  1. Yanx have a rare Monday day game due to an earlier rain-out make-up at home vs KCR, all of which gives a chance for Aaron Judge's ridiculous streak-a-thon of a season to continue. After HR'ing 27 times (and hitting well over .300) in April, May & June, he then totaled just 10 in July & August combined while hitting around .210 Well thanks to the two he's hit already this afternoon (game in the 8th inning) his September HR total is now up to 13 including 7 in the last 7 games. It also brings his season total to 50 topping Mark McGwire's 49 in 1987 as the previous rookie record 8-3 Yanx - top 8th
  2. 4:10 start time for the first game make-up And yet another new player makes an appearance in the clean-up spot AOKI - RF REYES - 2B NIMMO - LF EVANS - 3B SMITH - 1B ROSARIO - SS LAGARES - CF NIDO - C FLEXEN - P Flexen last started vs Houston on Sept 3rd (and it wasn't pretty), has pitched four times for a total of five innings since. He'll be facing a Braves lineup that looks like this: INCIARTE - CF ALBIES - 2B FREEMAN - 1B MARKAKIS - RF FLOWERS - C RUIZ - 3B SWANSON - SS PETERSON - LF SMIS - P
  3. Yanx lose today (despite two more A. Judge HRs) while Boston up their non hot streak to 18-8, all of which pretty much puts the AL East race to rest: 5 up with 7 to go and no head-to-heads And another Twins win today leaves them snugly wrapped in the WC #2 slot: 4.5 games behind the Yanx and a full 5.0 ahead of the Angels (pending tonight's LAA vs HOU game) So the only drams left (if you consider home field to constitute drama) is whether the Indians (currently 2.0 games up) keep the top slot over the Astros.
  4. And how about Gary last night, during a brief discussion of the AL playoffs, suggesting that getting the best record wouldn't necessarily be the best thing on account of probably having the face the Yanquis in the 1st (post-WC) round and how the Indianstros would probably rather face Boston because "the Yanx are just so hot now". Yes Gary, the Yanx are a scorching hot 16-9 over their last 25 while the Red Sox are a measly 17-8
  5. I suppose that series will depend on how things go between now and then. If the Yanx creep closer over the next five days forcing the Sox to still need to put away the division, and/or if the Astros determine that finishing with a better record than Cleveland is both within reach and worth going for (currently Cleveland +1.5), then it'll be closer to a full-out series. If neither holds true then, yeah, it'll be a lot of feinting and jabbing with cards in the hole not played. Back in '97 the Indians intentionally held rookie pitcher Jaret Wright out of a late season (Sept 23-25) series with the Yanx on the idea that he had only been called up in June, the Yanx had never seen him, and the two teams might meet up in the post-season. They of course did meet up and Wright, with all of 16 ML games under his belt, wound up starting and winning Games 2 and 5 to help put away the champs in that best of five series.
  6. All three outs in that inning were 3-Unassisted
  7. But you can get a save for pitching the final 6 or 7 innings of a game too, not just the final 2 or 3. Now you can't get a Win [u:355ig9zh]AND[/u:355ig9zh] a Save so Harvey's theoretical 'W' would take precedence over an 'S' but, had he come in with a lead and then left without it, there's nothing stopping that from being a 'BS'

  9. Not that I know of, but relievers in the 8th & 9th innings can get credited with both a blown save (for losing a lead) and then a Win (for still being the pitcher of record when they go back ahead) so why should that not apply to a reliever in the 3rd or 4th. I mean the whole concept of the 'Blown Save' is flawed anyway - so who really cares? It matter only to "closers" as we roughly define that job but the BS gets hung on middle relievers all the time, guys who can only blow the save of get 'credit' for the even less meaningful 'Hold'. The set-up types get hung with BS all the time but rarely stick around long enough to get a Save itself to balance those out.

OE -- Better yet, I thought a pitcher had to be pitching in a save or potential save situation to qualify for a blown save. Y'know, I rescind what I said earlier (both the Edgy and to you). I was thinking of a situation where Harvey had inherited a lead which he of course did not, so no BS in this case. I have however seen BS assigned to relievers who worked lost leads as early as the 4th inning. I've never see a 2nd inning BS because a reliever that soon is so rare and even more so when your team is ahead, but the principle still stands.

  13. Except that nobody cares about blown saves except for closers in the 9th inning.
  14. I believe 'Pete' is just serving as a generic name for purposes of the subject title. 'One Inning Noah' just doesn't have the same ring.
  15. Minnesota, down two to the Tigers, just had an eight-run 8th to take a 10-3 lead. Even with tonight's win it'll only make them 7-7 over the last two weeks, but every other WC contender (except the Yanx) have been worse so this pretty much sews up WC #2 for them and a date in YSIII a week from Tuesday. The Angels picked the wrong time to have back to back series with Cleveland and Houston on their schedule.

  17. Har-Vees Bet-Ter Har-Vees Bet-Ter Best to not push that one too far, even if it's good to dust off temporarily
  18. Yanx clinch a post-season spot (as if that was in doubt at this point) with their win over Toronto today, but Boston wins as well keeping the gap at 4.0 games and taking another day off the sked - so a good day for Boston overall.
  19. Well, he is from Texas [fimg=150:2e43kut8]https://www.texaspete.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/buffalo.png[/fimg:2e43kut8]

  21. Giving Noah just a single inning is sensible on account of the long layoff. Starting him then coming in with a replacement rather than the other way around makes sense too since it assures him the optimal warmup time. I don't see the harm and certainly not the 'bizarre-ness' - particularly not in the final week of a lost season.
  22. In this afternoon's game the Brewers gave up a 10th inning run to the Cubs for the third straight day*, but this time they came back with a 2R HR from Travis Shaw in the bottom half to pull one out and at least keep themselves alive in the WC race even if the division (-4.5) is probably out of reach. * and the game prior to that had lost via a 9th inning walk-off to Pitt -- that's a rough week whether you're fighting for a playoff slot or not
  23. I think the owners and GMs simply delude themselves into thinking that this guy is, and therefore will always be, different; that what he gives you now is too good to pass up so that even when he does decline that decline will be smaller and his future diminished self will still leave him better than most. And then there was ARod where the Steinbrenner boys (left alone I think Cashman would have let him walk) convinced themselves that not showing up on a previous drug sheet was the same thing as being proven clean and so were willing to spend anything to be able to claim that both the season & career HRs records were restored 'back where they belong' in Yanqui pinstripes once baseball -- either officially or just mentally -- weeded out all the steroid cheats. Marketing opportunities and visions of lasting records, in this case, clouded rationality.
  24. Speaking of high contract players cratering, has anyone checked out the year Miguel Cabrera is having? No wonder they're kicking manager Brad Ausmus out the door. After seven straight years with an OPS averaging right around 1000 (169 OPS+), he plunged to [u:r3iw8dil]725[/u:r3iw8dil] this season (91 OPS+) and, like Pujols, has a negative WAR both offensively and defensively - Cabrera, unlike Pujols, is still playing the field more often than not. Now so far this is a one-year plummet, as opposed to Prince Albert's five year steady decline, but that's quite a plummet for a guy who'll turn 35 as next season starts and has an even more expensive contract attached to him. Signed in March of '14 to a deal covering his age 31 - 40 seasons with club/vesting/buyout options for the two years beyond that, he's guaranteed another $172 million thru the 2023 season.
  25. I'm starting to think we're going to have trouble making the playoffs this year.
