  1. When the alternative to listening to family and medical advice is listening to the needs and wants of an internet fan site, I'm kinda hoping he tells the NYM fan base to STFU
  2. Do ya think he might have consulted with doctors and family about this?
  3. Took a rare complete whiff this morning, missing on, among others, ex-NYM Chris Young (the tall white version - in a Texas hat). Only one other player was active and that was Jonathan Broxton which, like my miss of Heath Bell yesterday, was complicated by the fact that the thumbnail photo doesn't show his massive thighs.
  4. The only game the Dodgers had won since August 25th going into last night had been the 1-0 shutout of the Padres on Kershaw's return from the DL last Friday (Kershaw went 6 innings). Last night was Kershaw's first outing since that win and the Rockies chased him in the 4th inning [4 runs on 6 hits + 3 BBs in 3.2 IP] en route to a 9-1 drubbing. Arizona was off yesterday so it was a relatively good day for the Dodgers in that they lost only 1/2 game off their lead -- now down to 10.0 games with 22 remaining. But when your 12th loss in 13 games is also a Kershaw game then it's never a good sign.
  5. So it appears that irregularities in the Tourette's "charity" that Carton ran is at least part of what tipped the Feds off. Not that he'd be the first celebrity douche whose high-profile fund-raisers did more to raise his/her own awareness than that of its stated goal. But in this case it's suspected that, instead of the usual route where the majority of the funds are eaten up by high overhead and limo rides to lure shoulder-rubbing celebrities, these were mostly funneled into the C.C. gambling debt relief effort.
  6. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I don't get the fans who are rooting for him to retire. I never got it either. Personally I'm done following sports when I start to adopt the mindset that I'd prefer the players not to play, the pitchers not to pitch, and the team not to win, and yet that seems to be the vibe from too many fans these days.
  7. That's two nights in a row from different ersatz cleanup hitters. d'Arnaud, now Nimmo
  8. After that rather lengthy (25 pitch?) 1st inning, Harvey's actually been quite efficient since and is right on target (74 pitches) at the end of five. And one of his two runs allowed should be unearned on account of that uncaught foul pop.
  9. Reyes takes Reynolds off the hook and cashes in the two runs.
  10. Hit on the first four in a row -- Ron Santo, Jonathan Papelbon, Justiin Verlander, Joe Torre (MFY version) -- and then promptly struck out on the next eight, all b&w guys only some of which were names I even knew.
  11. More 'that's kind of weird' observations -- Three trips to Atlanta: April - May - June
  12. CF/speedster Billy Hamilton broke his hand yesterday and will almost certainly miss the remainder of the season. This Mahle guy pitching: Tyler F. Mahle (that's actually how his name is listed: Tyler F. Mahle) will be making his 3rd ML appearance/start The Reds 7th round draft pick out of HS in 2013. RH 6' 3" / 210. Had some pretty good numbers this year in AA Pensacola and in AAA Louisville. Both his starts were against Pittsburgh on Aug 27 & Sept 2: 3 runs on 4 hits + 4 walks in 5 innings in his debut, then 6 shutout innings on 5 hits/0 walks the second time. Reds lost both games, he got an L and an ND. Pitch counts have been high both times, but that's what you get with young pitchers.
  13. This could very well get stale quickly, but anyone who wants to take the occasional BB-Ref mugshot quiz feel free to publicize your results here. They change the lineup several times per day so if someone (like me here) gives away the answers you only need to check back a couple hours later to get a fresh set of thumbnail photos. Hit on four out of 12 - probably my most common percentage. Scored on '80s stars Mike Greenwell, Eric Davis, and Ruben Sierra, plus had a gimme with Andrew McCutcheon Whiffed on a very young and considerably less hairy Dodgers-era Jayson Werth, the Tampa version of Heath Bell (the photo doesn't show his massive things) and on all six b&w era dudes several of whom look like they played in the 1700s.
  14. Grandy as a Dodger is 6-for-60 although 4 of those 6 hits are HRs plus he tosses in 11 walks in just that short time. Kind of like an exaggeration of all he was here recently.
  15. 'Stick' as a player was maybe the last master of the hidden ball trick. Not sure if there's a record of each but he pulled it off at least a couple times. In the front office he is often, and probably rightfully at least to a certain degree, given credit for the building of the mid-90s Yanquis by NOT trading away all their future talent while George was off on double-secret probation (otherwise known as a lifetime ban which sadly got reduced to not lifetime). Was willing, like so many others, to be both publicly and privately abused by George in exchange for a seemingly endless string of revolving jobs within the organization.
  16. A couple of sample games from last night (Wed) Cubs 1 - Pirates 0 At Pitt so they went the full 9 innings, but just one run on a total of 9 hits plus 7 walks. 67 total batters came to the plate (75 is about average) and there were ZERO mid-inning pitching changes ... and yet the game still managed to take 3:05 Angels 1 - Oakland 3 8-1/2 innings, 4 runs, 14 hits + 7 walks, 2 mid-inning pitching changes, 71 batters = 3:10 What the fuck are they doing during these games? How long would they have taken if there were like runs and hits and scoring and stuff? It's bad enough that the 2:40 or so average many of us grew up with is now 3:05-3:10, but games like these are the type that used to run [u:3udl17jk]2[/u:3udl17jk]:10 or maybe 2:20, but unless there were like 15 different replay reviews (which itself would be disturbing) those games sound like there was a lot of standing around doing nothing and THAT, more than the time of game itself, is the bigger problem.
  17. Benjamin Grimm wrote: When I visit that site each day (more or less) to paste stats and box scores, I play a little game with the twelve faces that appear on the left side of the page. I try to see how many players I can recognize. I do the same thing! Not that I then record and track the results or anything, but I think my record may be seven. oe: just went over there and got five (they change the lineup every couple hours): recognized Lee May, Jon Matlack (some of them are gimmes), Kenny Lofton, Ken Caminiti, and Ellis Burks Struck out on Wes Parker, Rich Harden, Al Oliver, and a couple of back and white guys including Black Sox manager Kid Gleason (he didn't look a thing like actor John Mahoney).
  18. While the DBacks upped their streak to 13 as they completed a sweep of the Dodgers in LA, the one streak they did NOT continue was the one where they didn't trail in a game for 97 consecutive innings. They blew that when they gave up a run in the bottom of the 1st last night. They immediately tied it in the top of the 2nd so I suppose one could go digging to find out the last time they trailed for an entire inning but that gets a bit too esoteric for even baseball nerds. The NL West lead is down to 10.5 which is still not close enough to be interesting although that gap is exactly half of what it was just 13 days ago.
  19. bmfc1 wrote: It's definitely a new guy. He is awful but less awful than his predecessor. The disturbing part is that they still think that kind of pro-wrestling hype (as Grimm put it) is needed. So while it's nice that they've upgraded the voice, it's the attitude that's the bigger problem. They still have tee shirt tosses and the dopey fans count the number of runs after a run is scored and then yell "WOO!" or something like that ... Maybe it's just small sample bias, but the handful of times I've been to that park that "cheer" seems to be a favorite of the 65 and older crowd. For those uninitiated, Nats Park fans have a have a variation of the 'J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets' cheer -- and by 'variation of' I mean blatant rip-off -- except that after the 'Nats Nats Nats' part they add a dorky WOOOOO! at the end which just sounds so out of place that it makes you turn around and go 'Huh?!?'
  20. And this sounds like it's a LOT more than simple ticket scalping. They're talking about him defrauding investors out of millions in a large ranging conspiracy.
  21. Yes, losing team has to bat at least five times.
  22. Reyes just shut down that "run" to 1st awfully early for a semi-tough backhand play by the 2Bman. Someone needs to remind him that he doesn't have a job for next year as things stand and that maybe he needs to play like he's fighting for one.
  23. Right now we need to pray for LESS rain.
  24. Attention Kmart staff: Clean-up in inning one ... clean-up in inning one
  25. Yanx were at #2 to start the season - well behind the Dodgers and slightly ahead of Boston & Detroit Things change as the year goes on obviously but I don't recall the Yanx doing too much shedding during the season. Mets were 12th
