  1. Neither Dave Magadan (34th in ABs - .099 IsoW) nor Curtis Granderson (35th - .102) qualifies BatMags = 4 Edgy = 2
  2. PlacePLAYERWalk Rate 1)Wayne Garrett.111 2) 3) 4) 5)Lee Mazzilli93 T-6 T-6 T-6 9) 10) BatMags = 5 Points Edgy 3 Points
  3. And it turns out that Wayne Garrett actually IS the winner of the Wayne Garrett inspired quiz. With a stunning IsoW of .111 [.247 BA / .348 OBA] he is the #1 walk-drawer-rate-guy of all NYMs Olerud, btw, is at .110 but doesn't qualify for this quiz as he barely cracks the top 50 in NYM ABs PlacePLAYERWalk Rate 1)Wayne Garrett.111 2) 3) 4) 5) T-6 T-6 T-6 9) 10) BatMags = 5 Points
  4. Inspired by a Wayne Garrett discussion during a recent IGT, your job is to list the top 10 Mets in order of their greatest walk rate as a NYM. For purposes of this quiz, ‘Walk Rate' is defined as the simple difference between a player's career BA & OBA even though that may not quite measure only his ‘batting eye' for a player with a large number of intentional walks and/or HBPs Also, the answers can only come from among those in the top 30 of At Bats as a Met -- which translates into 2,200+ ABs -- so you need to restrict your guesses to only those. Three points for correct name Minus one point for incorrect name Add two bonus points for correct placement No multiple guesses, no consecutive guesses, yadda yadda blah balh 1st place prize = Cadillac Eldorado 2nd place = Set of steak knives 3rd place = You get to go first in Double Jeopardy And, as always, those who are late do not get fruit cup
  5. It just occurred to me that ESPN's main crew did the game from London this afternoon/morning so we won't be hearing Vasgerian-Mendoza-Rodriguez tonight. Not sure who their backup crew is. Schiambi/Sutcliffe?
  6. It would require more than a small leap of faith to assume that either different usage and/or a shot of 'Atta Boy' CAHN-fidence over the last 2-1/2 seasons (2017-2019) would have mattered enough to significantly reduce Gsellman's ERA from where it's been sitting at nearly 5.00 (4.87) or his WHIP over the same span from 1.43 The one good thing he is doing is keeping the ball in the park as he might be the rare pitcher in all of MLB whose HR numbers AND HR rate is down in 2019. As far as our staff goes, the 4 HRs off of him is fewer, and in more innings pitched, than the 7, 5, 6 vs Diaz, Fam, and Lugo. Of the other three, only Lugo hasn't already surpassed his HR total of 2018 and even his HR rate is up (6 vs 9 in 40% of the IP) I don't have an objection to using Gsellman as a closer when the situation dictates. I just don't want to decree it and act as if we've solved the problem.

  8. A quickie look at what we're getting vs what could have been reasonably expected. The career stats are those coming into this season. So all were good, or, at worst, good-ish. All were holding steady and/or trending in the right direction through last year. All were, and still are, under 30. Familia, the oldest, turns 30 in October. All, save Familia, are currently healthy that we know of. CAREER20182019 DIAZ2.64 / 1.021.96 / 0.794.94 / 1.42 FAMILIA2.73 / 1.212.88 / 1.237.81 / 1.84 LUGO3.44 / 1.192.66 / 1.083.60 / 1.20 GSELLMAN4.38 / 1.404.28 / 1.304.82 / 1.39 * Diaz is allowing base runners at 40% above his career norms and nearly double the rate as compared to last year. And then there's the ERA ... * Familia, whose 2018 was near identical to his career norms, is currently up 50% in runners allowed while tripling his ERA * Lugo is closest to 'normal' although his bad outings have been magnified by coming during two horrid streaks (as outlined earlier) of which we are currently in the midst of the second [7 RA in 3 outings - 3-2/3 IP] The other was 9 Runs in 3 games over just 2-2/3 IP (Mar 30 - Apr 4) * Gsellman, while giving up an extra 1/2 R/G, is giving us pretty much as expected as he's yet to match the promise he showed as still a 'pre-rookie' in 2016 [2.42 / 1.28] and led BP to tab him as their #17 prospect in the winter of '16/'17
  9. Frayed Knot wrote: Cano got a meaningful hit!! Cano got a meaningful hit!! That hit (w/2 outs in the 6th) was also the last hit the Mets got in the game. Braves had 5 hits in the 7th thru 9th including 2 HRs and a double
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: Doesn't SOMETHING good have to happen sooner or later? I guess not. 1st & 2nd/none out, and not a ball out of the infield in three tries. Come to think of it, neither of the first two guys got a ball out of the infield either, but we got a bit lucky with the error and a non-3rd-strike call on JD Davis
  11. Doesn't SOMETHING good have to happen sooner or later?
  12. Our 8th inning not quite as successful as theirs: 1-2-3 against a 25 y/o rookie reliever who was an 18th round draft pick out of mighty Tabor College (Hillsboro, Kansas as if you didn't already know that)
  13. So the other thing about this barrage is that it'll bring up the meat of the Atlanta lineup once again in the 9th inning. But instead, Lugo gives up 4 hits (3 for XB) while getting just 5 outs and so Freddie and co will get one more crack at things.
  14. Edgy MD wrote: It's such a typical score for Major League Baseball in Britain. A quick rundown: 30 Runs combined on 37 hits (16 for XB) 12 BB; 16 K 40 LOB after going 15 for 28 w/RiSP 422 total pitches by 16 pitchers (8 each) 4:42 The booby prize for pitching goes to Boston's Mike Shawaryn who needed 53 pitches to register 4 outs and gave up 8 ER in the process. Each team scored 6 runs in the 1st inning and each team had another six run inning later on. The Red Sox were, at one point, down by 11 and yet managed to later get the tying run to the plate And our game, even with its twin delays of rain (1:10) and HP umpire switch (??), may wind up taking less time than the London mess (even though our contest isn't exactly zipping along either).
  15. Cano got a meaningful hit!! Cano got a meaningful hit!!
  16. Touki Toussaint out of the game in a double switch. This will allow him to go back to his regular job as opening act for the Neville Brothers.
  17. Mazza is delighting his gallery. (I'm playing to the Washingtonians in the crowd)
  18. Garrett born 30 years later would likely have been a much more appreciated player. Not just because of the later emphasis and appreciation of OBA but even legal training methods -- discouraged in his time -- would have added some meat to his skinny frame (5' 11" - 175 -- more or less my size) and I'm guessing would have made him into at least a mediocre power hitter (three highest seasons were 12, 13, and 16). A former poster here claimed he referred to him as 'Warning Track Wayne' back in the day for his propensity to not quite hit HRs. My goal, if I ever were to meet and chat with Wayne, would have been to ask him if his On-Base ability was ever a subject at contract time seeing as how those guys were on one-year deals much of the time. And, if not, if he thought it was because front offices didn't appreciate the value of that or whether they simply didn't want to pay for it. I suspect both.

  20. At Dom's current pace, if he had as many ABs as Alonso he'd be at 20+ HRs (20.168) to Pete's 28 Just sayin'
  21. So this game is being held at the Olympic stadium that they used for the 2016 games, which was then re-fit to be the home park for West Ham United. Now when they go, as the saying goes, to Chelsea for they replay review (as they just did), does that mean the replay umps are over in the soccer stadium across town?
  22. They're now in the 8th inning in London, Yanx lead 17-13 It may already be tomorrow over there. Either that or it's next Tuesday, I'm not sure.
  23. Cano keeps his streak alive of no meaningful hits, a streak which started on day 2 of the season.
  24. That 1st inning was just a perfect illustration of how this season's been going. Them: Off the end of the bat - finds a hole - With a runner on 1st, and then later w/1st & 3rd, they hit two would-be GiDP balls, but neither one was at a fielder We, on the other hand, hit line drives right at people with runners on and then fail to tag up. And then could-be big ABs end in bases-loaded K's (Dom) just as they did last night (McNeil) for our side. For their side last night's big bases-loaded AB (Camargo) ended in a bases-clearing double
