  2. Let's see if they're brainless enough to schedule that first Saturday game at night.
  3. Cubs definitely hearing footsteps. They're coming off getting swept by the Brewers over the weekend, scoring a grand total of 3 runs in the process [0-2, 2-15, 1-3] And the Brews aren't even their closest competition in the Central these days as they've now got a bigger challenge from the suddenly hot Cardinals [8-2 in Sept, 2.0 games out]. Those three teams find themselves tied up with the three in the West (yeah, we have to include the Dodgers these days) for a six-into-two playoff scramble. Lineup: C Willson Contreras is recently off the DL, SS Addison Russell now on it so Javier Baez slides over from 2B Other than that, aside from Rizzo at 1B, Joe Maddon rotates the positions of the rest of the guys every two innings based on opposing pitcher, gut hunch, or possibly sun-spot activity for all I know, so there's no point in trying to project things. The lefty Quintana has made 10 starts for the Cubs with decent but hardly great results [4.03 ERA; 1.20 WHIP] since his mid-season trade from the crosstown ChiSox We get a second LHP tomorrow as Harvey faces Jon Lester on Wednesday, then Thursday it's Lugo vs Mike Montgomery, all 8:05 starts as mid-week day games in Wrigley fade into oblivion. We actually took 2 of 3 from them at our place back in mid-June when both squads were trudging along at just under .500 They've improved somewhat since then, us not so much.
  4. The Rays are disgracing our field vs the Yanx - which is pretty much what we did on our field as well. The worst part is that it's tied at 1 with two outs and the Rays commit an error to give the Yanx the lead and keep the inning going, then Ellsbury "accidentally" hits the catcher's glove for his record-breaking* 30th time, which was of course followed by a 3R HR The Rays bunted on Sabathia in the 1st inning - apparently without seeking permission first. No word on whether the Yanx have filed a complaint with MLB, or with the World Court in The Hague, or whether Hillary has added this to her list of things responsible for her loss last November. * Ellsbury broke the tie he was in with Pete Rose, only that Pete had almost exactly triple the number of plate appearances.
  5. Edgy MD wrote: The thing is, the record was Ty Cobb's when Lou Brock broke it, so they must've found some Slidin' Billy Hamilton data that wasn't part of the official record and subsequently added it. The guy died in 1940 as the record-holder and didn't even know it. Also, lots of baseball folks used to routinely ignore pre-1901 stats which had the effect of erasing all but the final year of Sliding Billy's career. So while he might have had an idea that he had out-thefted Cobb for their careers, the problem was getting someone to listen or care.
  6. 18 straight for Cleveland. One more and they'll need to sign Scott 'Pickin Machine' Hatteberg to a contract.
  7. I'm fascinated by this Dodger skid, particularly considering how hot they were leading into it. After getting blown out (8-1) at home again today to the Rox, they've now lost 15 times in the last 17 days (16 games) It had taken them 85 days -- May 31 to August 23rd -- to lose their previous 15 games. DBacks finally won vs SDP so the West lead is down to 9.0 games. It's not yet 7.5 games with 17 to go but it is 9 with 19 And where they once seemed like a reasonable bet to beat the 108 win season of our '86ers (28 - 20 when I started tracking) they'd now have close out the season on a 17 - 2 run
  8. Well the entire NL East can't wait until next year for any hopes they had of a division championship. The Nats clinched a tie earlier today with their win over the Phillies (I know, those shouldn't count but they do) and then needed a Braves win over the Marlins to clinch things free and clear. And so Miami then promptly coughed up 2 with 2 outs in the 9th to tie it and then 2 more in the 11th to hand their game to Atlanta. Last night the Fish lost on a bases-loaded walk. Where was this Marlins bullpen when we played them (yeah, I know the answer to that one).
  9. How depressed does (currently injured) Cincy speedster Billy Hamilton get when he realizes how far he has to go just to be the most accomplished stealer named Billy Hamilton?!?!?
  10. Well this game totally suxx but at least the Mets aren't going to lose it ... because I don't believe this game is ever going to actually end!!
  11. He also now has a five-inning 3 hitter.
  12. Edgy MD wrote: Mantle shouldn't have retired. He was embarassed by his .237 batting average, but it was the year of the pitcher, and the whole league hit .230. His OPS+, which he had little way of knowing, was still a lofty 143. The next year, the mounds were lowered and folks started hitting again. If he could have found a way to stay on the field a few more seasons, it might have been a three-way race to 714. The McLain gift was actually based on the mere assumption that the Mick was coasting into the clubhouse. Mantle went to ST in 1969 and it was only then that he determined (confirmed?) he didn't have enough to push on.
  13. ChiSox 1Bman Jose Abreu had singled, doubled, and homered in Saturday's game, so when he came up for his final at-bat in the 8th inning the announcers naturally went to the most unfulfilled expression in all of baseball; "he's just a triple short of the cycle" The 6' 3" - 255 lb Abreu with 10 career triples then proceeded to hit a triple.
  14. It wasn't for his 500th HR but for what McLain and others thought might be the last one he'd ever hit*. I never heard about a tongue story. McLain outright told Mantle that he'd groove one for him. Rumor had it that Mantle didn't believe him initially so let the first one go by before realizing what was up and smacking the second out of the park. * Turned out he'd hit his final one the next day off Jim Lonborg - so his final two HRs were off the AL CY winner to-be and the reigning one.
  15. Now nine straight losses and 14 of 15. However their lead stayed at 10 games as the DBacks coughed up six in the 9th to lose 8-7. So after sweeping the Dodgers, then the Rox, then the Dodgers again, the Snakes lose two straight to the Padres
  16. Oooh, I just got a rare eight also. One was a b&w guy but that was Jackie Robinson
  17. So he's on the shelf but it's one of the lower shelves where we can still get him down and use him without having to get out the ladder and stuff.

I mean, the Rays do come back to YS the last week, why can't the Yanks just swap the two series? Because they're the Yanquis, they don't alter their plans for other teams, other teams accommodate them. As it turns out: [NY Times]: switching series with Tampa "was never seriously considered because of previously scheduled events in [YSIII]", namely a soccer game which is to be played today but that requires time for re-sodding afterward, plus there's a food convention/trade show on Tuesday & Wednesday.

He's probably not buried under one of the pyramids although you never know. This is Francis Xavier Paul Healy who played parts of four season in the 1930s. He's the uncle of Francis Xavier Healy, both of Holyoke, Mass. I wonder if he talked incessantly too. 21. Those HRs also move Reyes into a tie for the team lead among still active players, tied with Cabrera at 12
  22. All seats $25, go on sale starting Sat morning.

Well I don't expect him to literally say it, just "say" it by ignoring them and continuing to work at what he wants to do, what he's being paid to do, and what he still believes he can do.
