandingo Fighting' scene worked as a parody of MMA fighting, right down to the part where DiCaprio tells the one guy that his fighting style isn't exciting enough even though he wins his fights.
  15. This is one of those popular ones I just never got around to for some reason.
  16. Vic Sage wrote: one of the great films of the last 30 years. an epic with heart, and about something other than itself. with great performances. Yeah, this is where I'm at with this one too, although for whatever reason it doesn't seem to get the recognition or be in the rotation as often as other historical epics. So I wind up seeking this one out every five years or so and give it a watch (generally in the winter - it seems like a winter movie to me) and did so just recently which is what inspired this post. Great scenery, great cast (Nicholson's cold, cynical Eugene O'Neil for one) and a terrific script right down to the use of the "witnesses" and their own sometimes fuzzy recollections of the times. Sympathetic to the characters without either being preachy or failing to show the personal and professional flaws and conflicts in their lives.
  17. Sprawling epic from Warren Beatty [star, director, co-writer] about American journalist/writer Jack Reed and his (not always) merry band of literary leftists during the era of WWI and the Russian Revolution. Warren Beatty, Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Edward Herrman, Maureen Stapleton, Gene Hackman, and Paul Sorvino head a cast of many. Bring a snack (running time = 3:15)
  18. Was this the movie where William Hurt mumbles a lot? Oh wait, he does that in every movie.

  20. Vic Sage wrote: actually, i did see IDENTITY, now that i recall. It was pretty good, and its exactly the kind of movie i'm talking about. although Amanda Peet didn't show her boobies, and she should have. They're very nice. I believe that had Seth McFarland chosen to include Amanda in his recent boobies song he would have several entries from which to choose.
  21. Vic Sage wrote: i don't know anything about IDENTITY. What's the deal there? Well if I told you it would ruin the whole surprise. Buncha people (John Cusack & Amanda Peet among them) are forced to stop at a seedy Nevada motel in a pouring rainstorm and stuff starts happening in a 'Ten Little Indians' kinda way. Or does it?

  23. I think the 'cutoff' in the title was for how abruptly the movie ended.
  24. And now you know the source for Swan-H's 'I'm walking here!' post in an IGT after the Cubs Anthony Rizzo drew a base on balls last year.
